Virginia Gruver

BISMARCK, N.D. - Virginia M. Gruver, 94, of Bismarck, formerly of Burden, died June 19, 2000, in Bismarck.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Burden Baptist Church. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials have been established with the Burden Baptist Church and the San Blas Medical Mission of Panama.

Gruver was born May 23, 1906, in St. Louis, to Margaret (Reynolds) and William Scott Cowherd. She was raised in St. Louis.

She graduated from business college with a degree in secretarial management and also attended Moody Bible Institute.

On June 16, 1928, she married the Rev. Harold Gruver in Kansas City, Mo. He died Sept. 7, 1989.

For many years Gruver worked as a secretary in Alaska, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico as well as several communities in the continental United States. She was also the pianist and organist in most churches where her husband was the minister.

The couple moved to Burden after retiring. After his death, she moved to Bismarck in 1989 to be near her son.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Daniel Gruver, Bismarck; two daughters, Martha Benedict, Fayetteville, Ark., and Grace Jones, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Robert Everly

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Robert H. Everly, 75, of Bakersfield, died June 28, 2000, in Bakersfield.

Memorial services will be held later. Bakersfield Family Funeral Director is in charge of arrangements.

Everly was born April 14, 1925, in Royal Oak, Mich., to Neva (Truesdale) and Harold Everly. He was educated in Royal Oak schools and graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield in 1952.

During World War II he served as a navigator with the rank of second lieutenant in the Air Force. Following the service, he taught school in Waverly for a few years.

Everly married Phyllis Stuber at the First Christian Church in Winfield.

He began work with Boeing in Wichita and retired from Boeing in Seattle.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Everly, Oregon; two daughters, Nancy Everly, Kelso, Wash., and Lisa Justis, Seattle; and three grandchildren.

Howard Morton

Howard Russell Morton, 91, of Winfield, died June 30, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.

Morton willed his body to the University of Kansas Medical Centerl in Kansas City. A memorial service will be held later. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the Cumbernauld Village Hope Fund.

Morton was born June 15, 1909, in Blackwell, Okla., to Mary (Beekler) and Joseph C. Morton. He attended schools in Blackwell and Winfield.

On Nov. 26, 1933, he married Ethel May Arrington in Kechi.

During World War II he served in the Pacific aboard the Navy hospital ship USS Repose.

Morton worked for Safeway in Winfield, Kingman and Anthony before becoming an agent for Woodmen Accident and Life Insurance Co. He retired as district manager in 1973.

The Mortons moved to Winfield in 1981 and were the first residents in the Cumbernauld Village apartments in June 1989. His wife died Aug. 9, 1998.

Morton was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and was active in Methodist Men in Anthony and Winfield. He was in Kiwanis in both Anthony and Winfield and served as lieutenant governor. He was also a member of the Anthony Chamber of Commerce and the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors.

Survivors include a son, Herbert Morton, Winfield; a daughter, Winifred "Freddie" Lear, Longview, Texas; a brother, Cliff Morton, Enid, Okla., two sisters, Ida Farmer, Muskogee, Okla., and Alyce Loper, Houston; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Henry Stewart

WICHITA - Henry A. Stewart, 76, of Wichita, formerly of Latham and the Timber Creek community, died June 28, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home, 12100 E. 13th, from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, 1500 Hayes Drive, Suite B, Manhattan, KS 66502.

Stewart was born near Latham on Jan. 7, 1924, to Jennie (Griffith) and John E. Stewart. The family moved east of Atlanta, to the Timber Creek community, where Stewart attended school.

During World War II he served in the Army and was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and numerous other medals.

On March 24, 1948, he married Iona Askins in Topeka. They lived most of their married lives in Wichita. Stewart was employed by Utility Contractors as a heavy equipment operator for 31 years.

Survivors include his wife, Iona Stewart, Wichita; a son, Terry Stewart, Maize; one granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews in the Cowley County area.

Helen Conklin

ARGONIA - Helen C. Conklin, 69, of Argonia, died July 1, 2000, at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

The Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Danville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, also at the church. The Revs. Michael Peltzer and David Linnebur will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Cemetery in Conway Springs.

A memorial has been established with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Wichita. Elliott Funeral Home of Harper is in charge of arrangements.

Conklin was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Wichita, to Ernestine (Schwenker) and John Neises.

On Jan. 26, 1952, she married Eldon Conklin in Oxford.

A homemaker, she was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Danville, of the St. Joan of Arc Parish Community.

Survivors include her husband, Eldon Conklin, Argonia; three daughters, Karen Chenoweth, Haviland, Phyllis Cole, Derby, and Sharon Carl, Conway Springs; four sons, David Conklin, Albuquerque, N.M., Paul Conklin, Argonia, Mark Conklin, Wellington, and Gregg Conklin, Winfield; her mother, Ernestine Neises, Belle Plaine; six sisters, Louise Hoffman, Hope, Betty Smith, Scranton, Clara Zimmerman, Wellington, Vivian Ward, Auburn, Patricia Black, Derby, and Beverly Scobee, Belle Plaine; three brothers, John Neises, Geuda Springs, Jim Neises, Oxford, and Eddie Neises, Wellington; 19 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Virginia Gruver

Services for Virginia M. Gruver were held at 2 p.m. June 30, 2000, at the First Baptist Church in Burden. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Wanda Mackey was the organist. Mike Bailey was the vocalist. Musical selections were "The Love of God" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Casket bearers were Gruver's family and grandsons.

Memorials have been established with the San Blas Medical Mission in Panama and the Burden First Baptist Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Josef Weidmann

ARKANSAS CITY - Josef Weidmann, 66, of Arkansas City, died July 1, 2000, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care and Rehabilitation Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parker Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Weidmann was born Feb. 4, 1934, in Germany. He came to the United States as a teenager during World War II. He was a carpenter in the San Diego, Calif., area where he met and married Hazel Ferne Rickords Ytteroy.

They moved to Arkansas City from California in 1974. Mrs. Weidmann died on July 24, 1991. Mr. Weidmann worked for Jelink Salvage in Arkansas City until becoming ill earlier this year.

Survivors include two brothers-in-law, Claude Rickords and Lindel Rickords, and a sister-in-law, Doris Hall, all of Arkansas City.

John Crill

John Crill, 89, of 1501 St. James Court, Winfield, died July 3, 2000, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City.

A memorial has been established with the World War II Veterans Memorial. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Crill was born April 25, 1911, in Garfield County, Okla., to Mable (Bardwill) and Horace Mack Crill. The family moved to Lyons when he was two and he graduated from Lyons High School in 1934. Following graduation he began working for the Gulf Oil Corp.

In 1943 he joined the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, he continued his employment with Gulf Oil Corp. and retired in 1974 following 44 1/2 years of service.

On June 28, 1947, he married Neva Baxter in Howard. After his retirement, they moved to Havana Lake in Caney and then to Winfield in July 1994.

Crill was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion Post 129 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3184, all of Lyons, and the Elks Lodge in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Survivors include his wife, Neva Crill, Winfield; a stepson, Gene Balding, Russellville, Ala.; a brother, Earl Battershell, Lyons; a sister, Marie Bean, Magalia, Calif.; and two stepgrandsons.
