Alvin Walls
SEVERY - Crockett Alvin Walls, 84, of Severy, died Aug. 7, 2000, at his home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Cemetery
at Eureka. The Rev. Don Harper will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Climax United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Walls was born April 28, 1916, in Glen White, W.Va., to Jessie Gaye (Hutchison) and Davy Crockett Walls. He graduated from high school in Surveyor, W.Va., in 1935.
In 1937 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II until his discharge in 1945. After the war, he attended a trade school in Chicago before returning to West Virginia.
On Sept. 12, 1946, he married Aletha May Longfellow in Hinton, W.Va. They lived in California and Arkansas for many years before moving to a farm near Climax. He was employed by Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita for four years and became a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Kansas.
While he and his wife lived in Missouri for 16 years, he worked at marinas at Table Rock Lake. They later lived in Texas for 16 years before moving to Severy.
His wife died Dec. 2, 1999.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Charles Longfellow, Climax, and a niece, Luanna Pinkston, Clearwater.
Luella Millen
Luella M. Millen, 84, of Winfield, died Aug. 8, 2000, in Winfield.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane. Burial will be in Mulvane Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association.
Millen was born June 26, 1916, in Clearwater, to Sarah (Murray) and Hubert Alcorn.
On Jan. 4, 1937, she married Dale Eldon Millen in Belle Plaine. He died in January 1966.
An electrical wirer, she had been employed by Boeing and Cessna Aircraft before her retirement.
Millen had been a volunteer at Botanica and a member of a home demonstration unit.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Iverson, Mulvane, Beverly Jenkins, Winfield, and Charlene Mannon, Burden; a son, Gary Millen, Denver; two sisters, Hazel Jenkins, Independence, Mo., and Dorothy McPhaul, Pensacola, Fla; a brother, Kenneth Alcorn, address not given; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Paul Rich
OXFORD - Paul Eugene Rich, 71, of Oxford, died Aug. 6, 2000, at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston after a long battle with cancer.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.
A memorial has been established with Angel Flight. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Rich was born March 23, 1929, in Tulsa, Okla., to Bessie Vennis (Allen) and Dewey Ervin Rich. In 1940 the family moved to Oxford where Rich graduated from high school in 1949.
On Jan. 15, 1950, he married Ada Belle Emberton in Oxford.
While Rich worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, the family lived in several places in Oklahoma and Kansas before returning to Oxford.
In 1956 the family moved to California where Rich worked and farmed for six years before returning to Kansas. He later worked for General Electric, the Coleman Co. and Boeing Aircraft before retiring in 1991.
Rich was a member of Maple Street Baptist Church where he had been music director for several years as well as lay minister.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Belle Rich, Oxford; three daughters, Linda Keady, Winfield, and Freda Hotchkin and Gena Havner, both of Oxford; a granddaughter, Stephanie Tipton, whom the Riches adopted; two brothers, Glen Rich, Wichita, and Earl Rich, Cuba, Mo.; a sister, Dorothy Bohrer, Arkansas City; three stepsisters, Janet Staats and Donna Schulte, both of Wichita, and Inez Garcia, Orange Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Joyce Rich and Janet Wikel, preceded him in death.
Helen Rising
BURDEN - Helen Rising, 85, longtime resident of Burden, died Aug. 7, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church in Winfield and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.
Rising was born Oct. 30, 1914, on a farm in the New Salem community, to Luvada Edna (McBeth) and Benjamin Elijah Sickles. She was raised and educated in the New Salem area.
On June 20, 1936, she married Bryce L. Rising in Newton, and they made their first home on a farm southeast of Burden. In 1943 they moved to their farm west of Burden where they lived and worked for over 50 years.
Rising operated a restaurant in Burden during the 1950s and was later employed at William Newton Memorial Hospital and Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
She had resided at Good Samaritan Village since 1996.
Her husband died July 21, 1998.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan Bair, Winfield, and Dianne Stanley, Rowlett, Texas; four sons, Richard "Gene" Rising, Winfield, Norman Rising and Lowell Rising, both of Wichita, and Derryl Rising, Burden; her sisters, Thelma Sickles, Kansas City, Mo., and Louise Wilson, Winfield; a brother, Warren Sickles, Burden; 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Nellie Clark
HOWARD - Nellie Frances Clark, 90, of Howard, died Aug. 9, 2000, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Harper will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Clark was born Nov. 15, 1909, in Howard, to Maude M. (Phillips) and Marsh E. Encell. She attended Howard High School and grew up in the Howard area.
On Feb. 19, 1927, she married Franklin Edmund Clark in Howard. They made their home on a farm northeast of Howard. She was a homemaker.
Her husband died April 1, 1993.
A quilter, Clark was a member of a quilting club in the Fiat community. She was a former member of the Grange and a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Howard.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Clark, Conway Springs, Richard Clark, Howard, and Raymond Clark, Wautoma, Wis.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.
Alice Mogle
MIDLAND, Texas - Alice Helen Mogle, 94, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 9, 2000, in Midland, Texas.
Services were at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at Resthaven Memorial Park. Dr. Tommy Porter officiated. Ellis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mogle was born Feb. 17, 1906, in Collinsville, Ill., to Nora and John D. Cravens. In the 1930s she moved to Winfield where she married Clarence H. Mogle in 1936. For many years they lived in Winfield where her husband was an optometrist and owned a jewelry store.
Her husband preceded her in death. She moved to Texas to be near her granddaughter's family.
Mogle was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Donna Campbell, Midland, Texas; a grandson, Dr. Richard Mogle, Bryan, Texas; six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
John Ramirez
ARKANSAS CITY - John P. Ramirez Jr., 59, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 8, 2000, at his residence.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Ramirez was born Oct. 20, 1940, in Arkansas City, to Manuela "Nellie" (Trillo) and John P. Ramirez. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City. In the early 1960s he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Morocco for a year.
For over 20 years Ramirez worked in maintenance for the City of Arkansas City. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Cecilia Young and Theresa Mata, and two brothers, Gilbert Ramirez and Vincent Ramirez, all of Arkansas City.
