Helen Rising
Services for Helen Rising were held at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 11, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ron Keith officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.
Laura Belle Haines was the organist, and Martin Rude sang "In the Garden," "God Will Take Care of You" and "The Lord's Prayer."
Honorary casket bearers were Peggy Brant, Pauline Dunbar, Opal Hall, Ogureta Horrocks, Erma Keely, Elsie Kilts, Blanche Leftwich and Phyllis Nichols.
Casket bearers were Rising's grandchildren: Blaine Bair, Michelle Bair, Lisa Craven, Brady Dutton, Brian Dutton, John Moberly, Amy Peebler, Jason Peebler, Jessica Rising, Rebecca Rising, Brandon Shutter, Renee Shutter and Rachelle Stanley.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Foundation.
Charles McMillan
WELLINGTON - Charles J. McMillan, 76, of Wellington, died Aug. 14, 2000, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Wellington High School Crusader Band.
McMillan was born Sept. 19, 1923, in Wichita, to Lillian Mae (Jones) and Charles Ross McMillan. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1941.
On June 9, 1946, he married Betty Norris in Wellington.
McMillan was employed by Jarvis Auto Parts in Wellington, Winfield and Augusta for 34 years and worked at Plessey Welco for 10 years. He retired in 1989.
He was a lifetime member of Demolay and the Wellington Elks Lodge and played drums in the Famous Melody Masters.
Survivors include his wife, Betty McMillan, Wellington; three daughters, Kathryn Ann Tolles, Arkansas City, and Debra Jo Frazee and Lisa Christine Thompson, both of Wellington; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Craig Newman
ARKANSAS CITY - Craig Newman, 54, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 10, 2000, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. Newman's ashes will be entombed in Riverview Mausoleum during a private service.
Memorials have been established with the Cowley County Community College Endowment Fund and the First Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Newman was born March 28, 1946, in Arkansas City, to Jean D. (Howes) and Earl G. Newman. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1964. He continued his education at Cowley County Community College.
After college he moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where he became a vice president in a bank. In 1993 he returned to Arkansas City and worked for Newman's Department Store until it closed.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his stepmother, Jo Ann Newman, Arkansas City, and an aunt, Caroline Warren, Englewood, Colo.
Eva Samms
Services for Eva Lynn Samms were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 15, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Oxford Cemetery.
Vocal music included recordings of "One Sweet Day," by Mariah Carey and Boyz-II-Men, "Angel," by Sarah McLauchlan, "One Day at a Time," by Cristy Lane, and "If I Had Only Known," by Reba McIntire.
Honorary casket bearers were Joe Cummings, Ray Faber, Ken Grant, Terry Smith and Bob Terres.
Casket bearers were Steve Bugay, Ed LeValley, Gary Samms, Ronald Samms, Walt Wolffrum and Wilbur Wolffrum.
Memorials have been established with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and the paramedic program at Cowley County Community College.
Fred Axtell
MOLINE - Fred Lawrence Axtell, 100, longtime resident of Moline, died Aug. 15, 2000, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Moline Cemetery. The Rev. John Foust will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home.
Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.
Axtell was born Aug. 9, 1900, in Perry, in Jefferson County, to Irene (True) and Myron Axtell. He attended grade school in Argonia and graduated from Argonia High School. He also graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Pittsburg State University.
On May 16, 1936, he married Hazel Etta Knabe in Dodge City. They moved to Moline where he became the publisher of The Moline Advance. He was a newspaper publisher for many years and remained a commercial printer until his retirement. He had been a resident of Elk Manor since Aug. 15, 1989. Mrs. Axtell died April 8, 1999.
He was a member of the Moline Christian Church.
Survivors include a sister, Grace Taylor, Sun City, Calif.; and a niece, Betty Sallee, Moline.
Lulu Miller
MOLINE - Lulu LaVera Miller, 92, formerly of Grenola, died Aug. 15, 2000, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Grenola Christian Church. Pastor Wallace Wartick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery
in Grenola.
Memorials have been established with the Grenola Christian Church and Elk Manor Nursing Home. Contributions may be made at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Miller was born Feb. 28, 1908, on the family homestead southwest of Grenola, to Bettie Ann (Self) and Henderson "Pete" Sweet. She attended Elk County schools and graduated from Howard High School in 1925. She took normal training and taught school at Fairview rural school in Elk County.
On July 29, 1927, she married Albert Homer Miller in Grenola. They lived in several locations in Oklahoma where Mr. Miller was employed in oil field work, then purchased a farm south of Grenola in 1936. Mr. Miller died March 2, 1986. Mrs. Miller moved to Elk Manor Nursing Home in December 1997.
Miller was a news correspondent for the Winfield Daily Courier and other area newspapers for over 20 years. She was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge of Grenola, the Busy Bee Quilting Club and the Elk County Extension Home Unit. She was also a former Sunday school teacher and remained an active member of the Grenola Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Charles Miller, Grenola, seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A son, Albert Miller Jr., preceded her in death.
Eva Williams
Services for Eva L. Williams were held Aug. 15 in the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Music included "On Eagles' Wings" and "In the Garden."
Casket bearers were Jim Day, Lowell Bowling, Mark Patrick, Terry Triplett, Art Ankrom and Fred Koonce.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.
Martha Baker
Martha Saxe Baker, 95, of Winfield, died Aug. 16, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. A private burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

Baker was born Nov. 25, 1904, in Springfield, Mo., to Helena and John Saxe. The family resided in Monett, Mo., and Fort Scott before moving to Winfield in 1918. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1923 and attended Southwestern College, Pittsburg State University and Cowley County Community College. She graduated from Winfield College of Music in 1930 and taught piano in her home. She also taught music and art in Winfield rural schools until her retirement in 1983.
On Dec. 6, 1926, she married Emory Baker. He died in 1989.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Mariners, the Janet Hobson Circle, Gardenaires, music clubs and guilds.
Survivors include a son, John Baker, Winfield; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Edwin Bass
AFTON, Okla. - Edwin Louis Bass Sr., 80, of Afton, Okla., formerly of Arkansas City, died Aug. 15, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. Danny Daniel will officiate.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and the Woodland Shores Lake Association Swimming Dock Fund. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Bass was born Oct. 17, 1919, in Hattiesburg, Miss., to Neva Mae (Thompson) and Homer Thurman Bass Sr. He was raised and educated in Jackson, Miss., and graduated from Central High School in Jackson in 1938.
During World War II he served in the United States Army at Strother Field.
On April 10, 1943, he married Eleanor Pearson at the First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City. After the war they moved to Mississippi where Bass worked as a sales manager at Lewis Grocery Stores. They later returned to Arkansas City, then moved to Wichita where he worked for Bleier's IGA for 16 years. He retired in 1981. Mrs. Bass died in 1961.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City and a lifetime member of Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Arkansas City.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin L. "Corky" Bass Jr., Arkansas City, and Justin W. Bass, Wichita; a daughter, Carol S. Taylor, Winfield; two brothers, Homer T. Bass Jr., Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and James Bass, Birmingham, Ala.; longtime friend, Junior Coggins, Oxford; two grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, one great-granddaughter and two stepgreat-grandsons.
