Willis Andes

Willis F. Andes, 68, longtime Cowley County farmer and rancher, of Winfield, died Jan. 4 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita.

His service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Military graveside interment ceremonies will be in the Rose Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Andes was born August 28, 1932, in Winfield, to Chester and Myrtle (Miller) Andes. He received his early education in the Prairie Ridge rural school and attended Winfield High School.

On November 24, 1957, he married Janiece Ruggles in Tisdale, and the couple lived and worked on their farms throughout their marriage.

Andes was preceded in death by his wife on February 6, 1991; by a daughter, Kamala Kay Andes; and by a brother, Gary Andes on June 24, 1980.

Survivors include his three sons, Kenneth, Kody and Klay Andes, all of Winfield; his two brothers, Donnie and Tommy Andes, both of Winfield; his sister, Vickie Metzinger, Dexter; his step-mother Joan Andes, Winfield; and four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Beatrice Cobb

WICHITA - Beatrice Switzer Cobb, 91, of Wichita, died Jan. 4, 2001.

Her service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Rose Hill Cemetery at South Haven. Hillside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cobb was a dietary department employee at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center before her retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Nedia Wilkinson, Wichita; two brothers, Carl Patrick, Bodfish, Calif., and James Patrick, Miles City, Mont.; a sister, Gladys Haun, Casper, Wyo.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Jon Glass

WICHITA - Jonathan M. "Jon" Glass, 43, of Wichita, a cabinet maker, died Jan. 4, 2001.

His service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel and 1 p.m. in Dexter Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Contributions can be sent to Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, 6555 E. Central, Wichita, KS 67206.

Glass was born July 23, 1957, in Wichita.

Survivors include his father, Merle Glass, Tulsa, and his mother, Rita Davis, two brothers, Jody and Mick Glass, and a sister, Jill Beard, all of Wichita. George and Marilyn Love of Dexter are his uncle and aunt.

Gelston Groom

Gelston Swain "Bus" Groom, 88, of Winfield, died Jan. 6, 2001, at the Kansas Veterans Home at Winfield.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home.

Groom was born June 1, 1912, in Wilmot, to Mabel (Swain) and Arthur Groom. He attended rural schools and Wichita Commercial Business College.

Before World War II he served in the U.S. Army and was recalled to duty to serve in the 9th mechanized armor division until 1945.

On Dec. 3, 1942, he married Marjorie F. Logan in Wellington.

Groom worked for 16 years as a mechanic for Stuber Brothers Ford before starting Groom's Auto Service which he and his wife owned and operated until retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Groom, Winfield; a daughter, Gelestene Kay Miller, Ponca City; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

William Heinz

UDALL - William E. Heinz, 63, of Udall, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services were at 11 a.m. Jan. 8 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winfield.

Heinz was born Sept. 6, 1937, in Great Bend, to Mildred E. (Doll) and Leonard N. Heinz.

He was an automobile mechanic, working independently and with several area automobile dealers. He lived in Rose Hill and Derby before moving to Udall.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred Heinz, Wichita; two sons, William Heinz, Dallas, and Daniel Heinz, Wichita; a daughter, Lisa J. Harmon, Augusta; a sister, Karolyn-Kay Heinz-Sargent, Wichita; a brother, Marvin Heinz, Augusta; his fiancee, Rochelle McCroskey, Udall; and one grandchild.

Douglas Hunter

ARKANSAS CITY - Douglas Larry Hunter, 52, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 6, 2001, at his home.

A private service will be held Wednesday. A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Brown Center at Cowley County Community College.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

An art scholarship fund has been established at Cowley County Community College, and a memorial has been established with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hunter was born March 28, 1948, in Junction City, to Virginia (Blanchard) and Donald Hunter. He attended Council Grove schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and then in the Kansas Army National Guard.

Hunter received a bachelor's degree from Southwestern College and a master's degree in art education from Wichita State University.

On July 22, 1986, he married Patricia Tieperman in Arkansas City. He lived in the Dexter area for several years before moving to Arkansas City in the late 1980s.

Hunter was art instructor, head track coach, head women's basketball coach and assistant football coach at Cedar Vale High School from 1973 to 1976. During this time he was also art instructor, head volleyball coach and track coach at Dexter High School.

For three years he operated Hunter Ceramics in Winfield.

In 1979 he began working as an art professor at Cowley County Community College. From 1979 to 1985 he also handled athletic recruiting at Cowley. He was an assistant baseball coach in 1985 and head coach of the women's softball team from 1979 to 1985.

He served as assistant track coach at Southwestern College from 1988 to 1996.

In 1998 Hunter was named to "Who's Who in America." He received a master teacher award from the University of Texas in 1995 and was named Outstanding Teacher in Education in 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1989. He received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Kansas Art Education Association in 1997. In 1984 he was named Coach of the Year by the Kansas Association of Community Colleges for his work as a softball coach.

He was a member of the Kansas National Education Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hunter, and a daughter, Ashlee Hunter, both of Arkansas City; two stepdaughters, Lindsay Sunderland, New Bern, N.C., and Tricia Morgan, Arkansas City; his parents, Donald and Virginia Hunter, Alamo, Texas; a brother, Gary Hunter, Fort Collins, Colo.; and two stepgrandchildren.

Serena James

LAKE STEVENS, Wash. - Serena May James, 85, of Lake Stevens, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 30, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Burial was in the G.A.R. Cemetery at Lake Stevens.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the Lake Stevens Assembly of God Church.

James was born May 25, 1915, in Tishomingo, Okla., and had been a resident of Snohomish County since 1969.

She was a member of the Lake Stevens Assembly of God and the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Theron "Joe" James, 1316 91st Ave. SE, Everett, WA 98205; two sons, Jimmy Leon James, Lake Stevens, and Howell Martin James, Ashland, Ore.; a sister, Joe Clark, Tishomingo, Okla.; two brothers, Donald Martin, Ada, Okla., and Jack Martin, Louisville, Ky.; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Andes, Kody Andes and Klay Andes, all of Winfield, and Lin Andes, San Diego; two brothers, Donnie Andes and Tommy Andes, both of Winfield; a sister, Vickie Metzinger, Dexter; his stepmother, Joan Andes, Winfield; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Lorraine Lewis

Services for Lorraine June Lewis were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 6, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. James Butler officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.

Music included "How Great Thou Art" as well as congregational singing of "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages."

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
