Daniel Laswell
Daniel P. Laswell, 68, of Winfield, died Feb. 22, 2001, at the Veterans Administration hospital in Wichita.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Mount Vernon Cemetery
west of Winfield.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
Laswell was born Oct. 27, 1932, in Kansas City, Mo., to Leah J. (Patton) and Hubert M. Laswell. As a child he was adopted, and his family later moved to Winfield. He graduated from high school and later attended Wichita State University.
Laswell's career was with the United States Navy. After retiring in the mid-1970s, he was transferred to the Naval Fleet Reserve. He then worked in the Groton Submarine Soundweb before returning to Winfield.
Survivors include his friend, Mary Cook, Winfield; two sons, one daughter and one grandchild.
Melvin Miller
BEND, Ore. - Melvin "Olie" Miller, 86, of Bend, formerly of Dexter, died Feb. 17, 2001, in Bend.
Memorial services were held Feb. 19 at Niswonger, Reynolds & Tabor Funeral Home in Bend.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Charles Dialysis Center in Bend or a charity of the donor's choice.
Miller was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Oxford, to Anna and John Miller. When he was two years old, the family moved to Dexter. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1935.
On Feb. 14, 1939, he married Geraldine Muriset.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army, Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, in the South Pacific.
After he was in the military he worked as a meat cutter in the retail grocery business.
Miller and his wife moved to Prineville, Ore., in 1989 and to Bend in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Miller, Bend; two daughters, Cathy Grimes, La Pine, Ore., and Jeralyn Pearl, San Jose, Calif.; three sisters, Irene Coats, Shawnee, Okla., Pauline Nicholson, Tulsa, Okla., and Helen Meyers, Bethany, Okla.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Cynthia Pepin
WICHITA - Cynthia Scarth Pepin, 46, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Feb. 21, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center. Since the age of 8, she had suffered from diabetes.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Pepin was born Dec. 7, 1954, in Winfield, to J. Louise (Reed) and Frank G. Scarth. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1972. She then worked at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center for a short time.
On Oct. 4, 1990, she married David Pepin in California, and they made their home in Wichita.
She was a member of the Women's International Bowling Congress.
Survivors include her husband, David Pepin, Wichita; a son, Joshua Pepin, Arizona; two daughters, Melanie Young, Winfield, and Heather Gilbert, Wichita; her parents, Frank and Louise Scarth, a brother, Michael Scarth, and a sister, Gina Bowlin, all of Winfield; and five grandchildren.
Dorothy Greever
Dorothy Greever, 87, of 1315 Ann, Winfield, died Feb. 23, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services were at 2 p.m. today in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
Greever was born Feb. 8, 1914, in Stafford, to Lois (Christie) and James M. Odle. She graduated from Yates Center High School and received her undergraduate degree from Southwestern College and a master's degree from Wichita State University.
In 1936 she married Francis M. Greever. He died in 1977.
Greever taught in Cowley County rural schools and at Stevenson and Irving elementary schools in Winfield before retiring in 1979.
Greever was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years.
Survivors include two sons, Jack Greever, Winfield, and Mack Greever, Claremore, Okla.; two sisters, Mary Coulson and Betty Alexander, and a brother, Jim Odle, all of Wichita; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Jacque Swope
Karen Jacqueline "Jacque" Swope, 52, of Winfield, died Feb. 24, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Swope was born July 30, 1948, in Winfield, to Virginia Ruth (Cummings) and Jack Knuckey. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from high school at Reserve in 1966.
On Nov. 21, 1992, she married Steven Swope in Winfield where they made their home. She worked as a certified nursing assistant and a home health aide.
Survivors include her husband, Steven Swope, and a son Timothy Wayne Brooks, both of Winfield; two stepdaughters, Catrina Zielinski, Port Hueneme, Calif., and Nicole Swope, El Dorado; her mother, Virginia Knuckey, and a sister, Ruth Ann Marquis, both of Winfield; and one grandchild.
A son, Kevin Lynn Brooks, preceded her in death.

Kasey Kasenberg
OXFORD - Oscar Allen "Kasey" Kasenberg, 83, of Oxford, died Feb. 25, 2001, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Enterprise Cemetery
at Benton. Pastor Wayne Handle will officiate.
Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the Oxford United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Kasenberg was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Benton, to Lena (Miller) and Joseph H. Kasenberg. He graduated from Benton High School in 1937.
He began working for Cessna in 1938 and later worked for Stearman and Boeing.
On Jan. 11, 1942, he married June Pearce in Winfield.
From June 1942 to January 1946 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
After Kasenberg was discharged, he and his wife moved to Oxford, and he returned to Boeing. He later became a telephone repairman and a custodian at Oxford High School.
In 1957 the family moved to Littleton, Colo., where he worked for a few years at Martin Marietta until becoming an engineer at Stapleton Airport in Denver. He retired in 1980, and the couple returned to Oxford.
Kasenberg was a member of the the United Methodist Church, the Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge, all of Oxford.
Survivors include his wife, June Kasenberg, Oxford; one daughter, Deitra White, Denver; and one granddaughter.
Bethel Racker
GRENOLA - Bethel Racker, 76, of Grenola, died Feb. 24, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Attica. The Revs. W.E. Racker, Harry Betts and Ron Keith will officiate. Burial will be in Attica Cemetery. Elliott Mortuary of Anthony is in charge of arrangements.

Racker was born Dec. 17, 1924, in Attica, to Ruby Ellen (Johnston) and Clarence Earl Warren.
On Oct. 13, 1944, she married Walter E. Racker in Attica.
A retired registered nurse and teacher, she was a member of the United Methodist Church of Attica, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Walter E. Racker, Grenola; two sons, Walter E. Racker IV, Tecumseh, and Warren E. Racker, Lawrence; four brothers, Dr. Harding Warren, St. Louis, Leonard Warren, Daykin, Neb., John Warren, Woodville, Wash., and Mark Warren, Redmond, Wash.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
William Black
Services for William J. Black were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 23, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated.
Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Martin Rude sang "Whispering Hope" and "The Lord's Prayer."
Honorary casket bearers were past masters of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons: William Lawrence, Bob Simmons, Garold Butler, Alan Lewis, Kenneth McCanon, William Rosecrans, Carl Jordan, Norman Payne, Larry Bates, Virgil Bates, Charles O. Miller, Billie McKinley, Neil Balzer, Richard Hopkins, Hugh Graham, Roger Wilcoxen, Donald Key, David Christman, Frank Fry, Michael Rush, Elmer Griffith and Bob Saar.
Casket bearers were Wayne Rush, Allan Rush, Ron Mozingo, Jim Bowman, David B. Ranger, Byron Jones and Dale Fruits.
