Marie Swaim

GEUDA SPRINGS - Marie E. Swaim, 85, of Geuda Springs, died May 28, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Oxford First Baptist Church. The Revs. David Lemke and J.L. Robbins will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home in Oxford until 8 tonight. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8.

A memorial has been established with the Slate Valley Baptist Church Building Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home at 906 W. Kansas, Arkansas City, KS 67005.

Swaim was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Lawrence, to Mary Ethyl (Cory) and Lauren A. Hunter. She attended Lawrence public schools before attending the University of Kansas for one year. She then went to Emporia State Teachers College and attained her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1938.

She taught school in Oxford from 1938-1941 before moving to Kansas City, Kan., and teaching school there from 1951 until 1975.

On Aug. 4, 1940, she married Francis A. "Tad" Swaim in Lawrence.

She was a member of P.E.O., Daughters of the American Revolution, Kansas Public Employee Retirement System, Soldanella Club and Progressive Club. She was also a member of the Chelsea Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan., and the Slate Valley Baptist Church near Oxford. She taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for both churches.

Survivors include her husband, Francis "Tad" Swaim, Geuda Springs; two sons, Steven Swaim, Auburn, Ala., and John Swaim, Westerville, Ohio; a sister, Ruth H. Neill, Lebanon, Ill.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Paul Bazil

Services for Paul Ellis Bazil were held at 10:30 a.m. May 29, 2001, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Diane Glasgow was the organist. Music included a recording of "Tears from Heaven," by Eric Clapton, and "How Great Thou Art," sung by the congregation.

Honorary casket bearers were Paul's grandparents, Jim Cheslic, Brett Bazil and Ron Billups, and his godfather, Mike Sparks.

Casket bearers were J.J. and Curtis Billups, Herk Talley and Doug Cummings.

A memorial has been established with the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation.

Alta Morgan

Alta M. Morgan, 82, of 1704 Frankfort, Winfield, died May 27, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Morgan was born May 2, 1919, in Delaware County, Okla., to Rose (Graham) and Alfred Lackey. She attended school in Deerlick, Okla.

On April 21, 1935, she married Archie F. Morgan in Jay, Okla. They moved to Winfield in 1944.

Morgan worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for about 33 years. She was a nursing assistant and later worked in funds management.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Billy J. Morgan, Marvin L. Morgan and J.R. Morgan, all of Winfield; two daughters, Treva J. Harrod, Winfield, and Shirley A. Artherton, Wichita; two sisters, Imogene Wilson, Augusta, and Alene Kinsey, Fairland, Okla.; 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Clela Peters

GEUDA SPRINGS - Clela Jane Peters, 73, of rural Geuda Springs, died May 30, 2001, at her residence after a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Christian Church in Arkansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The Revs. Steve R. Chambers and Harry Cunningham will officiate.

Memorials have been established with Central Christian Church and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Peters was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Blackwell, Okla., to Hannah (Auldridge) and Emiel Klofkorn. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1946. She worked for Duvall Drug Store during high school and later for the Arkansas City hospital.

On Sept. 24, 1948, she married Merle Peters in Arkansas City.

Peters researched family history and left behind a written record. She was a longtime member of Central Christian Church and the WTL Home Extension Unit and was a leader in the Theaker 4-H Club.

A son, Fred Carl Peters, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Merle Peters, Geuda Springs; a daughter, Sandra Walker, Maple City; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Gene Leas

WELLINGTON - Gene Leas, 73, of Wellington, died May 31, 2001, at Sumner Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Quentin Bennett and Pastors Marvin Ewertt and Zane Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Day Funeral Home from 1 to 9 p.m. today and Sunday. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Sunday.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church, 202 W. Harvey, Wellington, KS 67152. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Leas was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Winfield, to Evaline (Spittler) and Floyd W. Leas.

On Jan. 22, 1956, he married Virginia Schifferdecker in Wichita.

Leas was a retired tool engineer with Plessey-Midwest, now BAE Systems.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Tom Schwinn Post 90 and Tri-City Model Airs Club.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Leas, Wellington; a son, Rick Leas, Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Sue Peninger, Wellington; five grandchildren, one stepgrandchild, three great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Marie Swaim

OXFORD - Services for Marie Eileen Swaim were held at 2 p.m. May 31, 2001, at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. David Lemke and J.L. Robbins officiated. Burial was in Oxford Cemetery.

Musicians were Mary McCormick, organist; Melva Rochat, pianist; and Judy Wilson, vocalist. Music included "In the Garden," "Love Lifted Me" and "The Lord's Prayer."

Honorary casket bearers were Nathan Copeland, Bill Swaim, Bob Lee Swaim, Dick Dunn and C.D. Swaim.

Casket bearers were Thomas Swaim, Matthew Swaim, Mark Swaim, Christina Swaim, Royce Swaim, Dick Cory and Scott Neill.

A memorial has been established with the Slate Valley Baptist Church Building Fund.

Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Goans

ARKANSAS CITY - Barbara "Kay" Goans, 55, of Arkansas City, died June 1, 2001, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center after a two-year battle with cancer.

Services will be 2 p.m Monday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Chambers and Pastor Jess Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Victory in the Valley. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Goans was born Dec. 10, 1945, at the Norman Naval Air Station, Norman, Okla., to Mabel (Trogdon) and Amos Kimberling. Raised and educated in Norman, she graduated from Norman High School and later from the University of Oklahoma. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Goans taught art for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Meridian, Miss., and at Chilocco, Okla.

On May 20, 1995, she married Dennis Goans in Arkansas City where they made their home.

She was a longtime employee at the Binney & Smith Crayola plant in Winfield. Since the plant closed in 1998, she had been working on her master's degree at Wichita State University.

A homemaker, she was a member of Central Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis Goans, Arkansas City; two sons, John Austin, Kansas City, and Charles Austin, Arkansas City; and a brother, Andy Kimberling, Norman, Okla.

Alta Morgan

Services for Alta M. Morgan were 2 p.m. May 31 at Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated.

Jim Reeves sang "Peace in the Valley."

A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Reeves

ARKANSAS CITY - Lawrence H. Reeves, 78, of Arkansas City, died June 1, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with the Youth League and the Salvation Army and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Reeves was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Arkansas City, to Nellie May (Mummey) and Oscar Hamilton Reeves.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Juanita Shiner.
