Herbert Morgan

MOLINE - Herbert Newton Morgan, 85, died Nov. 5, 2001, at Elk Manor Nursing Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Elk Falls Cemetery with Pastor Ted Smith officiating.

Memorials have been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home and Moline Christian Church. Contributions can be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Morgan was born Jan. 6, 1916, at Fall River, to Achilles S. and Wahneta Louella (Johnston) Morgan. He attended school in Fall River and Coyville and graduated from Fall River High School.

In 1940 he married Florence Irene Lee at Fall River. The marriage ended several years later.

On March 24, 1960, he married Evelyn Mae (Shaw) Howland at Fredonia. She preceded him in death.

Morgan farmed and helped with wheat harvesting throughout the Midwest. He had lived in Oregon and California but spent most of his life in Kansas. In recent years he lived at Elk Manor.

He was a member of the Moline Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Swaim, Greensboro, N.C., and Darla Jean Owen, Reno, Nev.; a son, Darrell Morgan, Odessa, Texas; two sisters, Irene Glover, Coffeyville, and June Casto, Westlake, Ore.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Donna Arlene Morgan, preceded him in death.

Viola Graham

Services for Viola T. Graham were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 6, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Larry Scarth officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Song leader was Phil Wolke. Music included " Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "When We All Get to Heaven."

Honorary casket bearers were granddaughters Stacy Herring, Lori Hushes, Joy Kennedy, Robyn Knowles and Kim Whitlock.

Casket bearers were grandsons Mike, Rod and Stan Kennedy, Lonnie Knowles and Ky and Sean Longley.

Memorials have been established with Maude Carpenter's Children's Home and the In Search of the Lord's Way program through the Church of Christ.

Doris Jordan

NEWTON - Doris Irene Jordan, 83, of Newton, formerly of Hutchinson, died Nov. 6, 2001.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Resthaven Mortuary Chapel, Wichita, with burial in Resthaven Gardens of Memory.

A memorial has been established with the First Congregational Church Women's Fellowship, 2410 N. Plum, Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Jordan was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Wichita, to Orel D. and Gladys (Brady) Holman.

Before her retirement, Jordan was an interior decorator and consultant for J.C. Penney Co.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Jordan, Newton; four sons, Ernest Allyn Jordan Jr., College Station, Texas, and James "Mike," Stephen Mark and David Lee Jordan, all of Wichita; three daughters, Karen Lynn Bucher, Friendswood, Texas, Pamela Kay Parrack, Pueblo, Colo., and Kathleen Ann Corrie, Oak Hill, Va.; two half brothers, Donald Holman, Halstead, and Galen Means, Stafford; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Frank Miller

Services for Walter Francis "Frank" Miller were held at 10 a.m. Nov. 7, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Tisdale Cemetery.

Organist was Irma Scholfield. " The Old Rugged Cross" and "The Lord's Prayer" were sung by Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer.

Casket bearers were Andrew S., Daniel, Patrick F. and Patrick H. Allan, John Born and Darrell Horst.

Memorials have been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church and the Lifeline Program at William Newton Hospital.

Lela Moore

BURDEN - Services for Lela Mildred Moore were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 7, 2001, in Grand Prairie Cemetery, Burden. The Rev. Dois Nix officiated.

"He Touched Me" and "Victory in Jesus" were performed by Steve Butler.

Casket bearers were grandsons Josh Kinder, Mike and Roger Lundy, Dustin, Eric, Ian, Larry and Terry Moore and Phil Stines.

A memorial has been established with Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Leon Burris

ARKANSAS CITY - Leon Roy Burris, 89, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 8, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held later in Great Bend. Cremation has been effected. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Burris was born May 29, 1912, in Great Bend, to Emory B. and Katie E. (Brocher) Burris. He graduated from Great Bend High School.

Burris married Anna Eulala Ockerby on July 1, 1937, in Claflin. She died Feb. 13, 2000.

Burris worked for Walnut Creek Milling Co. in Great Bend until World War II and served with the U.S. Navy during the war. He then worked for Home Appliance Store until 1958 when he moved to Wichita and worked for the Coleman Co. until his retirement in 1977. The couple moved to Arkansas City soon after retirement.

Burris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend and the American Legion.

Survivors include a brother, Glenn Burris, Arkansas City; a sister, Doris Amrein, Great Bend; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A stepson, Alvin Daniels, preceded him in death.

Mary Beckwith

Mary Lee Beckwith, 78, longtime resident of Winfield, died Nov. 9, 2001, at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service with burial in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 this evening.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Born Jan. 22, 1923, in Winfield, she was a daughter of Earl Leroy and Edith (Marston) Pettit. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1941.

On Oct. 5, 1941, she married Robert L. Beckwith. They lived in Tulsa for a short time but resided most of their lives in Winfield. They purchased Pettit Cleaners in 1950.

Beckwith was a bookkeeper for Beckwith Cleaners until 1959, for Kerr's and then for Clock's Medical Supply from 1973 until retiring in 1990.

Her husband died Oct. 1, 1993.

Beckwith was a member of the First Christian Church and a former member of Beta Sigma Phi, Winfield Soroptimist and Mothers Study Club.

Survivors include three sons, Tracy Beckwith and Russell Beckwith, both of Winfield, and Barry Beckwith, Rogers, Ark.; a daughter, Karen Culver, Rogers, Ark.; a stepson, Jerry Sherry, and a stepdaughter, Barbara Buttram, both of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a half sister, Carma Manring, Las Vegas; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Bill Fiske

William Henry "Bill" Fiske Jr., 88, of 815 Loomis, Winfield, died Nov. 10, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. Miles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the church.

Fiske was born May 10, 1913, in Dodge City, to William Henry and Estella (Gardner) Fiske. He attended Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1933.

Fiske worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. from 1933 until retiring in 1977.

On Oct. 10, 1936, he married Vera Boone in Wichita. They moved to Winfield in 1942.

Fiske was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years and had been an elder, deacon and trustee. He was a Boy Scout leader for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife, Vera Fiske, Winfield; a son, Richard "Rick" Fiske, Olathe; a brother, Guy Fiske, Winfield; and one granddaughter.

A son, Rod Fiske, preceded him in death.

Talma Fitzgerald

Talma O. Fitzgerald, 83, of Winfield, died Nov. 9, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Atlanta Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 this evening.

A memorial has been established with the Atlanta United Methodist Church.

Born Oct. 25, 1918, in Atlanta, she was a daughter of Thomas Glick and Laura Alma (Schooling) Moss. She attended Atlanta schools.

On May 22, 1935, she married Marion Ralph "Red" Fitzgerald in El Dorado. Her husband was employed by Texaco Oil, and they lived in various Kansas towns where she was a homemaker.

Her husband died Dec. 20, 1966.

Fitzgerald was a member of the Atlanta United Methodist Church for more than 70 years and a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Scott A. Fitzgerald, Winfield, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
