Clara Hanna
Clara Hanna, 94, of Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died Dec. 28, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.
A private service will be held with Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be later in WaKeeney Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box. 335, Winfield, KS 67156.
Hanna was born March 26, 1907, at Blakemore, to Clark and Myrtle (Conrey) Henderson. She attended schools in the Blakemore area and Fort Hays State University.
On Oct. 13, 1928, she married Clarence Hanna in Denver. He died Feb. 17, 1986.
Hanna was a homemaker and had taught school before her marriage. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the First Presbyterian Church of WaKeeney.
Survivors include her son, Gary Hanna, Winfield; a sister, Orena Bangs, McCleary, Wash.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Betty Williams
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Betty Lee Williams, 83, formerly of Moline, died Dec. 23, 2001, at her home in Albuquerque.
Services were held Dec. 29 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Cemetery
near Moline with Father Edward J. Steinberger officiating.
A memorial has been established with St. Mary's Church of Moline. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Williams was born Jan. 3, 1918, at Moline, to Thomas Lee and Nora A. (Chandler) Walker.
She married Ormand Williams, and they farmed near Moline. He preceded her in death.
Williams had resided in Albuquerque since 1951 and was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Shamrock Extension Club and Holy Ghost Senior Center.
She was a former member of St. Mary's Church in Moline and a past president of St. Mary's Altar Society.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Dec, Livermore, Calif.; her son, Larry Williams, Albuquerque; and five grandchildren.
Clinton Mickey
WICHITA - Clinton M. Mickey, 67, of Wichita, died Dec. 29, 2001.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at College Hill United Methodist Church. Cochran Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Wichita Association for the Visually Handicapped.
Mickey was born July 31, 1934, in Wichita, to Thomas Edward and Hazel E. Mickey. He graduated from Wichita North High School and served with the U.S. Army in North Korea.
Mickey was on the St. Joseph Medical Center administrative staff before his retirement.
Survivors include two sisters, Esther Hull, Winfield, and Helen Winona Rogers, Fayetteville, Ark.
Jacob Swank
WICHITA - Jacob Swank, 81, of Wichita, retired farrier, died Dec. 27, 2001.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hillside Assembly of God. Watson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the Joash Fund, c/o Hillside Assembly of God, 2000 S. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67211.
Swank recently retired as a third generation horse shoer. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Working Farriers Association and had earned honors from that group.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Swank; two stepsons, Craig Belden, Lakewood, Calif., and Gary Belden, Mesa, Ariz.; and a sister, Virginia Porter, Bartlesville.
Chad Gibbs
WICHITA - Chadwick Ronald "Chad" Gibbs, 19, of Wichita, formerly of Udall, died Dec. 30, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mulvane. Burial will be in Red Bud Catholic Cemetery
northeast of Udall.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7.
A memorial has been established to help the family with funeral expenses. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Gibbs was born June 19, 1982, at Wichita, to Joan Marie Gibbs. He attended Udall schools and received his general equivalency diploma from Campus High School in Haysville.
Gibbs had been employed as a manager of restaurants in Wichita.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his fiancee, Christina Nelson, a daughter, Emilee Rose Gibbs, his parents, Ed and Joan (Gibbs) Vaughan, and Steve Gossvener, his brothers, Michael Lee and Christopher Paul Gibbs, and a sister, Christina Michelle Vaughan, all of Wichita; his grandparents, Ron and Sylvia Von Bon and Donna K. Gossvener; and his stepgrandmother, Shirley Vaughan.
Bernadine Hamlin
BLACKWELL - Bernadine Y. Hamlin, 89, of Blackwell, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 22, 2001, in Wichita.
Services were held Dec. 24 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with interment in Blackwell Cemetery. Roberts & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society and Blackwell Home Health Care. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Hamlin was born Aug. 14, 1912, in Cedar Vale, to Orval and Myrtle (Holverson) Younkman. The family moved to Winfield where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1930.
She then worked as a salesclerk and later manager of J.B. Lynn Dress Shop.
On Oct. 2, 1937, she married Raymond H. Hamlin in Winfield. They moved from Winfield to Tonkawa, Okla., in 1948 and later to Blackwell. Her husband died Feb. 10, 1984.
Hamlin was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and active in the altar society. She was a member of the Blackwell Regional Hospital Auxiliary and served on the Opportunity Center Board in Ponca City and the Associated Charities Board in Blackwell. She was also a member of the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society and had served on its board.
Survivors include a daughter, Maurita Hamlin Sells, Blackwell; a son, Thomas Robert Hamlin, Derby; and four grandchildren.
A son, John "Jack" Hamlin, preceded her in death.
Carrol Rochat
Services for Carrol Joan Rochat were held at 1 p.m. Dec. 29, 2001, in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Music was "Amazing Grace."
A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Carol Stone
ARKANSAS CITY - Eva Carol Stone, 58, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 30, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery
at Winfield. Pastor Jerry Hedrick will officiate.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials have been established with Harvest Fellowship Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Stone was born March 6, 1943, in Osceola, Ark., to Charles Albert and Lucille (Rice) Lambert. She attended schools in Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama and Kansas.
On Nov. 10, 1960, she married James Gilmer Shrewsberry in Gent, W.Va. They owned and operated a grocery store in Gent. Her husband died Jan. 10, 1970.
In 1972 she moved to Winfield.
She moved to Arkansas City and married Jerry Stone Oct. 4, 1980.
Stone owned and operated a day care service, worked as an insurance agent and later worked for the LEAP program for the Social and Rehabilitation Service office in Winfield.
She was a member of Harvest Fellowship Church.
Survivors include three sons, Mark, Matt and Greg Shrewsberry, all of Arkansas City; five brothers, James Lambert, Arkansas City, Allan Lambert, Tulsa, Okla., Danny Lambert, Emporia, Gerry Lambert, El Paso, Texas, and David Lambert, Sapulpa, Okla.; six sisters, Jean Hinton, Goldsborg, N.C., Betty Bowlby, Tullahoma, Tenn., Shirley Wood and Glenda Campbell, both of Arkansas City, Virginia Moore, Blackwell, and Karen Brown, Wichita; and five grandchildren.
Paul Nellis
DEXTER - Paul Eugene Nellis, 79, died Dec. 31, 2001, at his home east of Dexter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dexter Christian Church with burial in Dexter Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dexter Christian Church.
A memorial has been established with the church.
Nellis was born April 9, 1922, near Dexter to William Theodore "Ted" and Sylvia Alice (Glass) Nellis. He attended Dexter area schools and graduated from Dexter High School in 1940. He attended welding school in Winfield and moved to Wichita in 1941 to work for Beech Aircraft.
On April 19, 1942, he married Freda Mildred Bennett in Winfield.
From 1943 to 1945 Nellis served in the U.S. Army's 104th Infantry Division in Holland, northern France and Germany. He was a technical sergeant when he was discharged from the 413th Infantry Regiment.
Nellis returned to work at Beech before moving his family to Dexter in 1949. He farmed, was a self-employed carpenter and also worked for Callison Construction and later Sherrard Builders, both in Winfield.
Nellis was a member of the Dexter Christian Church where he had served as chairman of the board for many years. He was currently an elder. Nellis was also a member of Bicentennial Post 225 of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son, Norman Nellis, Topeka; two daughters, Janet Shorter, Winfield, and Virginia Hensley, Arkansas City; two brothers, Melvin Nellis, Arkansas City, and Ed Nellis, Lawrence; a sister, Doris Davidson, Topeka; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
