Cecil Gomez
WICHITA - Cecil F. Gomez, 84, retired certified executive chef, of Wichita, died Jan. 20, 2002.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillside Funeral Home West Chapel, 2929 W. 13th.
Memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202, and the American Diabetes Association.
Gomez was born June 6, 1917, in Hanston, to Margaret (Harvey) and Florencia Gomez.
On July 19, 1939, he married Ilene E. Farmer.
He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and during World War II served in the U.S. Army.
Gomez worked as a chef for 51 years in restaurants, private clubs and country clubs throughout the Midwest. He retired in 1987 from Hillcrest Country Club in Kansas City, Mo.
He was a member of the American Culinary Association, Central Community Church of Wichita, American Legion Post 3 of Lincoln, Neb., the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Association of Retired Persons.
A son, Gilbert Leon Gomez, died at birth.
Survivors include his wife, Ilene Gomez, Wichita; two daughters, Margaret Ann Neal, Winfield, and Donna Sue Davis, Bois DíArc, Mo.; two sons, Robert Cecil Gomez, La Center, Wash., and Roger Lee Gomez, Seward, Neb.; a sister, Charity Duckworth, Colleyville, Texas; four brothers, Mike Gomez, Emporia, Pete Gomez, Dodge City, Bobby Cavitt, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Martin Rowland, Dodge City; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Verna Jestes
Services for Verna Lucille (Miller) Jestes were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 21, 2002, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ruth Tipps officiated. Burial was in North Cedar Creek Cemetery, Cedar Vale.
Marilyn Custer was the pianist. Jim Artherton performed ìHow Great Thou Art.î
Honorary casket bearers were Roileen Baumgardner, Jack, Keith and Lloyd Foster, Carolyn Good, Winfred Long, Patsy Ruth McGee, David, Henry A. and Kenneth M. Miller and Lorene Yordi.
Casket bearers were G.L. and Warren Custer, Jim Harvey, Robert Virgil Jestes, Howard L. Miller and Leon Williams.
A memorial has been established with the Grainola United Methodist Church.
Curtis Van Pelt
WELLINGTON - Curtis K. ìVanî Van Pelt, 83, of Wellington, retired owner of Gambles, died Jan. 20, 2002, at Sumner Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Kendale D. Finley will officiate. Burial will be in Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home until 9 tonight. The family will greet visitors from 7 to 9.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Van Pelt was born July 23, 1918, in Beloit, to Ina T. (Horn) and Roy L. Van Pelt.
On Jan. 23, 1944, Van Pelt married Doris N. Lyne in Salina. She died Dec. 25, 1985.
On Feb. 19, 1988, he married Alice Carroll in Donna, Texas.
Van Pelt managed Gambles stores in Abilene and Junction City before moving to Wellington in 1953. In Wellington he owned the Gambles store from 1953 until 1979 when he retired.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Wellington Masonic Lodge and Wichita Consistory.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Van Pelt, Wellington, two daughters, Jane Reeves, Winfield, and Lyn Ketterman, Olathe; a son, Tom Van Pelt, Piedmont, S.D.; two stepsons, Dale Carroll and David Carroll, both of Wellington; a brother, Garth Van Pelt, Wichita; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one stepgrandchild.
Eugenie Mayorkas
R. Eugenie Mayorkas, 88, of Winfield, former owner and operator of The Book Nook, died Dec. 26, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church. Watson Funeral Home of Wichita is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the church.
Mayorkas was born Nov. 15, 1913, in New York, N.Y.
Survivors include two sisters, Raquel Stone, New York, N.Y., and Sallie Lepoff, Solana Beach, Calif.
William Paton
William Maurice Paton, 77, of 12614 234th Road, Winfield, lifetime resident of Cowley County, died Jan. 20, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor of Arkansas City.
Cremation has taken place. At Patonís request, no service will be held, but a register can be signed at Miles Funeral Service through Friday.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Paton was born May 10, 1924, on a farm in the South Bend community of Cowley County, to Lena Viola (Waltz) and William Henry Paton. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1941. After high school, he continued to help on his fatherís farm and ranch.
On Dec. 10, 1950, he married Charlyne Rowe. They made their home on the farm southwest of Winfield in the house where he was born. Paton was a longtime farmer and rancher.
Survivors include his wife, Charlyne Paton, and a sister, Willa Jean Mueller, both of Winfield.
Wayne Selleck
HOWARD - Army Pfc. Wayne Alan Selleck II, 19, of Washburn, Mo., died Jan. 18, 2002, from injuries received in an automobile accident at Tulsa.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Grace Lawn Cemetery
in Howard. Pastor Clyde Brummett will officiate. An honor detail from Fort Riley will perform military rites. Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God in Rogers, Ark.
Selleck was born May 4, 1982, in Wichita, to Nellie Maria (Murphy) and Wayne Alan Selleck.
After graduating from high school in Washburn, Mo., Selleck enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, at the time of his death.
Survivors include his parents, Wayne and Nellie Selleck, and his sisters, Angela Long, Tiffany Hendrix and Kimberlie Patterson, all of Washburn, Mo.; and his grandparents, Mary Leigh, El Dorado, Ann Bell, Stella, Mo., and Walter Selleck, Washburn, Mo.
Bill Seyler
Bill Dean Seyler, 68, of 614 E. 14th, Winfield, died Jan. 22, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors from 6:30 to 8.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas.
Seyler was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Franklin County, to Ruth (Turkle) and John Seyler. He was raised and educated in Belle Plaine.
On Feb. 14, 1959, he married Pat OíKane in Belle Plaine. They lived in Belle Plaine until 1963 when Seyler went to work at General Electric at Strother Field. He completed 34 years with GE as an inspector.
Seyler was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Seyler, Winfield; two daughters, Teresa Abraham, Rose Hill, and Kathy Abraham, Derby; and seven grandchildren.
Cynthia Oller
CEDAR VALE - Cynthia Alice Oller, 90, of Cedar Vale, died Jan. 22, 2002, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Meinschein Funeral Home is in charge of services in Litchfield, Ill. Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale is in charge of local arrangements.
Oller was born April 19, 1911, in Carlinville, Ill., to Inez and Frank Oller.
On Nov. 23, 1932, she married Floyd A. Oller. They lived in Litchfield, Ill., for many years. He died April 19, 1970.
She moved to Gladwater, Texas, then to Chanute and in 1994 to Cedar Vale.
Oller was a member of the First Baptist Church of Litchfield. She had also been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Litchfield.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Stripland, Cedar Vale, and Sharon K. Oller, Longview, Texas; a son, Floyd Oller, Chanute; a sister, Wanda Bounds, Hillsboro, Ill.; two brothers, Roy Oller, Atwater, Ill., and Arley Oller, Illinois; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Clara Hess
CALDWELL -- Clara L. Hess, 99, homemaker, of Caldwell, died Jan. 22, 2002.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Corbin United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jan McDaniel will officiate. Burial will be in Corzine Cemetery
at Corbin. Elliott-Schaeffer Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Hess was born Dec. 27, 1902, in Gravity, Iowa, to Olive (Alt) and George Sargent.
On Dec. 25, 1926, she married Claude H. Hess in Sumner County.
Survivors include four daughters, Eleanor Youmans, Palm Springs, Calif., Doris Jackson, Caldwell, Phyllis Atkinson, Minneapolis, Kan., and Geraldine Rouenhorst, Perris, Calif.; a sister, Fern Duncan, Winfield; 20 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
