John McCollum

FALL RIVER – John Andrew McCollum, 79, died Aug. 5, 2002, at his home near Fall River.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Severy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Julie Shields and McCollum's nephew, Paul Hughes III, will officiate. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Severy.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.

McCollum was born Nov. 14, 1922, nearl Fall River, to Laura Edna (Smith) and Grover Cleveland McCollum. He lived on the same farm all his life. When he was 14, he became a farmer after his father's death.

On Feb. 18, 1951, he and Ruth Arlene Knapp were married in Howard.

McCollum and his brother, Earl, farmed together for many years. In 1956, they received a soil conservation award from the Kansas Bankers Association. He was a lifetime member of the Severy Co-op and a 40-year member of the Mid-America Dairy Association of Erie. In 1988, he received the Kansas Centennial Farm Award from Gov. Mike Hayden.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene McCollum, Fall River; four sons, Donnie, Frank and Randy McCollum, all of Fall River, and Ronnie McCollum, Waynoka, Okla.; two daughters, Karen VanWinkle, Corning, and Jill McCollum, Howard; and eight grandchildren.

Todd Proulx

OXFORD – Services for Todd Allen Proulx were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 6, 2002, in the Oxford High School gymnasium. The Rev. Danny Ginn officiated. Burial was in Oxford Cemetery.

Kim White gave the eulogy, Chris Tong read a poem and Jed Bentz was the guitarist.

Honorary casket bearers were Mattl, Andrew and Aaron Gill and Daniel and Christopher Potucek.

Casket bearers were Ross Bartelson, Danny Morris, Layne Parsons, Joshua Hiten, Aaron Ternes and Jeremy White.

Oxford Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Dicken

CHAPMAN – Thomas D. Dicken, 93, of Chapman, died Aug. 2, 2002, at Chapman Valley Manor.

Dicken was cremated. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 at Danner Funeral Home in Abilene. The Rev. Robert Frasier will officiate.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Chapman Valley Manor. They may be sent in care of Danner Funeral Home, P.O. Box 758, Abilene, KS 67410.

Dicken was born Nov. 3, 1908, in Winfield, to Julia (Wilson) and John Dicken. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1928 and from Kansas State University in 1933.

In January 1934 he and Ada Faye Hart married.

A longtime employee of the United States Department of Agriculture, Dicken worked with the soil conservation service in Pratt, Hutchinson and Hays and from 1963 to 1965, in Algeria. He retired in Hays in 1975 and moved to Abilene in 1982.

Dicken was a member of the First Baptist Church in Winfield.

Survivors include his wife, Ada Dicken, Chapman; two daughters, Sheila Collins, Cleveland, Ohio, and Linda Mayden, Abilene; a son, David Dicken, Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Elton Bowman

SEDAN – Elton E. Bowman, 74, of Sedan, died Aug. 8, 2002, at his home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Stan Cover and Dois Nix will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon to 5 today and from noon to 9 Sunday at Barnes Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church or the fair building. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Bowman was born Sept. 5, 1927, at home in Geuda Springs to Revah (Graham) and Ralph Bowman. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1945. He immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until the end of World War II.

In 1945 he married Elois Baker Burns. They started a dairy and farming operation in 1948 near Arkansas City. In 1953 they moved to Sedan where they continued the dairy until 1969 when they convered the farm to grain only. The couple later divorced.

In 1983 Bowman married Una Mae Harmon, and they continued farming with his son, Edwin, in Chautauqua County.

During his years of farming, Bowman served on county boards including the ASCS, soil conservation, Farm Bureau, farm management, county fair board and school board and other civic organizations in Sedan.

Bowman joined Mount Hope Methodist Church at the age of seven and was baptized in a farm pond near the church. He later changed membership to the First Baptist Church in Sedan where he and his wife were active.

Survivors include his wife, Una Mae Bowman, Sedan; two sons, Clay Bowman, Lawrence, and Edwin Bowman, Sedan; a daughter, Teresa Thompson, Kansas City, Kan.; two stepsons, Jim Raymon, Mulvane, and Jeff Raymon, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Cindy Raymon, Carlsbad, Calif.; four grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

Velda Liermann

Velda M. Liermann, 82, lifelong resident of Winfield, died Aug. 7, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the National Parkinson's Foundation and Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Liermann was born March 24, 1920, in Winfield, to Altha (Aldridge) and Guy Wright. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1938.

On Jan. 14, 1940, she married George W. Liermann in Winfield, and they made their first home on a farm east of town. Later they moved to the home place next door and lived there the rest of their years together.

A farm wife and homemaker, she worked at Binney & Smith from 1956 until retiring in 1974.

Liermann was a member of Tisdale United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher for many years.

Survivors include a son, George Guy Liermann, Winfield; a sister, Lucille Jones, Casper, Wyo.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Robert Saar

Robert C. Saar, 74, of Winfield, died Aug. 7, 2002, at his home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. Masonic burial rites will be conducted at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Monday.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Saar was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Arkansas City, to Fannie May (Hunt) and Lloyd Saar. He was raised and educated in Arkansas City and Shawnee, Okla.

On Oct. 5, 1946, he entered the U.S. Army at Fort Riley. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in March 1948.

On Sept. 9, 1950, he and Della Vandawalker married in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield throughout their marriage. Saar went to work at Boeing the same year he married and remained there until he retired in 1990.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men. A master mason since March 30, 1967, Saar held many posts at Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, including past lodge master, past commander, past high priest of Winfield chapter 31, past sovereign of Calvary Conclave Red Cross of Constantine and past illustrious master of St. John's Council 23.

He also belonged to the Order of High Priesthood, Order of Silver Trowel, Past Commander Association, Knight York Cross of Honor, past district deputy of Masonic lodge, treasurer and board of trustee member at the Winfield lodge.

Saar donated his time to Friendship Meals for many years.

He drove for Winfield Charter Bus Co. on weekends and holidays and drove a city bus route for many years as well.

Survivors include his wife, Della Saar, and a son, Damon C. Saar, both of Winfield; his mother, Fannie May Saar, Rogers, Ark.; two sisters, Imogene Mae Olinger, Rogers, Ark., and Jacqueline Faye Osburn, Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Olive Palmer

OXFORD – Olive L. Palmer, 99, of Oxford, died Aug. 9, 2002, at Riverview Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington.

Friends may call at Oxford Funeral Service from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Palmer was born Aug. 30, 2002, on a farm near Oxford, to Clara Belle (Quinn) and David Orlando Miller. She was raised on the family farm southwest of Oxford.

Her husband, Glen Palmer, was a Methodist minister, so they lived in various Kansas communities, including Ensign, Harper, Valley Center, Stafford, Ulysses and Colby. Following her husband's death Jan 1, 1964, Palmer moved to Oxford.

She was a member of the Oxford United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Warren Palmer, Sedona, Ariz.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

OXFORD – Olive L. Palmer, 99, of Oxford, died Aug. 9, 2002, at Riverview Manor.
