Marie Seaman

WICHITA – Marie Kennedy Seaman, 94, homemaker, of Wichita, died Dec. 21, 2002.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Vale First Baptist Church. Burial will be Ozro Cemetery.

Friends may call at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary until 8 tonight.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Jo Travis, Wichita; a sister, Zelda Wilkinson, Cedar Vale; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ted Smith

MOLINE – Oscar Theodore “Ted” Smith Jr., 66, of Moline, died Dec. 21, 2002, at the Sedan City Hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Moline Christian Church. Pastor Larry Evans will officiate. Burial will be 2 p.m. at Hamilton Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Moline Christian Church and The Gideons International. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Smith was born on Aug. 29, 1936 in Emporia, to Coie Devore (McCloud) and Oscar Theodore Smith. He attended school in Hamilton and graduated from high school in Newhall, Calif.

After high school, he returned to Kansas where he was employed in sales at Wichita before moving to Emporia.

In September 1955 he married Mary Jo Cowan in Emporia. The marriage ended in 1966.

On May 26, 1967, Smith married Carol Marie (Lyder) Carlisle in Emporia.

Smith owned and operated the Launderette and a rug cleaning business in Emporia until 1973. He managed a trucking company in Allen before moving to Hamilton in 1974. In Hamilton he worked in the oil fields. He retired from the oil fields in 1998 and became the pastor of the Moline Christian Church.

He was a former member of The Gideons International, a past master of Hamilton Masonic Lodge and was a past worthy patron of the Gaza Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star at Hamilton.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Smith, Moline; his sons, Monty Smith and Randy Smith, both of Topeka; his daughters, Dianne Boles, Eureka, and Tedi Simpson, Topeka; two brothers, William Smith, Benton, and Alan “Jim” Smith, Wichita, three sisters, Oma Weston and Leta Sherrill, both of Hamilton, and Margie Gregory, Gardnerville, Nev., and eight grandchildren.

Robert Vinette

HOWARD – Robert Louis “Benny” Vinette, 52, longtime resident of Howard, died Dec. 20, 2002, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Howard United Methodist Church. The Revs. Julie Shields and Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Flint Hills Assembly of God and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Vinette was born March 14, 1950, in Winfield to Helen Elizabeth (Thornton) and Darrel Hedges.

He graduated from high school and grew to manhood in the Howard community. He also completed his college degree and several graduate level courses. An accomplished electrician and woodworker, he had performed abstract and title work for Elk County Abstract and Title Co. during recent years.

Vinette was an active member of the Flint Hills Assembly of God.

He is survived by his companion, Sue Bauder, and his mother, Helen Vinette, both of Howard; a brother, Rex Vinette, Wakarusa; and three sisters, Mary K. Elliott, Topeka, Jeanne Bjorklund, Oakhurst, Calif., and Janet Vinette-Lupardo, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Phillip Taylor

ARKANSAS CITY – Phillip Gene Taylor, 72, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 22, 2002, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Central Christian Church. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Central Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Taylor was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Eureka, to Abbie (Moss) and Guy William Taylor. He was raised in Reece and graduated from Reece High School. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army.

On July 22, 1950, he married Nellie Katherine Kubick in Winfield. They made their home in Wichita and Salina before moving to Arkansas City in 1968. She died on Sept. 24, 1997.

Taylor worked as a pharmaceutical salesman for the Amerisource Pharmaceutical Co. He worked in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas for the last 50 years.

He was a longtime member of Central Christian Church, Crescent Masonic Lodge 133 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, the Midian Shrine of Wichita and the Cowley County Shrine Club.

Survivors include a son, Michael Taylor, Arkansas City; a daughter, Linda Wertz, Sugarland, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Taylor, Thayer; a sister, Gynell Berry, Wichita; and five grandchildren.

Wayne Duncan

WICHITA – Wayne W. Duncan, 87, of Wichita, formerly of Atlanta, died Dec. 21, 2002, at Haysville Healthcare Center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Duncan was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Atlanta, a son of Bertha (Reese) and George Edward Duncan. He was raised and educated in Atlanta and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1934. After high school he held various odd jobs.

In 1940 he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Hawaii. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Wichita.

On Nov. 24, 1945, he married Lorene Hazel Wadsack. They made their home in Wichita.

For over 30 years Duncan was a butcher at Cudahy's Packing Plant. He retired in 1977.

His wife died on Feb. 7, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, Michael W. Duncan, Maysville, W.Va., and Darrell W. Duncan, Derby; a daughter, Sharon L. Jordan, Marshall Islands two brothers, Ray Duncan, Chickasaw, Okla., and Dale Duncan, Fair Play, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Frank Everett

Frank Oliver Everett, 81, of the Kansas Veterans Home, 1220 World War II Memorial Drive, Winfield, died Dec. 22, 2002, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Funeral Home chapel, 12100 E. 13th, Wichita. The Rev. Bill Bullard will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Mausoleum.

A memorial has been established with the Kansas Veterans Home.

Everett was born March 14, 1921, in Lincoln, Neb., to Emma (Young) and John Oliver Everett.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Everett was a concrete worker for Utility Contractors and Eby Construction.

Survivors include his wife, Alma L. (Cyr) Everett, Winfield; a daughter, Darlyn Wickstrum, Clay Center; two stepsons, Darwin L. Michaud, Salina, and Gerald L. Michaud, Wichita; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Ray Ankrom

BURDEN – Ray Eugene Ankrom, 74, of Burden, died Dec. 22, 2002, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will greet visitors between 6 and 8.

A memorial has been established with the Athletic Scholarship Fund through the Commercial Federal Bank. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or the bank.

Ankrom was born April 8, 1928, in rural Cambridge, to Opal (Hendrickson) and Owen Ankrom. He was raised and educated in Cambridge except for his sophomore year when he attended Winfield High School. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1946. Following graduation he worked for the City Service in Burden.

From 1949 to 1950 he served 18 months in the U.S. Navy on the USS Henrico.

On March 24, 1951, he married Mary Jordan in Wichita. They made their home in Winfield.

Ankrom worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and later at Smith & Moon at Strother Field. In 1955 he and his wife moved to Burden. There he began farming and also worked as a machinist at Boeing in Wichita.

From 1970 to 1987 Ankrom and his wife owned and operated Ankrom's Market in Burden. After they sold the business in 1987, he returned to Boeing and worked there until he retired in 1992.

Ankrom was a member of the Burden Masonic Lodge and he had served as vice president of the Burden Fair Association. He coached his son's baseball teams from Pee-Wee through Babe Ruth and also coached fifth- and sixth-grade girls' basketball.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ankrom, Burden; a son, Hal Ankrom, Winfield; three daughters, Sheila Otto, Burden, Renee Womacks, Peck, and Cindy Mays, Winfield; a brother, Arthur Ankrom, Winfield; and eight grandchildren.

Mary Jackson

Mary L. Jackson, 58, of 510 W. 11th, Winfield, died Dec. 20, 2002, at her home.

Inurnment will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may sign a book from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Jackson was born Jan. 23, 1944, in Winfield, to Consuelo (Hernandez) and Reynaldo Cabera. She graduated from Winfield High School.

A lifetime resident of Winfield, she worked at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center.

Survivors include four sons, Johnny Jackson, Daniel Jackson and Tom Jackson, all of Winfield, and George Jackson, Topeka; a brother, Tony Cabera, Wichita; two sisters, Florence Biby, Derby, and Lupe Alexander, Wichita; and four grandchildren.

Edward Bever

Edward E. Bever, 77, of 1825 Booth, Winfield, died Dec. 24, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Floral Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 7 tonight. The family will greet visitors between 5:30 and 6:30.

Bever was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Floral. He attended rural schools and Winfield High School.

On March 6, 1954, he married Betty Joann McCrea in Winfield.

Bever owned and operated the High School service station in Winfield for many years.

A World War II and Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy and Air Force, Bever was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bever, Winfield; two sons, Jerry Bever, Anchorage, Alaska, and Kim Bever, Tyler, Texas; two sisters, Lotte Jennings, California, and Virginia McNiff, St. Louis, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
