Peggy LaJune Blair
JULY 9, 1933 - AUG. 1, 2003

Peggy LaJune Blair, 70, Mound City, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in her home.

She was born July 9, 1933, in Peel, Ark., the daughter of Elvon and Cleo Risley Pride. She and Lawrence Blair were married May 24, 1952, in Wagoner, Okla.

Mrs. Blair worked as a legal secretary and at Mound City High School.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mound City.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Blair, of the home; a son, Larry Michael Blair, of Pratt, Kan.; a daughter, Linda Blair Gifford, of Topeka; and five grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday in the church, followed by burial in Woodland Cemetery in Mound City. Arrangements were under the direction of Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Group in Mound City.

Alice Genevieve Johnson
MAY 27, 1917 - AUG. 1, 2003

Alice Genevieve Johnson, 86, longtime Paola resident, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in Miami County Medical Center in Paola.

She was born May 27, 1917, in Kewanee, Ill., the daughter of Jacob and Nellie Mae Horton Harper. She moved at an early age to Kansas, where she lived most of her life.

She married Claude Johnson on Oct. 5, 1940, in Garnett.

Mrs. Johnson raised chickens in her early married days and enjoyed saving her egg money.

She was a member of the Victory Baptist Church in Osawatomie at one time.

Preceding her in death were a son, Claude W. Johnson; a daughter, Karen Sue Johnson; a granddaughter, Arlene Cole; two brothers, Frank Harper and Lawrence Harper; and five sisters, Nellie Luse, Edna Hydorn, Bessie Tyler and two who died in infancy.

Survivors include her husband, Claude Johnson of the home; three sons, Francis Eugene Harper of Wichita, Edwin A. Johnson of St. Louis, Mo., and Melvin L. Johnson of Paola; two daughters, Wanda C. Wilson of Olathe and Sharon K. Woody of Linwood, Kan.; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 31 great-great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday in Wilson and Son Funeral Home in Paola. Burial was in Paola Cemetery.

Kathryn M. Lauber
JUNE 29, 1917 - JULY 26, 2003

Kathryn M. Lauber, 86, Dodge City, Kan., a former Osawatomie resident, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, in the Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

She was born June 29, 1917, in Vernon, Kan., in Woodson County and her parents were Lee and Jeanette Tannahill Eichorn. She and Edwin Lauber were married June 1, 1938, in Holton, Kan. They had lived in Dodge City since 1942.

Throughout her life, she was involved in public education, supporting her husband, who taught for a time in the Osawatomie school district. During their years in Osawatomie, she worked in Fannie Carson's beauty shop.

After her husband's death in 1968, she served as housemother for the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity at the University of Kansas. She also served in a similar capacity at Saint Mary of the Plains College and later worked as a teacher's assistant in the Dodge City Head Start Program.

Her memberships included the United Methodist Church and Chapter CF of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, both of Dodge City. She was a lifelong Jayhawk basketball fan.

In addition to her husband, those preceding her in death included a brother, Raymond Eichorn.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Jones of Aurora, Ill.; a son, Robert Lauber of Roscoe, Ill.; a brother, Robert Eichorn of Lafayette, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were July 30 in the Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center, Kan. Burial was in the Yates Center Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Dodge City Public Schools Foundation in care of the superintendent's office.

Barbara Sue Bounds
MAY 14, 1953 - SEPT. 26, 2003

Barbara Sue Bounds, 50, Drexel, Mo., died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003. She had been admitted to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., after cancer was diagnosed in both lungs.

She was born May 14, 1953, in Roby, Mo., the daughter of Russell and Mabel Lee. She graduated in 1972 from Drexel High School.

She married Mark Bounds in June 1990.

Mrs. Bounds traveled with her husband from coast to coast with his job. She later went to work for Douglas Guardian Insurance of Houston, Texas, which led her back to Drexel.

Surviving are her parents, Russell and Mabel Lee of Drexel; two brothers, Joseph Lee of St. Clair and Gordon Lee of Drexel; and four sisters, Marti Huffman and Paula Doran, both of Overland Park, Rita Rose of Lenexa and Stacy Bloodgood of Spring Hill.

A memorial service was Monday at Runyan Funeral Home in Drexel.

Memorials have been established in her name to the Drexel Community Betterment Association.

Wilhelmeina Rika Debrick
OCT. 14, 1902 - SEPT. 24, 2003

Wilhelmeina Rika Debrick, 100, lifelong Paola area resident, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, in Louisburg Care Center.

"Minnie," as she was known, was born Oct. 14, 1902, near Block in Miami County. She was the daughter of John and Rika Berg Cahman.

She was baptized Nov. 9, 1902, and confirmed April 16, 1902, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Block. She was a lifelong member of the church.

She and Edward Theodore Debrick were married Dec. 26, 1923, in Paola. After their marriage, they farmed and lived on the farm on which she grew up until 1948, when they moved to Paola. They were the parents of three children. Her husband preceded her in death June 1, 1985.

Mrs. Debrick moved to an apartment in Paola in 1988 and had lived at the care center for the last four years.

She was a devout Christian, a caring person, and loved her family and friends. She was an accomplished seamstress and a gifted artist. She played the organ and loved to create crafts and raise flowers.

Five sisters and three brothers were among those preceding her in death.

Surviving are her daughter, Doris Rodewald of Paola; two sons, Arnold Debrick of Paola and Roland Debrick of Garnett; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services were Saturday in the church and burial was in the Block Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church in care of Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

John Walter Dennis
NOV. 27, 1953 - SEPT. 26, 2003

John Walter Dennis, 49, Paola, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, in Olathe Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 27, 1953, in Sedan, Kan., the son of Frank Allen and Myrtle Florine Foland Dennis. He attended high school in Alma, Kan., before moving to Ottawa.

Mr. Dennis worked at Ottawa Steel Factory for some time before moving to Paola. Most of his recent years were spent in the Osawatomie and Paola areas. He had been employed at J&J Metal Products in Paola since May 1988 and worked in the fabricating department. He recently left the company due to illness.

He enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, listening to music, riding his mo-ped and fishing. He enjoyed the many people with whom he worked at J&J Metal.

Surviving are his mother, Myrtle Dennis of Manhattan; three children, Christie and Misty, both of Wellsville, and Jonny of St. Joseph, Mo.; two brothers, Gary G. Dennis of Osawatomie and Frank A. Dennis of Paola; and two sisters, Shirley Woellhof and Barbara Bailey, both of Manhattan.

Graveside services were Monday in the Osawatomie Cemetery under the direction of Wilson and Son Funeral Home of Paola.
