Artis Williams, 51, Bolingbrook, Ill., died April 20, 2004, at Hinsdale Hospital, Hindsdale, Ill. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. May 1. Burial in Highland Park Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 18, 1953, in Ashland, Miss.

Survivors include his wife Rose Williams, Bolingbrook, Ill.

David Dobson

David Dobson, 40, Topeka, Kan., formerly of Kansas City, Kan., died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka. Services were 10 a.m. Friday, May 14, at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, with burial following at the Iconium Cemetery in Iconium, Mo. Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family requests any contributions be made to Stormont-Vail.

David was born March 30, 1964, in KCK.

Survivors include his mother, Betty A. Dobson; his father, Paul D. Dobson; his sister, Paula Holyfield; one nephew; and one nieces, all of KCK.

Frances Lee Hester

Frances Lee Hester, 63, died April 26, 2004, at the Edwardsville Convalescent. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 17, at the First Central Church of the Brethren. Interment is at Maple Hill Cemetery.

She had lived in the area about 15 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

She is survived by two children; four grandchildren; two sisters; one brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha E. Mattern

Martha E. Mattern, 101, Bonner Springs, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at CLC of Bonner Springs. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice.

Martha was born Dec. 15, 1902, in LaCygne, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband, August E. Mattern, in 1967, one daughter, Marian K. Jones, in 1986, and one grandson, Robert E. Jones, in 1997.

Survivors include one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Thomas Napiecek

Thomas Napiecek, 67, Olathe, Kan., died May 12, 204, at his home. The Memorial Service of Resurrection will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 17, at the Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, Kan. Cremation. Visitation will be at noon before the service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Church Memorial Fund.

He was born Oct. 17, 1936, in Kansas City, Kan. He grew up in KCK and moved to Olathe 18 years ago. He was a graduate of Wyandotte High School where he was a member of the swim team. He was an electrical engineer and vice president of Dearborn Midwest Conveyor Co. of KCK. He worked there 43 years and retired in January 2004. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gardner, Kan. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and then graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's and master's degree in engineering. He married Barbara Jean Sheeds Napiecek on March 2, 1955, in KCK. He was a loving husband and father, and also a fair man in his business dealings. He will be dearly missed. We pray God will accept his soul in heaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Napiecek and Mary Engelbrecht Napiecek, and two daughters, Pamela Ann Hennessey, and Jamie Ann Napiecek.

Survivors include one daughter, Jill Ann Napiecek, Olathe; one brother, John Napiecek; two brothers-in-law, the Rev. Jerry Sheeds, Gardner, and Ronnie Sheeds, KCK; and one sister-in-law, Gina Harrison, Ottawa, Kan.

Irene M. Adams

Irene M. Adams, 83, Shawnee, Kan., died May 15, 2004. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Maple Hill Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to Kansas Advocates for Better Care, 913 Tennessee, Ste. 2, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Irene was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Kansas City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Adams, in 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Lenette Hamm and Nancy Clark; one sister, Mary Billington; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Jack O. Bates

Jack O. Bates, 82, Cameron, Mo., formerly of Hamilton, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., died on May 15, 2004, at the Missouri Veteran's Home, Cameron. He had retired from the Kansas City, Kan., Board of Education in December 1981 after serving more than 20 years.

Born on Nov. 26, 1981, in KCK, to Vernon and Louise Orlowski Bates, he had served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Jack was a member of the United Methodist Church, Hamilton, and he had been a member of several fraternal organizations including The Delaware No. 96 Masonic Blue Lodge, The Scottish Rite, York Rite, Past Supreme Advisor of the True Kindred Lodge, Abdallah Shrine directors staff, KCCH, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a life member of the Bethel Memorial Post VFW and American Legion, a Kansas National Guard member and a volunteer at the Missouri Veteran's Home, Cameron.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Walter, Willis, Vernon and Elmer, and one sister Eleanor.

Jack married Cora Mary Lelia Ross on Oct. 29, 1944, in Bentonville, Ark. She survives of the home.

Other survivors includes four daughters, Jackie Salas, Mesa, Ariz., Barbara Robinson, Sunrise Beach, Mo., Lynne Haug, Stilwell, Kan., and Ruth Ann Alrick, Troy, Ohio; one son, Leslie Bates, Hamilton; two brothers, Clyde, KCK, and Ralph, Shawnee, Kan.; one sister, Edith Horner, KCK; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The body was been cremated. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, and 7 p.m. May 18, at the United Methodist Church, Hamilton. Inurnment at a later date at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jack Bates Memorial Fund in care of the Bram Funeral Home, 208 E. School St., Hamilton, MO 64644.

Sandra Rae Burdge

Sandra Raw Burdge, 61, died May 6, 2004. Survivors include her three children, Kim (Tharon), Howard and Michael Burdge; her mother, Ruth Simpson; one brother, Dale Simpson; and three grandchildren, Shawn, Joshua (Becky) and Amanda Howard. Services were held in St. Louis.

K. Rondell Cooper

K. Rondell Cooper, 74, Tonganoxie, Kan., died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at his home. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, at the West Haven Baptist Church in Tonganoxie. Burial at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Palco Cemetery, Palco, Kan. Friends called 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund.

He was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Chanute, Kan. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian Sutor Cooper, in 1977, and his father, the Rev. Kenneth G. Cooper in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Heald Cooper, of the home; two sons, James Leon Cooper, Ames, Iowa, and Kenneth J. Kolb, of Watertown, Minn.; one daughter, Linda Sue Rathje, of the Ukraine; his mother, Ada Cooper, of the home; one brother, Jeral G. Cooper, Tonganoxie; one sister, Carol F. Grungardt, Bella Vista, Ark.; seven grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Gary Lee Gray

Gary Lee Gray was born July 15, 1953, in Las Vegas, and his sudden demise was May 6, 2004. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at Mt. Carmel COGIC. Cremation.

He leaves his wife, Debra Stafford Gray; three daughters, Brigette B. Gray, Dionne and Charla Stafford; four grandsons; his mother-in-law, Barbara Collins Smith; two brothers and eight sisters; and other family and friends.

Pauline V. McClure

Pauline V. McClure, 90, Kansas City, Kan., died Friday, May 14, 2004, at the Life Care Center of Kansas City. Funeral services were 1 p.m. Monday, May 17, at the Porter Funeral Home. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.

Pauline was born Feb. 11, 1914, in Webb City, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 1981.

Survivors include one son, Alan McClure; one grandson; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nadine Bennet.

Alice Yokum Porterfield

Alice Yokum Porterfield, 74, Shawnee, Kan., died May 13, 2004, at the Indian Creek Nursing Home. Memorial services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at Maple Hill Funeral Home.

Mrs. Porterfield was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Atlas, Ill. She was preceded in death by one son, Darren Porterfield, and one brother and one sister.

Survivors include one daughter, Suzy McCallum, KCK; sons, Mike Ward, Arbyrd, Mo., Mark Ward, Troy, Mo., and Monte Porterfield, Shawnee, Kan.; one brother, Jon Payne, Chicago; one sister, Pat Tuchrello, Colorado Springs, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Jake Robinson

Jake Robinson, 81, Kansas City, Kan., died May 16, 2004, at the Life Care Center of Kansas City. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at Maple Hill Funeral Home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Robinson was born in Prescott, Ark. Survivors include his wife, Marseal Robinson, of the home; four sons, Clarence Robinson, Georgia, Curtis Robinson, Gilbert, Ariz., Bobby Robinson, North Kansas City, Mo., and Kennet Robinson, Peyton, Colo.; six daughters, Carol Funtes and Sherry Ashworth, both of Kansas City, Mo., Charlene Taylor, Sugar Creek, Mo., Tina Martinez, Colorado Springs, Colo., Nana Edwards, Oregon, and Donna Robinson; one step-son, Henry Reygaert, KCK; two step-daughters, Barbara Jennings, KCK and Kay Richard Gosnell, Arkansas; one brother, Harvey Robinson, Ozark, Ark.; two sisters, Irene Frisby, Ozark, and Louise Cross, Benton, Ark.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Earl Sagebiel

Earl Sagebiel died peacefully Saturday, May 15, 2004, at North Kansas City Hospital surrounded by his family. There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at the McMurry United Methodist Church, 25 Eugene Field Road, Claycomo, Mo. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Wall at McMurry.

Earl was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Bird City, Kan. As a child, he moved with his family to Elkart, Kan., then to Paonia, Colo. There, he completed his high school years, graduating with honors at the age of 14. He held a series of interesting and exciting jobs, ranging from big game guide and cowboy in his early years, to a variety of sales positions in his later years.

He married Viola Eastwood in 1947, and their union produced two girls and one boy. Viola and Earl have had a rewarding marriage of 56 years. They traveled extensively and shared many wonderful memories of interesting and amazing places around the world. He was active in the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one son, Rocky Alan. He leaves his wife, Viola, two daughters, Kay Ellen Sosa and Julie Roxene Patrick, one sister, Deb Sagebiel, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Earl was a quiet man who led an extraordinary life. Stories of his experiences entertained family and friends throughout his years. Those who knew him will remember his easy laugh, his sense of humor, his willingness to find the good in everyone he met. He lived a life of grace and dignity, leaving a legacy that will live on.

Mary Lou Smith

Mary Lou Smith, 59, Kansas City, Kan., died May 11, 2004, at the home. Memorial services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 17, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Friends called 10 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, where the Rosary was said at 10:20 a.m.

Mary Lou was born in Chicago.

Survivors include one son, Bradley Altis Smith, Shawnee, Kan.; and one brother, Robert A. Gorkin, Dover, Del.

Troy Joseph Chilson

Troy Joseph Chilson, 10, Bonner Springs and Basehor, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, in Bonner Springs. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at the Bonner Springs Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Bonner Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to the TJ Chilson Memorial Fund in care of Commercial State Bank, 309 Oak St., Bonner Springs, KS 66012.

T.J. was born Oct. 29, 1993, in Kansas City, Kan., He was a fourth-grader at Glenwood Ridge Elementary School in Basehor. T.J. loved his pets, the outdoors and fishing.

Survivors include his mother, Diane Phillips, and husband John, Bonner Springs; his father, Joe Chilson, and wife Michelle, rural Bonner Springs; four sisters, Nina Davis, Emily Thomas, Josie Chilson and JulieAna Phillips, all of Bonner Springs; one brother, Steven Shaul; maternal grandparents, Ana and Serafin Galvan, Shawnee, Kan.; paternal grandparents, Joye and John Davis, Linwood, Kan., and Mike and Jackie Chilson, California; two paternal grandmothers, Treva Hinds and Maxine Chilson, both of KCK; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, family and friends.

Peggy A. DeFries

Peggy A. DeFries, 70, Edwardsville, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Providence Medical Center. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 20, at the Grinter Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Action in care of the funeral home.

Peggy was born on Dec. 31, 1933, in Edwardsville.

Survivors include her husband, Ted, of the home; two sons, Ted DeFries, and Terry DeFries, Tabatha, Kan., KCK; two daughters, Sue Black and Peggy Anne School, both of KCK; two sisters, Patsy Dunn, Bonner Springs, and Jane McMillan, Edwardsville; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-grandsons on the way.
