EVA MARGARET "PEGGY" CARPENTER
SAN DIEGO -- Eva Margaret "Peggy" Carpenter, 80, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at her home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
She was born July 11, 1919, to George Arthur and Ettie Myrtle (Kempf) Trahern on a farm near Sublette.
She married Billie Dean Carpenter Dec. 22, 1940, in Pratt. He died in 1998.
She moved in 1942 to Denver, where she and her husband resided until 1959, when they moved to Southern California.
She was a homemaker and was active in running the family farms in Stevens and Texas counties. She also managed the family investments.
Her hobbies included bingo.
Survivors include one daughter, Karon K. Carpenter and husband, Boyd, Simi Valley, Calif.; one son, Billie Ray Carpenter, Pinecliffe, Colo.; one brother, Orval Trahern, Delta, Colo.; one sister, Betty Lindenberger, Westminster, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Shawna Carpenter, Arvada, Colo., Chad Carpenter, Glendale, Ariz.; Mark Carpenter, Tucson, Ariz; and Kurt Carpenter, San Francisco.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Vern and Merle Trahern.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Paul's Memorial Chapel, Hugoton, with the Rev. Charles Waugh presiding. Burial will follow at the Hugoton Cemetery, Hugoton.
Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.
VERN A. THOMPSON
Johnson -- Vern A. Thompson, 76, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 8, 1923, to Fred L. and Leila (Reece) Thompson on his parents' farm in Stafford County, Kansas.
He married Jean Johnson Nov. 29, 1944, in Trousdale. She survives.
He was a resident of Johnson since 1954. He farmed and ranched in Hamilton, Morton, Kearney and Stanton Counties.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as a board member. He was also a member of Odd Fellow Lodge and held several offices. He was a past Nobel Grand of the Odd Fellow Lodge, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a former Johnson city council member, a Farm Bureau board member, and a Garden City Production Credit Association board member.
He served in World War II, Company G, 13th Infantry, Eighth Army, in Europe.
He loved family, the mountains, running the combine and rain.
Other survivors include three sons, David Thompson and wife, Debbie, Great Bend, Keith Thompson and wife, Linda, Johnson, and Mark Thompson and wife, Deborah, Lawrence; three daughters, Linda McCann and husband, Ralph, St. Peters, Mo., Janet Cassing and husband, Dave, Aurora, Ore., and Karen Markley and husband, Howard, Syracuse; two brothers, Harold Thompson, Syracuse, and Loren Thompson, Macksville; one sister, Verlie Bennett, Syracuse; thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo presiding. Burial will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson.

MARY JO TOURNADE
PLAINS -- Mary Jo Tournade, 73, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at her residence in Plains.
She was born June 11, 1927, to Nathan B. and Elma (Blackstun) Hayse in Greensburg.
She married Merle LeRoy Tournade April 16, 1945, near Tyler, Texas. He died Oct. 4, 1992.
She was a retired restaurant owner and operator and lived in Plains since January 1963.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Plains. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Liberal.
Survivors include one son, Rusty Tournade, Meade; two daughters, Zita Bond, Girard, and Judy Powell, Meade; three brothers, Nathan Hayse, Mullinville, Carl Hayse, Greensburg, and Paul Hayse, Pratt; one sister, Myra Smith, Medicine Lodge; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ralph R. Tournade who died Sept. 11, 1967, and Larry Wayne Tournade who died Aug. 22, 1985; and one brother, Lewie Hayse.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Plains, with the Revs. Vernon Maelzer and Christine Peterson presiding. Burial will follow at the Plains Cemetery, Plains.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. tonight at Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Meade.

MILDRED L. TATON
SATANTA -- Mildred L. Taton, 83, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born April 27, 1917, to Edgar Richard and Bertha Bell (Baker) Roberts in Elkhart.
She married George E. Taton Aug. 17, 1935, in Syracuse. He died Nov. 17, 1988.
She was a member of the Pleasant Prairie Church of God in Satanta.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Taton, Denver, and Ronald Taton, Denver; one daughter, Dolores Szekula, Lakin; two half-brothers, Robert Otto and Don Otto, both of California; and nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Pleasant Prairie Church of God, Satanta, with the Rev. Fred Hauck II presiding. Burial will follow at the Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.

EARL BOYER WILLIAMS
ULYSSES -- Earl Boyer Williams, 90, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Jan. 12, 1910, to Fred C. and Artilisa (Boyer) Williams in Edwards County.
He married Loretta Gentry Sept. 24, 1930, in Kinsley. She preceded him in death.
He moved to Ulysses in 1931 from Kinsley.
He was a farmer and livestock man.
He was a member of the Church of Christ, past member of Rotary, and served as president of Pioneer Communications for 50 years, all of Ulysses.
He was a community minded man, and loved children.
Survivors include two sons, Milton Williams and wife, Pauly, Dallas Center, Iowa, and Don Williams and wife, Helen, Ulysses; one daughter, Joan Beaumont and husband, Warren, Hemphill, Texas; and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, William and Dale Williams.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Grant County Cemetery, Ulysses, with Don Williams, Kerry Williams and Mike Williams presiding.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday and from 2-8 p.m. at the Grant County Funeral Home.

LORIE H. HATCHER
SATANTA -- Lorie H. Hatcher, 79, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at her home in Satanta.
She was born Jan. 21, 1921, to George and Charlotte Bales in Grant County.
She married Henry Hatcher Oct. 11, 1943, in Liberal. He died Jan. 17, 1992.
She was a lifetime resident of the Grant County area.
She was a tax accountant for over 40 years and co-owner of the farm.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, O.E.S., and United Methodist Women, all of Satanta. She was also a member of the Tax Preparers Association.
She enjoyed Bible study and stain glass craft.
Survivors include one son, Bill Hatcher and wife, Marcia, Satanta; two grandchildren, Jessica and Will Hatcher, Satanta; three sisters, Doris Kimbrell, Ensign, Mary Bales, New Haven, Conn., and Eva Stubbs, Whitewater.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Calvin Bales and George Bales.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Larry Myers presiding. Burial will follow at the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta

ROBERT C. GUGELMAN
Robert C. Gugelman, 75, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center - St. Francis in Wichita.
He was born Aug. 12, 1924, to Frederick and Viola (Swortz) Gugelman in Stockville, Neb.
He married Ruth Johnson Dec. 6, 1963, in Las Vegas. She survives.
He was a resident of Liberal since 1968, after moving from Colorado.
He was a 1941 graduate of Stockville High School.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 10th Mountain Division during World War II.
He was a truck driver for 40 years. The last 20 years, before his retirement Jan. 1, 1989, were spent driving for Yellow Freight Systems.
He was a life long member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lane Day Post No. 3166, and a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1947, both of Liberal.
His hobbies included drag racing, hunting and fishing.
Other survivors include two sons, Robert D. Gugelman and wife, Denise, Loveland, Colo., Billy Joe Gugelman and wife, Barbara, Newcastle, Colo.; two daughters, Darla Starman and husband, Bob, Loveland, Bonnie Schneider and husband, Michael, Wellington, Colo.; one brother, Don Gugelman and wife, Marilyn, Stockville; and six grandchildren, Maggie Reye, Christopher Joseph Gugelman, Layla Stone and husband, Leighton, Lona Lesser, Jon Jackson, and Jennifer Jackson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kitch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Odle presiding. Cremation will take place and the remains will be interred at a later date in Colorado.
