ULYSSES -- Shannan Valdez, 33, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at her home in Ulysses.
She was born Dec. 22, 1968, to Donald L. and Peggy (Watie) Phelps in Ulysses.
She married Mike Valdez Nov. 22, 1996, in Ulysses. He survives.
She was a graduate of Ulysses High School.
She was a pen rider at Grant County Feeders in Ulysses.
She was a member of the Ulysses Bit and Spur Club, Little Britches Rodeo, High School Rodeo and the Ulysses 4-H Club.
Other survivors include her parents; Ulysses; three sons, Brance, Bravane Phelps, and Brady Valdez, Ulysses; two daughters, Britley Phelps and Sha Ane Valdez, both of Ulysses; one step-son, Michael James Valdez, Ulysses; one brother, Brandon Phelps, Ness City; one sister, Susanne Phelps, Ulysses; grandfather, Joe Watie, Jetmore; and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by three grandparents, Jeff Phelps, Dorothy Phelps and Modene Watie.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Ulysses with Warren Baldwin and Galen Smith presiding.
Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.

CLAUDEANE F. JOYCE
ULYSSES -- Claudeane F. Joyce, 77, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit in Satanta.
She was born Nov. 6, 1925, to Claude and Lilaha (Pryor) Bolen in Larned.
She married Owen Merle Tully Sept. 29, 1947. He died in 1965.
She married Harry Joyce May 20, 1983. He died May 27, 2002.
She grew up in Dodge City and moved to Ulysses.
She owned and operated Joyce Tax Service in Ulysses.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both in Ulysses.
Survivors include two sons, Mark Tully, Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Owen Merle Tully and wife, Twanda, Satanta; three daughters, Sydney Manderfeld and husband, Dan, Evanston, Wyo., Leslie Davis and husband, Mike, Durango, Colo., and Rene DuPree and husband, Brad, Hutchinson; two step-sons, Robert Joyce Jr. and wife, Kat, Aurora, Colo., and Richard M. Joyce and wife, Linda, Oakley; one step-daughter, Rebecca Joyce, Moriarty, N.M.; one brother, James Bolen and wife, Clara Faye, Brighten, Colo.; one sister, Lilaha Lea Bolen, Wichita; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and one daughter-in-law, Janice Tully.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Ulysses with the Rev. Dennis Livingston presiding.
Burial will be at Ulysses Cemetery
in Ulysses.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.

CARLOS HERRERA JR.
HUGOTON -- Carlos Herrera Jr., 69, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
He was born Jan. 14, 1933, to Carlos Sr. and Iola (Gregory) Herrera in Trinidad, Colo.
He married Annie Romero June 2, 1984, in Hugoton. She survives.
He moved from Pueblo, Colo., to Hugoton in 1976.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He worked on a section crew for Santa Fe Railroad for 23 years.
Other survivors include three sons, Curt Herrera, Cerritos, Calif., Robert Herrera and Stephen Herrera, both of Garden Grove, Calif.; one daughter, Melody Carpenter, Brea, Calif.; three step-daughters, Elsie Rivera, Guymon, Okla., Mary Ann Roybal, Hooker, Okla., and Vickey Cordova, Stinnette, Texas; one half-brother, Kenneth "Sonny" Doescher, Phoenix; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Rick Herrera.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton with the Rev. Robert Bailey presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Vets Group of Hugoton.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Paul's Funeral Home.

LEWIS MACE
Johnson -- Lewis Mace, 72, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Johnson.
He was born March 15, 1930, to Marion and Martha Jane (Wheeler) Mace in Liberal.
He married Evelyn Edgar Dec. 31, 1955, in Kinsley. She survives.
He was the owner and operator of Sinclair Gas Station and Tire Shop in Johnson. He also did automotive repair work until 1999.
He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict.
His hobbies included automotive repair work, gardening and tending roses.
Other survivors include two sons, Arthur W. Mace, Owasso, Okla., and LeRoy K. Mace, Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Marsha S. Mace, Liberal, and Martha L. Hardin, Cheyenne, Wyo.; one brother, Donnie Mace, Cheney; two sisters, Darlene Mace, Haysville, and Carolyn Fournier, Bartlesville, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Art Card.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Johnson with the Rev. Glenn Fogo presiding.
Burial will be at Stanton County Cemetery
in Johnson with military graveside rites conducted by Johnson VFW Post No. 3684.

ARNOLD J. JANZEN
MOUNDRIDGE -- Arnold J. Janzen, 92, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Memorial Home in Moundridge.
He was born April 18, 1910, to Peter H. and Marie (Eitzen) Janzen in Syracuse.
He married Martha Dick April 15, 1934, in Turpin, Okla. She died Sept. 26, 2002.
He was a resident of Moundridge for 15 years, having moved from Turpin.
He was a farmer and former employee of Liberal Standard Supply.
He was a member of First Mennonite Church of Christian in Moundridge.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Janzen and wife, Mary, North Newton; two daughters, Wilma Loganbill and husband, Earl, Hesston, and Nola Stucky and husband, Jim, North Newton; one sister, Dorothy Sangals, Clearwater; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Erwin Janzen; one sister, Edna Bartel; and one grandson, David Toews.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First Mennonite Church Cemetery
in rural Moundridge.
Memorial services will follow at 2 p.m. at First Mennonite Church of Christian in Moundridge with the Pastor Gordon Allaby presiding.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Moundridge Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.

DORIS J. HAM
HUGOTON -- Doris Juanita Ham, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.
She was born Dec. 3, 1909, to Loyal Luster and Mable Nettie (Miller) Hogan in Stevens County.
She married Wendell James Ham Aug. 4, 1927, in Moscow. He died June 15, 1976.
She graduated from Hugoton High School in 1927 and was valedictorian of her class.
She was a lifetime resident of Stevens County.
She was a homemaker and helpmate on the farm.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Hugoton, where she taught Sunday School for many years; Hugoton Saddle Club and High Point HDU. She was active in the State Farm Bureau.
Survivors include two sisters, Dessie Wilson, Hugoton, and Hazel Timken and husband, Linly, Hugoton; two nephews; five nieces; five great-nephews; three great-nieces; 12 great-great-nephews and nieces; and numerous other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Vera Frances Ham; one brother, Marvin Miller Hogan; and one sister, Virga Elizabeth Barton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Hugoton with the Pastors Jeff Aenk and Larry Bradford presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home in Hugoton.
