ELLINWOOD - Opal Marshall, 92, died Jan. 25 at her residence in Ellinwood. She was born Nov. 21, 1909 at Melvern, the daughter of Robert Hayes Alley and Hattie Ione Allison. She was 1927 graduate of Melvern High School, and attended Kansas Normal School. She married
Paul S. Marshall May 23, 1931 at Cottonwood Falls. He died Oct. 20, 1987. A resident Ellinwood since 1956 coming from Eureka, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Marshall was a member of United Methodist Church and Heritage Club both in Ellinwood. Survivors include one son Larry Marshall of Pawnee Rock; two grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister Wilmeta Athon. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kimple Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Wolf officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday all at the funeral home. Dallas Scott Kerns 1956-2002
LARNED - Dallas Scott Kerns, 45, died Jan. 23 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born June 4, 1956, in Larned, the son of Bill C. and Joyce L. Meckfessel Kerns. He married
Cheryl Marie Albert Steffen Jan. 18, 2001. A resident of Great Bend for two years, coming from Larned, he was project manager for information systems at Central Kansas Medical Center. Kerns was a member of First Christian Church in Larned. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Garrett Kerns and Tyson Steffen, both of Great Bend; one daughter, Teresa Steffen of Great Bend; his father of Larned; two brothers, Cory Kerns of Windsor, Colo. and Ryan Kerns of Highland; and two sisters, Leesa Swenson of Arvada, Colo. and Angie Kerns of Larned. Donald Richard Tillery 1916-2002
MACKSVILLE - Donald Richard Tillery, 85, died Jan. 23 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born Dec. 6, 1916, in rural Iuka, the son of Edward and Lula McMahel Tillery. He married
Farol Fox July 24, 1955, in Bakersfield. A resident of Macksville since 1965, he worked as meat market manager for Dillons in St. John and owned a grocery store in Macksville. He was a distributor for Mountain Man Candy. Tillery was a member of Free Methodist Church of Macksville, Masonic Lodge and charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of St. John, and American Legion of Stafford. He was a former mayor of Macksville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Richard Tillery of Washington, D.C. and Ron Tillery of Kearney, Neb.; one daughter, Tammie Bartsch of Hutchinson; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Tillery, Clarence "Beanie" Tillery and James Tillery; and four sisters, Margerie "Polly" Bandurraga, Lillian Feldhut, Ermal Parker and Lovell Lattimore. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Larry Popovich officiating. Burial will be at Iuka cemetery with military honors. IRVING, Texas - Velda C. Irey, 75, died Jan. 24 at Baylor Medical Center in Irving, Texas. She was born May 25, 1926, in Stafford County, the daughter of Alvin Lee and Hulda Witt Tieperman. She married
James E. Irey April 19, 1953, in Hudson. A resident of Irving, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Irey was a member of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Joe Irey of Irving; one daughter, Kathy Stearns of Irving; one brother, Lee Roy Tieperman of Tulsa, Okla.; and one grandson. Glen Dale Warren 1960-2002
LARNED - Glenn Dale Warren, 41, died Jan. 20 at his home in Larned. He was born Dec. 2, 1960, in Hutchinson, the son of Glenn A. D. and June Ruby Hancock Warren. A resident of Larned, he worked as a laborer. Warren was of the Christian faith. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Barbara R. Warren of Great Bend; his mother of Garden City; one brother, Randy Warren of Severy; four stepbrothers, Vernon Hicks and Wendell Hicks, both of Nowata, Okla., Paul Hicks of Oologah, Okla. and Delbert Hicks of Hawaii; and one stepsister, Cheryl Vincent of Sacramento, Calif. He was preceded in death by one son, Jamie Dale Warren; two stepbrothers, Steve Vincent and Scott Vincent; and one stepsister, Susan Lange. HOISINGTON - Eldois "Jim" Wilson, 76, died Jan. 23 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Piggott, Ark., the son of Milo J. and Lovie Green Wilson. He married
Martha Rosemary Humphrey Sept. 20, 1946, in Ellinwood. She died Jan. 21, 1987. A lifelong resident of Hoisington, he retired from Kansas Brick and Tile in 1988. Wilson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include three sons, James E. Wilson of Commache, Okla., Richard D. Wilson of Susank and William R. Wilson of Ketchum, Okla.; three daughters, Mary J. Allen of Susank, Lois A. Sander of Wichita and Margaret J. Wilson of Hutchinson; his mother of Piggott; one brother, Maurice Wilson of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Glenda Wilson of Piggott; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Odell Wilson and Bill Wilson; and two grandchildren, Rhonda Rose Evans and Michael Damian Wilson. CONCORDIA, Mo. - Roland Steitz, 84, died Jan. 21 at Good Shepherd Home in Concordia. He was born July 20, 1917, in Bison, the son of Peter P. and Margaretha Elisa "Lizzie" Popp Steitz. He married
Helen J. Serpan Aug. 21, 1938, in Otis. She died Dec. 23, 1999. A resident of Concordia, coming from Kansas City, Washington, Mo., Barton County and Rush County, he worked as a farmer, oil field worker, carpenter, insurance agent, bus driver and janitor. Steitz was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Concordia. Survivors include one son, Roger L. Steitz of Concordia, Mo.; one daughter, Carolynn Kay Kopper of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Gary R. Clayton officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bohemian National cemetery in Timken. Ernest J. Huslig 1917-2002
Ernest J. Huslig, 84, of Great Bend, died Jan. 21 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 28, 1917, in rural Claflin, the son of Henry and Johanna Miller Huslig. He married
Audry M. Moeder. She died Sept. 17, 1994. A resident of Great Bend since 1955, coming from Claflin, he worked as a conservation officer for Wildlife and Parks and was also in law enforcement. Huslig was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, serving as past post commander, all of Great Bend, Kansas Peace Officers Association and AARP. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons, James P. Huslig of Wichita and David C. Huslig of Great Bend; one brother, Wilbert Huslig of Overland Park; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Huslig, Robert Huslig and Leonard Huslig; and four sisters, Marie Bailey, Helen Debes, Sister Loyola and Sister Ann Lang. Rosary followed by a K of C rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. LA CROSSE - Martin E. Hemken, 84, died Jan. 22 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born June 21, 1917, on the family farm, south of Rush Center, the son of William and Katherine Wagner Hemken. He was a 1935 graduate of La Crosse Rural High School and attended Fort Hays College. He married
Bonnie Zimmerman Aug. 23, 1942, in Hays. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a farmer before he retired. He also operated a Farm Implement Business in partnership and independently in La Crosse, Russell and Lexington, Neb. Hemken was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center, former mayor of La Crosse from 1966-67, 37 years on the Rush Center Co-op board of directors, charter member of the Wet Walnut Watershed, charter member of Rush County Nursing Home, charter member of Rush County Historical Society, board of directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank of La Crosse, advisory board for Farmers Bank and Trust in La Crosse, 32nd Degree Mason, Isis Shrine Member and Fort Hays Shrine Club Member. Survivors include his wife of the home; and two sisters, Hilda Hagerman of La Crosse and Wanda Karst of Rush Center. He was preceded in death by one sister, Verna E. Voight. HOISINGTON - James "Jim" M. Boor, 54, died Jan. 20 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Dec. 20, 1947, in Great Bend, the son of Matt J. and Margaret L. Axman Boor. He attended Odin Elementary and High School. A lifelong resident of rural Hoisington and Odin, he was self employed as a mechanic and farmer. Boor was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin. He was a U.S. Army Reserves veteran. Survivors include his parents of rural Hoisington; one brother, Lawrence Boor of Great Bend; and three sisters, Loretta Finger and Donna Bates, both of Hoisington, and Judy Conley of Wichita. He was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Boor. Family rosary will be at 7 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
