BENTON COVINGTON

Benton Spears Covington, 81, of Harrodsburg, widower of Faye Buffin Covington, died Saturday, March 12, 2011.

He was the son of Holland and Mary Covington of South Carolina. He was a retired IBM machinist of 29 years, member of the Quarter Century Club, served in the South Carolina National Guard and Korean Veteran Tank Division.

He is survived by three children: Rebecca Dawn Smith of Frankfort, Benton Keith (Linda) Covington of Georgetown and Rachel Alicenia (Donald) Powers of Versailles; a brother, Raymond Covington of Kingstree, SC; a sister, Janice Russell of Sumter, SC; four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred Covington and four sisters: Eleanor Butler, Emily Clayton, Eunice Barrineau and Florene Harrington.

Graveside services Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Lexington. Milward Funeral Services-Broadway, Lexington, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Dr., Lexington, KY 40504.

ELEANOR CURTIS

Eleanor Carr Curtis, 89, wife of David Curtis, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011.

Born March 5, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Omar and Edna Dean Carr Sr. She taught Sunday School at Corinth Baptist Church for thirty years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: David (Lynda) Curtis of Atlanta, GA; Diane (Marcus Manning) Curtis of Lexington; Jerry (Tina) Curtis of Corinth and Ken Curtis of Atlanta, GA; a brother, Lynn Carr of Corinth; four sisters: Jean Dearinger of Harrodsburg, Iris Hardin of Burgin, Betty Johnson of Georgetown, Rachel (Max) Sanders of Burgin; a cousin, Annelle Collier of Perryville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Martin and two brothers, Omar “Sonny” and Lawrence Carr.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Ralph Neal officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Jake Curtis, Sam Curtis, Peyton Manning, John Curtis, Jerry Curtis, Ken Curtis and David Curtis.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Corinth Baptist Church, 235 Church St., Corinth, KY 41010-3036.

NICOLE DAILEY

Nicole Dailey, 28, wife of Jason Dailey of Harrodsburg, died Monday, March 14, 2011 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Born February 5, 1983 in Versailles, she was the daughter of James Ricky and Kimberly Ann Edwards of Harrodsburg. She was a homemaker and enjoyed fishing, hiking, being outdoors and going to flea markets and yard sales.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by two daughters: Kirsten Carey and Katelynn Dailey; a son, James Dailey, all of Harrodsburg; a sister Alisha Edwards of Harrodsburg; maternal grandfather, Roger Hall of Lawrenceburg and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Brandon Edwards.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. today (Thursday, March 17, 2011) at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home. Bro. Larry Moore will be officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers are: Ronnie Dailey, Cody Baker, Donald Edwards, Steve Watts, Jeremiah Edwards and Steve Gayhart.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home.

MELVIN ELDER

Melvin G. Elder, 65, of Harrodsburg, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2011.

Born October 2nd, 1945, in Danville, he was the son of the late Otis Elder and Pearlie Maupin Elder.

Melvin retired from North American Phillips where he worked for 39 years. He loved playing golf and fishing.

Survivors include: his loving wife Peggy Elder; one son, Doug (Karen) Elder of Danville; and one daughter, Cindy (Tim) Underwood of Danville; two step-daughters, Samantha (Jeff) Sims of Harrodsburg and Dawn (Brian) Mardis of Campbellsville. Additional survivors include siblings, Clysten Elder, Lena Cross, and Hubert Elder. Melvin is also survived by three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren who he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by a son, Troy Elder and siblings, Les Elder, Jim Elder, Ruth Wilson, Richard Elder and Delbert Elder.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 16, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Pastor Barry Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Lockhart, Robert Mitchell, Robert Taylor, Delbert Elder, Jim Hogue, Bob Wilson, Davis Nevius, Chuck Robbins and Caesar Smalley.

Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Hatfield, Mike Qualls and grandchildren Ben Underwood, Zack Underwood and Val Elder.

JEFFERY JEWELL

Jeffery Jewell, 43, husband of Cindy Chapman Jewell, died Friday March 11, 2011 at his residence.

Born in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late William and Essie Starnes Jewell.

Mr. Jewell was a car technician and member of Clover Bottom Baptist Church. His hobbies were fishing and flower gardening.

Survivors, other than his wife, include: one son, Joshua (Kayla) Jewell; one brother, Gerald “Bubba” Jewell; two sisters, Teresa (Terry) Lowry and Rita Jewell (Tommy); and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 14, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, by Pastor Joel Braswell and Mr. Leonard Fitch. Burial followed in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

ROBERT PRATHER

Robert Prather, 71, of Salvisa, husband of Marcella Riley Prather, died Sunday, March 12, 2011 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born September 15, 1939 in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Leonard and Beatrice Baker Prather. He was a farmer, contractor and a deacon at Kirkwood Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Joe “Bobby” (Shelia) Prather; a sister, Pauline (Donnie) Tyler; a brother, Lee Prather; two grandchildren: Kenzi Prather and Kasey Harper of Mercer County and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Joe and Curtis Prather; a sister-in-law, Vicki Riley Darland and his mother and father-in-law, Hansford and Mary Riley.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. today (Thursday, March 17) at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Stewart Dawson, Jerel Coffey and Logan Hazelwood officiating. Burial will be in the Kirkwood Cemetery, Salvisa.

Pallbearers are: Alex Garcia, Curry Logue, Zac Lewis, Chuck Nichols, Roger Dotson, Mike Ward, David Sexton and Mark Darnall.

Honorary pallbearers are: nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation Wednesday, March 16, 5 to 8 p.m. and prior to the service on Thursday, March 17.

DORIS VOYLES

Mary Doris “Pat” Patterson Voyles, of Atlanta, GA, widow of Colonel James Homer Voyles Jr., died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Huntcliff Summit in Sandy Springs, GA.

Born April 6, 1924 in Hopewell, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Garnet and Lillian Nichols Patterson. She grew up in Harrodsburg, attended Stratford Business College in Louisville, was a homemaker and formerly worked at Wright Field in Dayton, OH. She was involved in the North Fulton Republican Women’s Club and the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers and was a member of the Church of the Apostles in Atlanta, GA.

She is survived by four children: James Homer (Susan) Voyles III, Robert Patterson (Belle) Voyles and Leslie Ann (John) Voyles Nigh, all of Atlanta, GA and Patricia Louise Voyles of Santa Clarita, CA; two sisters: Beatrice Tatum of Harrodsburg and Helen Tracy of Grand Island, NE; a sister-in-law, Betty Voyles of Sandy Springs, GA; brother-in-law, John (Bonita) Voyles of Monticello, GA; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Billie Jean Patterson of Tifton, GA.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Church of the Apostles in Atlanta, GA.

HERMAN WARD

Herman E. Ward, 77, a Mercer County native, husband of Doris Ann Ward, died Wednesday, March 9 at St. Joseph Hospital.

He was the son of the late Stanley and Mattie Belle Riley Ward. He was the former owner of the Lafayette Barber Shop in Lexington, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of St. Johns Masonic Lodge #125, F&AM, at Salvisa and a member of the Kirkwood Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters: Teresa (Keith) Woodside and Elizabeth (David) Richards, of Versailles, Linda Ward of Frankfort and Brenda Ward-Hill of Lawrenceburg; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Whitney Richards and a great granddaughter, Summer Evans.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, Versailles. Rev. Vern Huber officiated. Burial was in the Versailles Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Jarod Jackson, Jason Jackson, Chris Woodside, Justin Woodside, Ben Hosley, J. C. Hosley, Mike Ward and Bill Hall.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

MARION ANDERSON

Marion Joseph “Andy” Anderson, 85, husband of Mary Florence Shuck Anderson of Hope, IN died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Hope, IN.

Born September 16, 1925 in Lexington, he was the son of the late W. R. and Minnie Bell Thompson Anderson. He was a retired employee of Cosco in Columbus, IN. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hope where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth director and financial secretary. He worked with Gideons International and spoke at many area churches. He was a member and past master of Hope Masonic Lodge. He served on the Flatrock-Hawcreek School Board where he also drove a school bus. He also served on the Blue River Vocational Technical School Board. He was a past president of the former Hope Jaycees and was a Navy veteran of WWII. He enjoyed woodworking and made many things from lumber cut from his own trees.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: James Richard (Cheryl) Anderson of Highbridge, NJ, William K. (Dianna) Anderson of Springhill, FL and Michael (Penny) Anderson of Hope, IN; three brothers: William Garnett Anderson of Columbus, IN, Eugene Anderson of Logansport, IN, Cape Anderson of Lexington; a sister, Dorothy Nichols of Lawrenceburg; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Anderson was preceded in death by two brothers: Roy and Carl Anderson, and two sisters: Bonnie Poulter and Irene Anderson.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel. Burial with military rites will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, March 24 at Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, PO Box 176, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

HELEN BOGARD

Helen MacAfee Glore Bogard, 72, of Danville, died Thursday, March 17, 2011.

Born December 23, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Helen Sanders Glore. She was a graduate of Centre College, a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, owner of Glore Oil Company, Danville Greenhouse and the Danville Royal Crown Cola Bottling Company. She was a member of the Danville Garden Club and the Little Garden Club. She showed and trained five-gaited saddlebred horses. She was a member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Harrodsburg and a founding member of P.O.E.T.S. Club.

Survivors include a son, Duker Bogard and cousins: Cheryl Thompson of Harrodsburg, Margaret “Sissy” Glore Lanier of Louisville and W. Scott Glore III of VA.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at St. Phillips Episcopal Church with Rev. Terry Taylor officiating. Burial was in Bellevue Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Thomas Baughman, William Baughman, Kelley Sims, Geoffrey Clark, Willis Young, Charles Rhodes, John Clay and James F. Clay III.

Honorary pallbearers were: Marion Webb, Robert Hamlin, Jerry Boyd, Tom Sellers, Chuck Eddy and Dean Whitlow.

OMER CAREY

Omer Carey, Jr., 76, of Danville died Wednesday March 16, 2011.

He was born May 16, 1934 in Lancaster, KY to the late Omer and Bessie Mae Carey.

He was a farmer and a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include: his wife, Esther Frances Carey of Danville; two daughters, Seila Hanes of Danville and Eva Hensley of Harrodsburg; four brothers, William, Lewis, Robert and Thomas Carey; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Junior Carey, a brother, Donald Eugene Carey and a sister, Hazel Robins.

Service was held March 17, all at the Shawnee Run Baptist Church. Chaplin Gary Story will be officiating. Burial will be in Shawnee Run Cemetery

Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford was in charge of arrangements.
