Johnny Grace
Johnny M. Grace, 49, of Lovely, Kentucky, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 at his residence.

Born April 12, 1953 in Lovely, he was a son of the late Curtis and Biddie Grace.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Prentice Eldon Grace.

Johnny was a retired coal miner and member of the Warfield Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Patty Jane Grace of Lovely; a son, Morrison Stepp Jr. of Inez, Kentucky; daughters Karen R. Cornette of Tomahawk, Kentucky, Michelle E. Grace and Tiffany L. Grace, both of Lovely; brothers George Grace of Naugatuck, Ara Joe Russell Grace of Warfield, Kentucky, and Danny Ray Grace of Inez; sister Songie Lea Pollard of West Jefferson, N.C.; and grandchildren Austin C. Stepp and Abbigayle C. Stepp.

Visitation began after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Warfield Church of God.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at the church with minister Kenny Gore officiating.

Burial will follow in the family cemetery.

Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home of Inez, Kentucky, is in charge of arrangements.

Lora Johnson
Lora Rose Johnson, 70, of Lowmansville, Kentucky, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at her home.

Born Aug. 23, 1932 in Mingo County, she was a daughter of the late James and Florence Rose.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Johnson.

Lora was a housewife and member of the Vineyard Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters Darrell Fay Maynard of Lowmansville, Kentucky, and Sharon Kay Mills of Tomahawk, Kentucky; one granddaughter; four grandsons; 5 great-grandchildren; and sisters Lucy Newsome of Kermit, Ora Wright of Chesterville, Ohio, Mildred Simpkins of Jackson, Ohio, and Georgia Brewer of Kermit.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez (Kentucky) Chapel, with Doc Maynard, Terry Conley and Jamie Thornsberry officiating.

Burial will follow in the Maynard cemetery, Lowmansville, Kentucky

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez Chapel.

Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home of Inez, Kentucky, is in charge of the arrangements.

Virginia Chambers
Mrs. Virginia Kathleen Chambers, age 84, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, formerly of Williamson, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at Shelbyville.

Born April 26, 1918 in Matewan, she was a daughter of the late Logan and Ada (Taylor) Compton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Chambers, and sisters Ruth Howell and June Bailey.

Mrs. Chambers was the first woman to be elected to the office of sheriff in the state of West Virginia. She served as sheriff of Mingo County from 1961 to 1964. She was the widow of Howard Chambers, who had served as sheriff of Mingo County in the 1950s. She was a graduate of Concord College where she received a teaching certificate. She taught school in Matewan and later in Williamson at Main Building Grade School. She was a member of the Norway Avenue Church of Christ in Huntington. She and her husband were guests on the television show "What's My Line?"

Survivors include two sons, Robert (Pat) Chambers of Huntington and Michael (Ruby) Chambers of Shelbyville.

In addition to her sons and daughters-in-law, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Todd (Janie) Chambers, Mark (Kim) Chambers, Beth (Jim) Galloway, Steve Chambers, Kelly (Steve) Cloyd, Kirby (Matt) Hoetker and Kara (Mike) Baker. She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren, Katie, Mandy, Michael, Zachary and Andrew Chambers, Brooke, Joseph and Annie Galloway, Maggie, Chris and Sidney Cloyd, Zane and Alex Baker.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at Weaver Mortuary with the Rev. Teddy Tackett officiating.

Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Johnie Owens will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2002 at Weaver Mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Howard Testerman
Howard Clyde Testerman, 74, of Tomahawk, Kentucky, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at St. Joe's Hospital.

He was born Aug. 4, 1928 in Martin County, Kentucky

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at Phelps and Son Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky

Visitation began Thursday after 6 p.m. and will continue until time of services on Saturday.

Pearl Harris
Pearl L. Harris, 86, of Inez, Kentucky, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002 at her residence.

Born June 7, 1916 in Lawrence County, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Patrick Henry and Mary Margerat Fraley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Harris; and two sons, Richard (Buddy) and Robert E. (Bob) Harris.

Mrs. Harris was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons R. Arlon Hardin of Portsmouth, Ohio, Elmer Harris, John Harris, Patrick Harris and Grant Harris, all of Inez, and Jim Harris of Columbus, Ohio; daughters Shirley Blackburn, Betty Day and Birdie Cassady, all of Inez, Kentucky, Nannie Mary Hatfield of Williamson and Phyllis Ann Thompson of Pataskala, Ohio; brother Ben Fraley of Portsmouth, Ohio; 52 grandchildren; over 100 great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Harris-Pack cemetery, Inez, Kentucky

Visitation began Thursday at 5 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Vicie Smith
Vicie Bostic Smith, 82, of Huddy, Kentucky, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

Born March 17, 1920 in Kimper, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Bostic and Anne Varney Bostic Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Smith, who passed away on May 7, 1988; daughter Annie Smith Williams; granddaughter Jennifer Smith; brother Edward Bostic; and sisters Effie Bostic and Roxie Rutherford Zornes.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a cook for Pearl's Restaurant in Williamson for many years. She was a member of the Belfry Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Ireland (Sharon) Smith of Toler, Kentucky; two grandsons whom she adopted, Meral Dean (Cricket) Williams of Huddy, Kentucky, and Ireland Lee (Sabrina) Williams of Louisa, Kentucky; brothers Carl Bostic and Jimmy Lee Smith, both of Huddy; sisters Hattie Hensley and Alice McCown, both of Huddy; one grandchild, Robyn (Chad) Williamson of Charleston; great granddaughters Amanda, Whitney and Shelbi Jane Williams, Heather Williams and Hannah Williamson; and great grandsons Brandon Williams and James Ireland Williamson.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 at Rogers Funeral Home with Buddy Kendrick officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the funeral home with special services each night at 7 p.m.

Nellie Chapman
Nellie E. Chapman, 74, of Stone, Kentucky, died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002 at Pikeville Methodist Hospital in Pikeville, Kentucky

Born Oct. 1, 1927 in Pike County, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Laura Doyle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Woodrow Chapman; son Marion Chapman; brother William Doyle; granddaughter Holly Chapman; and great grandson Tyler Coleman.

Nellie was retired from Food City, South Williamson, Kentucky, and was a member of the McVeigh United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include six sons, James C. (Shirley) Chapman of Huddy, Kentucky, Bruce E. (Irene) Chapman of Belfry, Kentucky, Freddie S. (Sherri) Chapman of McVeigh, Kentucky, Richard H. (Cindy) Chapman of Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Johnny C. (Sharon) Chapman of Sidney, Kentucky, and Leslie Dwayne (Venita) Chapman of Borderland; seven daughters, Patsy Coleman of Sidney, Kentucky, Judy Ann (Michael) Newton of Columbus, Ohio, Emma Coleman of Stone, Kentucky, Vicky Lynn Childers of Canada, Kentucky, Laura Etta (Donald) Hall of Jonancy, Kentucky, Jackaline Chapman of McVeigh, Kentucky, Samantha Newton of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Dolly York of Belfry, Kentucky, Jesse Thacker of Pikeville, Kentucky, and Mahalia Adkins of Aflex, Kentucky; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 at McVeigh United Pentecostal Church with Joe Crum officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky

Sons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at McVeigh United Pentecostal Church. Special services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. with Eric Fleming and on Thursday at 7 p.m. with McVeigh United Pentecostal Church preachers.

Lassie Hatfield
Lassie Jane Smith Hatfield, 86, of Mt. Airy, Md., formerly of Octavia Hollow, McAndrews, Kentucky, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Mt. Airy, Md.

Born Nov. 26, 1915 at Peter Creek, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Ballard and Cordellia Smith.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Hatfield; daughter Shirley Ann Hatfield; grandson Phillip Hatfield Jr.; sister Annie Martin; and five brothers, Columbus, Virgil, Sidney, Curtis and Cecil.

She was a homemaker and member of the Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Phillip (Maudie) Hatfield of Mt. Airy, Md., and Thomas Jefferson (Sandra) Hatfield Jr. of Laurel, Md.; brother Thomas Freland Smith; sister Bertha Mae Smith; five grandchildren, Sharon, Kathy, Tommy, Jeffrey and Thomas Jefferson III; seven great grandchildren, Sherry, Everett, Michael, Billy, Taylor, T.J. IV, Terrence; two great-great grandchildren, Emily and Shane.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 at R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky, with David Allen Thacker, Randall Thornsbury, Raymond Stanley, Onis Smith and Mike Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in the King cemetery at Octavia Hollow, McAndrews, Kentucky

Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with special services at 7 p.m.

J.R. Bartley Jr., 35, of Dry Fork Rd., Elkhorn City, Kentucky, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002 at Pikeville (Kentucky) Methodist Hospital.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Bailey Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Bartley cemetery, Dry Fork of Marrowbone, Kentucky

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bailey Funeral Home.

Alcus Arrant
Alcus Arrant, 82, of Ransom, Kentucky, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002.

Born April 26, 1920 in Holmes County, Fla., he was a son of the late Daniel T. and Ida (Hicks) Arrant.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Coleman Arrant; a brother, Eric (Estella) Arrant of Pensacola, Fla.; nieces Anna Devoour of Niceville, Fla., and Esther Hawkins of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Church Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky

Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at the funeral chapel.

Lawrence Blackburn
Lawrence "Dud" Blackburn, 86, of Pinsonfork, Kentucky, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at Pikeville Health Care Center, Pikeville, Kentucky

Born Nov. 30, 1915 in McAndrews, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Otis Blackburn and Louvenia May Blackburn West.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Florence May, and half brothers Clarence Blackburn and Paul West.

Lawrence was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Ina Helvy Blackburn; two half brother, Bill West and Norman West, both of Tennessee; two sisters, Audry Hensley of Louisville, Kentucky, and Dorothy Mosley of McAndrews, Kentucky; and two half sisters, Josephine Mullins of McAndrews, Kentucky, and Jeraldine Adkins of Elizabethtown, Kentucky

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at Rogers Funeral Home with Tommy Reed officiating.

Burial will follow in Charles cemetery, Raccoon, Kentucky

Johns Creek Chapter 166 DAV will have graveside services.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation began after 6 p.m. Monday with services at 7 p.m. with Tommy Reed. Visitation will resume after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rogers Funeral Home and special services will be held at 7 p.m. with Freewill Baptist ministers officiating.
