Margaret Wright Payton, 70

Margaret Wright Payton, 70, of Campbellsburg died Dec. 1, 2004, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Louisville Inpatient Unit.

She was the daughter of John T. and Fannie Willhoite Wright, a homemaker and a member of Sulphur Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Payton; and a brother.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary (John) Downey of Sulphur, Thelma (Donald) Hedden of Frankfort, Nancy Payton of Campbellsburg, Carolyn (Larry) Ramsey of Sulphur and Tammy (Richard) McCane of Goshen; two sons, Raymond T. Payton of Bedford and George W. Payton of Sulphur; five sisters, Mary Jane Riley of Campbellsburg, Ruby Crawford of Lexington, Shirley Huff of La Grange, Kathy (Edward) McIntosh of La Grange and Dorothy (Harold) Ashcraft of Smithfield; and three brothers, James F. Wright of Sulphur, Leves Wright of Pendleton and Bobby G. Wright of Lexington.

Services were Saturday at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home, with Brother Roy Lillpop, pastor of Sulphur Baptist Church, and the Rev. Nick Coleman of Sulphur officiating. Burial followed in New Castle cemetery.

Pallbearers were William Russell Payton, Mark Steven Payton, Richard Thomas Payton, Raymond Carroll Payton, Thomas Wayne Payton, William Evans Clark, John Thomas Patterson and Bryan Adam Patterson.

Memorial gifts may go to Hospice of Louisville.

Marion Alexander 'Chunk' Caywood, 93

Marion Alexander "Chunk" Caywood, 93, of Crestwood, died Dec. 12, 2004, in La Grange.

He was born Dec. 20, 1910, in Fleming County to Lucian Daniel Caywood and Mota Bell McCall.

He was a dairy farmer, a member of Ballardsville Baptist Church, Dairy Man Inc. and Kentucky Farm Bureau, a charter member of the Lions Club of Ballardsville and on the board of directors of Southern States.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, June (Rice) Caywood; a daughter, Marian June "Coozie" Husband of Crestwood; two grandchildren, Wesley Thomas Husband of La Grange and Rebecca June Husband of Crestwood; and a sister Ruby Banet of New Albany.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home in La Grange, with the Revs. Tommy Purvis and Orville Smith of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Valley of Rest cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wes Husband, Walter Husband, Marvin Carpenter Jr., Kenny Rowe, Kevin Jeffries, Ralph Williams and Bill Bauman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll Waltz, Garland Lewis, Al Klingenfus, Hubert Crum, Marvin Carpenter and Coleman Covington.

Memorial gifts may go to Ballardsville Baptist Church Life Center.

Alicia Ann Powars, 18

La Grange

Alicia Ann Powars, 18, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 in Henry County.

She was born Jan. 29, 1986 in Jefferson County to Jeffrey J. Powars and Marianna Roth Morgan.

She was a senior at Henry County High School, a former cheerleader and a waitress at Our Best restaurant.

Survivors include her mother, Marianna Roth Morgan; her father and stepmother, Jeff and Michelle Powars of Henry County; a sister, Kayla Powars of La Grange; a brother, Jeffrey W. Powars of Henry County; a step-brother, Chris Wise of Henry County; a grandmother, Peggy Roth of Louisville; and a grandfather, Bill Powars of Henry County.

Services were Feb. 6 at Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Davidson of DeHaven Memorial Baptist Church officiated with burial at Valley of Rest cemetery in La Grange.

Pallbearers were Tyler Klefot, Justin Richardson, Eric Benningfield, Chris Wise, Todd Pollard and Dusty Norton.

Memorial gifts may be made to her family.

Martha Ann Klein Davis, 78

Martha Ann Klein Davis, 78, of Prospect, died June 12, 2004, at Baptist Hosptial East.

She was a native of Jefferson County, a member of Springdale Presbyterian Church, Eastern Area Community Ministries, Louisville United Against Hunger, Older Adult Ministries, the Daylily Club and was a former 4-H leader.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray S. Davis, and a son, Charles Ray Davis.

She is survived by two sons, Ray S. (Kin) Davis Jr. and Jonathan (Nancy) Davis; four daughters, Joyce Ann (Butch) Shipley, Peggy (Paul) Townsend, Virginia Theilen and Suzanne (Tom) Portman; two brothers, William A. and Charles T. Klein; a sister, Dorothy Hammack; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday at Springdale Presbyterian Church with the Rev. J. Whit officiating. Burial followed in Floydsburg cemetery in Crestwood.

Pallbearers were Albert Klein, Robert Klein, Timothy Klein, Sturt Hammack, Glenn Hammack and Steve Hammack.

Memorial gifts may be made to Springdale Presbyterian Church Building Fund, EACM or to the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Stoess Funeral Home in Crestwood handled the arrangements.

Phyllis Fortner, 60

Phyllis J. Stivers Fortner, 60, died June 10, 2004, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville after a long illness.

She was a native of Jefferson County and a former employee of Brunswick Corporation in Eminence.

She attended Beechridge Baptist Church in Shelby County and was the daughter of the late John and Florence Craig Stivers.

She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Wayne Fortner.

Survivors include her husband, Julius Clayton Fortner of Waddy; five sons, Billy Readen of Lockport, Franklin Readen of Shelbyville, David Fortner of La Grange, Kenneth Fortner of Eminence and Michael Fortner of Waddy; two brothers, Neville Curtis Stivers of Jacksonville and William Darrell Stivers of Eminence; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Sunday at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Garry Poston of New Castle United Methodist Church.

Burial was in Pleasureville cemetery.

Pallbearers were Theodore Ashby, James Murray, Matthew Mahoney, Donald Ashby, Jody Jesse and John Stivers. Honorary pallbearers are Earl and Dale Fortner.

Jon Gudmundsson Sr., 82

Jon Sig Gudmundsson Sr., 82, of Goshen, died June 12, 2004.

He was born June 27, 1921, in Iceland and moved to Louisville in 1950. He received his United States citizenship in 1958. He was a graduate of Commercial College in Reykjavik, Iceland, and also attended Columbia University in New York.

Gudmundsson founded Northland Corporation in La Grange in 1964, and remained chairman of the board until his death.

He was the former president of Wood-Mosaic Industries and Subsidiaries, vice president and treasurer of Wood-Mosaic Corporation and co-founder and past president of the Imported Hardwood Products Association.

He was a past president of the Hardwood Lumber Distributors and Yard Association, Southern Hardwood Traffic Association and the Icelandic-American Chamber of Commerce and a past board member of the National Hardwood Lumber Association and the Canadian Lumber Association.

Gudmundsson served as a Consul of Iceland and was awarded the Order of the Falcon from the president of Iceland in 1996 for continued relations between the United States and Iceland.

He founded the Icelandic National League of the USA Inc., and served as a trustee of the American-Scandinavian Foundation.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Pendennis Club, Harmony Landing Country Club, Deerfield Country Club of Deerfield Beach, Fla., the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Filson Historical Society and the Rotary Club of La Grange, and was a 20-year member of the Oldham County Planning and Zoning Commission.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Burgess A. Davis.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, the former Sesselja Svana Eggertsdottir; his children, Orn and Susan Varga Gudmundsson, Hilda Gudmundsson Davis and Jon and Susan Swinney Gudmundsson; his grandchildren, Orn and Greta Knutson Gudmundsson, Aaron and Harper Gudmundsson Becker, Joseph and Kristine Davis Higgins, Sarah Davis, Elizabeth Gudmundsson and Jon S. Gudmundsson III; and one great-grandchild.

Services were Wednesday at Pearson Funeral Home in Louisville with a private burial in Cave Hill cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Lung Association or to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.

Jerry F. Ashley, 47

Jerry F. Ashley, 47, died Friday, July 23, 2004, in Louisville.

He was born May 24, 1957, in Jefferson County to Ernest Ashley and Betty Lou Shaefer.

He was a tool and die maker for Ford Motor Company and a member of DeHaven Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Fay Bagby Ashley; three sons, Anthony Angermeier, Jeremy Angermeier and Justin Ashley, all of Crestwood; a daughter, Tiffany Dix of Evansville; two grandchildren; his parents; grandparents, Mazie Dunn of Crestwood, Ira and Docia Payton of Valley Station; two brothers, Doug and Brian Ashley of Crestwood; and a sister, Chris Hickey.

Services were Monday at Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home. The Rev. Tony Rose of DeHaven Memorial Baptist Church officiated with burial at Louisville Memorial Gardens East.

Memorial gifts may be made to DeHaven Memorial Church Building Fund.

Donna Lee Fust, 59

Donna Lee Fust, 59, died July 19, 2004, in Louisville.

She was born June 7, 1945, in Cincinnatti, Ohio to William McDarty and Mary Francis Andes.

She was a homemaker and member of Covenant United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Chester A. Fust Jr.; a son, Chiristopher Fust of Clarksville, Ind.; a daughter, Tammy R. Fust of Louisville; her mother, Mary Francis Clausen of La Grange; and two grandchildren.

Services were Friday at Shiloh United Methodist Church. The Rev. Owen Dolin officiated wth burial at Shiloh cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Maudie May Hampton, 93

Maudie May Hampton, 93, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.

She was a native of Crestwood, a retired bookkeeper for Joe Gibson Motor Co., Citizens Fidelity Bank and Ratterman Plumbing. She was a member of the Mary Louise Williams Guild and Crestwood United Methodist Church.

Services were Thursday at Stoess Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Powell officiated with burial at Mt. Tabor cemetery in Centerfield.

Pallbearers were Bill Goodwin, Mike Byrd, Bob Stoess, Richard Beard, Billy Potts, Ed Davis and Don McCoy.

Wilma Borders Meade, 65

Wilma Borders Meade, 65, of Mt. Sterling, died Dec. 11, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 15, 1939, in Magoffin County to Manuel Borders and Goldia Montgomery Borders. She was a secretary for A.O. Smith for 35 years and a member of the Church of God.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Burton.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Meade of Mt. Sterling; a son, Darryl Anthony Meade of Mt. Sterling; a daughter, Tammy Crutcher of Oldham County; three grandchildren, Jacob Thomas, Emily Claire and Conner Crutcher of Oldham County; three sisters, Betty Gullett of Florida, Edna Johnson of Pikeville and Mary Coleman of Grove City, Ohio; and two brothers, Basil Borders of Chicago and Bascom Borders of Ocala, Fla.

Services were Tuesday at the Herald and Stewart Chapel in Mt. Sterling, with the Rev. Jeff Perkins officiating. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Park in Paintsville.

Pallbearers were Ed Pittman, Jimmy Smathers, Ernie Daulton, Billy Reed, Allen Wells and Ollie Ramey.
