Gary N. Holt

ELDORADO, Ill. -- Gary N. Holt, 54, of Eldorado died Monday, July 30, 2001, at his home. The Milliocket, Maine, native was a truck driver, military veteran and attended Miracle Temple Church in Wasson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Everly Holt, on Sept. 22, 1997; and a stepson, Gene Hooten, on Aug. 18, 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Lee Melton Holt; three sons, Robert Holt, Norman Holt, both of Owensboro, and Brian Holt of Cincinnati; a daughter, DeeAnna Hodges of Owensboro; two stepsons, Conrad McCloskey of Peyton, Colo., and Kelly Melton of Jackson, Mo.; four grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; his parents, Maurice Wayne Holt and Alta Campbell Holt, both of Dummer, N.H.; three brothers, Wayne Holt, Brian Holt, both of Dummer, and Carl Holt of Milan, N.H.; and a sister, Sherry Main of Dummer.

Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at First General Baptist Church in Owensboro. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Watson Funeral Home in Eldorado is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Southern Illinois or his wife.

Dr. John B. Moore, Jr.
(September 26, 1930 - March 8, 2013)

Dr. John Bowman Moore, Jr., 82, of Bowling Green passed away at 4:25 pm Friday, March 8, 2013 at Hospice House of Southern Kentucky. Dr. Moore was born September 26, 1930, the son of the late John B. Moore and Charlotte Coombs Moore. He attended the University of Kentucky, then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean War where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Combat "V." After recovering from injuries he attended Lincoln Chiropractic College, Indianapolis, Indiana, graduating in 1959, and then coming to Bowling Green where he practiced 42 years. He also had branch offices in Auburn and Franklin, Kentucky. He was a member of The Presbyterian Church and in his later years attended Smiths Grove Presbyterian Church, a past president of the Bowling Green Noon Lions Club and the Warren County Historical Society. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Vice President General of the Sons of the America Revolution, four state area, the Kentucky and American Chiropractic Associates, Masonic Lodge # 73, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, White Shrine, Elks Lodge # 320, American Legion Post #23, Commander, and member of American Legion Post #62, Franklin, Kentucky and former Scoutmaster Boy Scout Troop #126.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Moore of Bowling Green; a step daughter, Mary Cline and her husband Chris of Bowling Green; two step grandchildren, Andy and Randy Cline both of Bowling Green; one sister, Ann Brooks of Newport News, Virginia; numerous nieces, nephews and great- nieces and great-nephews. He was married to the late Janet L. Moore on December 21, 1957 at the Presbyterian Church in Anderson, Indiana by Rev. G.N. Taggert. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Patty M. Royster. A Celebration of Dr. Moore's life will be at 11:00 am Monday at the Smiths Grove Presbyterian Church with interment to follow in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may take the form of contributions to the Boy Scouts of America or Hospice of Southern Kentucky.

Albert John Mayer, Jr.
(March 31, 1921 - March 11, 2013)

Albert John Mayer, Jr. , 91, of Bowling Green died Monday, March 11, 2013 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Surry County, Virginia native was born March 31, 1921, a son of the late, Albert John Mayer and Thomasia Deitrick Mayer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Irene Meredith Sturdivant Mayer. Mr. Mayer was a WWII Veteran, having served in the Army Air Corps and was a member of the VFW, the Moose Lodge and St. James United Methodist Church. Survivors include one brother, Eugene Mayer and his wife, Leslie, of Bowling Green; three nieces, Andrea Denney and her husband, Greg, of Bowling Green, Leslie Holder and her husband, Rod, of Austin, TX, and Jean Fogleberg of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Visitation is scheduled from 9:00 am to 10:00 am Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Memorial Service will be at 10:00 am, Saturday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Berea Baptist Church cemetery in Rockville, VA at a later late.

Polly Elkin Newman
(July 15, 1934 - February 22, 2013)

Polly Elkin Newman, 78, of Bowling Green, passed away at her residence on Friday, February 22, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Maud Elkin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, Roscoe Elkin, Jr. and Dallas Elkin. She was a graduate of College High and Bowling Green Business University. She was a cheerleader in High School and was on the girls basketball team. Polly had been an active member of The Republican Women's Club, was a member of the Boy's and Girl's Club, and attended Trinity Christian Church and First Christian Church. Polly enjoyed playing bridge for many years and she enjoyed traveling and sightseeing with her daughter, Janet. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing tennis and bowling.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet Tajer and her husband, Hassan, of Hoover, Al; a son, David Newman and his wife, Teresa, of Bowling Green; five grandchildren, Steven Tajer of Tuscaloosa, Al, Stephanie Tajer of Hoover, Al, Erin Whitaker of Louisville, KY, Josh Newman and Will Newman both of Bowling Green; one aunt, Dorothy Cole of Bowling Green; several nieces and cousins. She will be missed by her family. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 am, Monday, February 25, 2012 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery #1. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm Sunday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and again from 8:30 am to service time on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The Boy's and Girl's Club of Bowling Green; The Salvation Army of Bowling Green or The Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Billy N. Carlisle
(May 7, 1933 - March 15, 2013)

Billy Norman Carlisle, 79, of Bowling Green died at 6:08 am, Friday, March 15, 2013 at Greenview Hospital. The Graves County, Kentucky native was born on May 7, 1933, a son of the late John L. Carlisle and Lorraine Pritchard Carlisle. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Carlisle Daugherty. He was a graduate of Symsona High School, attended Murray State University and was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. He was employed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems and attended Living Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Fairia Maxine Jones Carlisle of Bowling Green; one daughter, Jan Carlisle Byrd and her husband, Timothy of Bowling Green; one brother, Donald L. Carlisle and his wife, Carol of Mayfield, Kentucky; one granddaughter, Madeline Byrd of Bowling Green; several nieces and nephews. Graveside Services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Monday, March 18, 2013, at Fairview cemetery II. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Agnes Louise Heraldson
(December 17, 1919 - March 31, 2013)

Agnes Louise Heraldson, age 93 of Rockwall Tx, passed away March 31, 2013. She was born December 17, 1919 in Brownsville KY to Otto and Flossie (Johnson) James. Mrs. Heraldson had worked as a restaurant hostess. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a charter member of Forest Park Baptist Church in Bowling Green KY.

She is survived by her children: Billy Heraldson (Barbara) of Shepherdsville KY, and Barbara Robinson (Ray) of Rockwall TX; grandchildren: RaeShel Hollcroft (Doug), Shane Robinson, Jackie Heraldson (Stacey) and Chris Heraldson; seven great grandchildren, Garrett Hollcrost, Shelby Hollcrost, Shelby Heraldson, Chelsea Heraldson, Rachel Heraldson, Tyler Heraldson, Merrisa Heraldson; one great-great granddaughter, Cadi Heraldson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: Harry Paul Heraldson, sisters: Frances Miles, Jean Belflowers, Kay Grace and Opal Philpott; brothers, Collie, Coolidge and Shirley James. Visitation will be from 12-2pm CST followed by a memorial service at 2pm CST on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home. Burial immediately following at Fairview cemetery. James C. Powers

ROCKPORT, Ind. -- James C. Powers, 72, of Rockport died Sunday, May 20, 2001, of natural causes at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Hawesville native was a truck driver, a member of Good Old Boy's Sunday school class and Wing Avenue Baptist Church in Owensboro. He was a member of American Legion Post 254, React, Emergency Management, coordinator for weather spotters and an armed forces veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Freda Powers; a son, Gary L. Anders of Chrisney, Ind.; two daughters, Darlene Dugger of Rockport, Ind., and Vickie Lewellyn of Grandview, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial will be in Cloverport cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Doris Deweese Hargis
November 4, 1930 - April 10, 2013

Doris Deweese Hargis 82, of Bowling Green, died at 4:46am, Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at The Medical Center. Mrs. Hargis was born November 4, 1930 in the Little Bend Community in Butler County, KY. She was a daughter of the late Clarence B. Deweese and Edith Johnson Deweese and was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin E. Hargis, and a brother, Jerry P Deweese. Mrs. Hargis was an employee of Cutler Hammer, a homemaker and was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Suzanne Garrity and her husband, Stephan of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Marilyn Guy of Bowling Green, and Cindy Whittaker and her husband, Bob of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren, Laura Garrity Bratcher, Jennifer Garrity O'Connell and her husband, Dan of Canton, Georgia, Stephanie Garrity Masco and her husband, Mark of Martin, Tennessee, Katie Garrity of Greenville, North Carolina, Ashli Ezell of Gainesville, Florida, Bradley Whittaker of Bowling Green and Dylan Guy of Bowling Green; nine great grandchildren, Brent, Seth, Jack and Rhett Bratcher all of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Madeline and Caleb O'Connell both of Canton, Georgia, Anna and William Masco both of Martin, Tennessee and Brayden Ezell of Gainesville, Florida; one brother, Larry Deweese and his wife, Barbara of Germantown, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Carole Deweese of Middletown, Kentucky; one aunt and several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive. Karen Sue Montgomery
January 14, 1953 - March 28, 2013

Karen Sue Montgomery, 60, of Bowling Green died Thursday, March 28, 2013 at her residence. The Flint, MI native was born January 14, 1953, a daughter of the late Walter and Jewel Hensley Hager. Mrs. Montgomery attended Flint Central High School in Flint, MI, worked with General Motors Assembly and was a follower of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Leo Montgomery of Bowling Green; one son, Shane Montgomery of Bowling Green; five brothers, Gerry Hager and Ron Hager both of Flint, MI, Brian Hager and Tony Hager both of Prestonsburg, KY and Terry Hager of Martin, KY; one sister, Brenda Rohrer of Pikeville, KY.

TUCKER, Ga. -- Janet Pirkle Sims, 57, of Tucker, formerly of Owensboro, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001. The Cleveland native was a member of Century Christian Church and actively supported Youth Tennis Tournaments in Kentucky and her children's activities at Apollo High School in Owensboro.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn Sims; a son, Paul Scott Pirkle III of Warner Robins, Ga.; a daughter, Miriam Paige Peterson of Rockwall, Texas; four grandchildren; her mother, Miriam Allen of Sun City, Ariz.; two brothers, Ken Allen of Houston and Gary Allen of Waterloo, Iowa; and a sister, Debbie Renneker of San Antonio.

James Thomas Pearson
September 11, 1944 - March 23, 2013

James Thomas Pearson, 68 of Roundhill, KY died Saturday, March 23, 2013 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Choudrant, LA native was born September 11, 1944, a son of the late James Edward and Lizzie Mae Hammonds Pearson. Mr. Pearson was an Army Veteran and was a welder for General Motors. Survivors include his wife, Edna Watson Pearson of Round Hill; one daughter, Tammy Pearson of Austin, TX; two sons, David Watson of West Monroe, LA and Cliff Pearson of Round Hill; two sisters, Jessie Wheat and Gloria Ward; and one grandson, Cory Watson. HARTFORD -- Mildred Eva Hinton Smiley, 77, of Hartford died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Ohio County Hospital. The Ohio County native was a homemaker and attended Hartford Second Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam B. Smiley in 1993; and a son, Vernon Smiley, in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Norris Smiley and Marvin Smiley, both of Hartford; two daughters, Connie Herode of Hartford and Delona Fulkerson of Beaver Dam; two stepsons, A.J. Smiley of Utica and Seldon Smiley of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Barbara Lee Kirby, 64, of Rockfield died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Vanderbilt Medical Center. She was born September 30, 1948 and was the daughter of the late Oakley and Dorothy Tabor Hinton. Mrs. Kirby was a member of Rockfield United Methodist Church. She had retired from Warren Central High School as a Guidance Secretary. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Steve Kirby; One son, Kyle Kirby and his wife Amie who are expecting a child in August; One daughter, Ashley Nickerson and her husband Kirk; One brother, Steve Hinton and his wife Ruth Ann; One niece, Cindy Schindler and her family; and several cousins. Arnold Gregory Taylor
July 23, 1921 - March 12, 2013

Arnold Gregory Taylor , 91, of Bowling Green passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Greenwood Nursing and Rehab in Bowling Green. The Scuffletown (Henderson County), Kentucky native was born July 23, 1921, a son of the late Lee A. Taylor and Charlotte Marie Gregory Taylor. Mr. Taylor received his undergraduate degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He earned a master’s degree in education and Rank I from Western Kentucky University. He was a Henderson County farmer, engineer with Whirlpool Corporation, a science teacher at Bowling Green High School and founder of Arnold Taylor Tax Service. A gardener through his 90th summer, Mr. Taylor also enjoyed woodworking and genealogy. Mr. Taylor especially loved working with young people and was a Scout Master for seven years, taking his scout troop to Philmont Scout Ranch in 1970 and continuing as a council leader for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sara Downing Taylor; one son, Greg Taylor and his wife Laura; one daughter, Susan Taylor and her husband Andy Loving; six grandchildren, Jeremiah, Ingrid, Max, Micah, Sara Burton, and Walker; one great grandchild, Bentley. James D. Howell
(November 15, 1943 - November 23, 2015)

U.S. Veteran
James D. Howell, 72, of Bowling Green died on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Hospice House. The Warren County native was born on November 15, 1943 to the late Exie and Bernice Dockery Howell. He is also preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Chandler; two sisters, Wanda Davis and Ramona Barger; and three brothers, Jerry, Charles Dean, and Danny Rae Curran.

Mr. Howell was a retired tool and die maker for Cutler Hammer for 34 years, and was employed at Bada-Hennessy. He was a member at Delafield Church of Christ, and served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. He was an avid fisherman, Nascar fan, and KY Wildcat fan.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rebecca (Becky) Howell; three daughters, Sherry Trent (Chuck), Lynn Chandler (Doug) from Cox’s Creek, KY, and Wendy Howell; four grandchildren, Brittany Moore, Lacey Trent, Bethany Hahn, and Chelsea Chandler; four great-grandchildren, Colton and Brooke Moore, Caden Trent, and Addison Keeling; a brother, Teddy Curran; a sister, Amie Woulfe; a step-brother, Ray Curran; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial to follow at Bowling Green Gardens. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with additional visitation time on Wednesday at 9:00 AM until service time at 1:00 PM.

Joe Tanner
1 June 2001

Joe Tanner, 66, of 1721 Mohawk Drive, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Owensboro native retired from State Farm Insurance after 31 years of service as an agent. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church. He was past board chairman and current treasurer of Wendell Foster Center, where he had been a board member for 42 years.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Pat Tanner; a son, Mike Tanner of Lexington; a daughter, Marsha Strein of Lexington; four grandchildren; and his mother, Dorothy Miller of Owensboro.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Catholic Church in Owensboro. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Edwina T. Boucher
(Died October 25, 2015)

Edwina T. Boucher, 84, of Bowling Green died on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at The Medical Center. The Bowling Green native was the daughter of the late Edwin Roberts and Cullie B. Tanksley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Russell Boucher and a half-brother, Howard Sublett.

She was formerly a member of Rockfield Homemakers and Letter Carriers Auxiliary. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, John Mark Boucher (Tiffany) of Cedar Park, TX; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Jones (Kevin) of Bowling Green; and four grandchildren, Katlynd Elizabeth Troutt, Kinlie Ann Troutt, Keely Faith Boucher, and Chance Oryan Boucher.

The funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial to follow at Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 27, 2015 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.

Sam Hinson
(March 22, 1941 - September 17, 2015)

Sam Hinson, 74, of Cadiz, Kentucky passed away Thursday, September 17, 2015, at Signature Healthcare of Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Mr. Hinson was born on March 22, 1941, son of the late Virgie “Gracie” Hutchison Hinson and Virgil “Cotton” Hinson. Mr. Hinson was preceded in death by his wife, Diana Stice Hinson; sister, Myrt Hinson Atwood; and brother, Dempsey Hinson. Mr. Hinson was a graduate of University of Kentucky where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree. He is a retired Civil Engineer from the State of Kentucky, Department of Transportation. He served in the United States Army.

Mr. Hinson is survived by his two sons, Tim Hinson and his wife Beverly of Sonora, Kentucky; Chris Hinson and his wife Lisa of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Grandchildren, Thomas and Tito Hinson; Nephew, Barry Thurman and family; Niece, Misty Thurman Yewell and family. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 20, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., as well as Monday, September 21, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Johnson-Vaughn- Phelps Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Fairview cemetery at 1:00 p.m.

Martha Lynne Truitt
(October 31, 1947 - October 3, 2015)

Martha Lynne Truitt, 67, of Bowling Green died on October 3, 2015 at her residence. Ms. Truitt was the daughter of the late J. Frank Truitt and Gladys Noland Truitt.

Martha was a long-time and very active member of Rockfield United Methodist Church. She wrote the church newsletter, was membership Chairwoman and did “whatever else needed to be done.” She was a volunteer with the church’s local mission ministry. Martha touched the lives of many throughout her life.

She was a graduate of Warren County High School. She also was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and taught in the Warren County school system for several years. For the last 35 years, she was the office manager for Tarter Reality and Auction Company.

Ms. Truitt is survived by her sister, Anne Truitt Smith (Larry). Her niece, Shannon Keating (David). Nephew, Matthew Smith (Shea) and seven great nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Ms. Truitt will be Friday, October 9, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, October 10, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Funeral Services for Ms. Truitt will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy may take the form of contributions to Rockfield United Methodist Church.

Ray C. Huff

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Ray C. Huff, 76, of Lafayette, formerly of Owensboro, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. The Rantoul, Ill., native retired from Consolidated Industries as a setup man in 1988 and had worked for 28 years at Dynamic Corp. in Montmorenci, where he was a foreman. He was a member of Southern Missionary Baptist Church for more than 40 years, a member of Griffith Masonic Lodge 735 Free & Accepted Masons and enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Mary Lee Edmonds Huff; a son, David Huff of Monticello, Ind.; two daughters, Rhonda Bryant of Danville, Ill., and Cheryl Nevrkla of West Lafayette; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Altha Flatter of Schererville, Ind.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Richards-Loy & Wheeler Funeral Home in Lafayette, and after 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Heart Association, American Kidney Association or American Cancer Society.

Helen L. Almond
(July 11, 1919 - October 16, 2015)

Helen L. Almond, died October 16, 2015 at Greenview Regional Hospital. Mrs. Almond, a Missouri native, was born July 11, 1919, the daughter of the late Foster F. and Myrtle G. Mesmer and of LaBelle, MO. She was an active member and State Street United Methodist Church, The U.M.W. and the Dorothy Hill Circle. She was a member of the Bowling Green Garden Club, the Current Events Literary Club, the American Rose Society and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed reading, gardening and travel. She and her husband, V. Leroy, spent retirement years gardening and growing roses. They later became interested in Rose Shows, becoming judges and consulting rosarians. They enjoyed sharing roses with friends and their church. A private burial will be held at a later date. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, V. Leroy Almond, Jr. and a sister, Betty Jones. Survivors include a niece, Cheryl Cooper and her husband, Tom, of Findlay, Ohio; a great niece, Kelly Koons and her husband, Bill and children, Savannah, Olivia, and Seth of Bowling Green, KY; a great nephew, Aaron Cooper of Findlay, Ohio.
