Robert Gutfreund, 73, of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired manager with Cincinnati Bell Telephone, and an active member of BeCon.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Gutfreund; daughters, Janice Gutfreund of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Nancy Williams of Farmington Hills, Mich.; a son, Mark Gutfreund of Paducah; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to BeCon, 714 Washington Ave., Covington, Ky., 41011, or in the form of Masses at St. Henry Church.

Zelma Taylor Hartford, 75, of Newington, Ga., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah, Ga. She was a retired legal secretary.

Survivors include sons, George H. Hartford of Newington, and Paul W. Lowe of Ludlow; sisters, Mary Alice Creech of Florence and Marie Speakes of Covington; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Services and burial were Thursday in Savannah. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling local arrangements.

Harold Edward Smith, 81, of Mt. Olivet, died Thursday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. He was a retired Columbia Gas Co. employee and a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. He was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a lay minister with the church.

Keith Smith of Atlanta, Herman Smith of Baltimore and Garry Smith of Franklin County; a daughter, Oneida Cooper of Mays Lick; a sister, Chloe Polly of Lackey, Ky.; five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mt. Olivet, and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church.

Florence Marie Wright, 83, of Alexandria, died at 10:05 a.m. Thursday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas Nursing Home in Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Her husband, Richard Wright, died in 1976.

Survivors include a brother, George Kool of Alexandria.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Martha Todd Roberts, historian

Martha Todd Roberts was able to trace her roots to the beginnings of American colonial history and even to the royalty of Europe.

A widely recognized authority on genealogy, Mrs. Roberts, of Newport, died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. She was 86.

"History was her main thing," said a friend, Annette Kiel of Ft. Thomas. "Anybody who wanted to find out anything could contact Martha and she would refer them to the right place."

Mrs. Roberts was a retired employee of the Cincinnati Art Museum and a member of Highland United Methodist Church of Ft. Thomas.

She served as president general of the Order of the Crown in America, whose members can trace their family histories to European royalty. During her 23-year tenure, it funded the restoration and preservation of records from the colonial period of American history.

She was a past regent of Rebecca Bryan Boone chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, a Daughter of Colonial Wars of Kentucky and a member of Daughters of Famous Patriots of America. Mrs. Roberts helped create a DAR shrine in Paris, Ky. She was a member of National Gavel Society and the Historical Board of the Duncan Tavern in Paris.

Mrs. Roberts also was the first president of the Holly Hill Guild Protestant Children's Home. And she was a member of Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century. For her service, the College of William and Mary established a rare book fund in her honor.

"She was a very dynamic, lovely person and a stickler for the rules, and doing everything just right," Mrs. Kiel said. "She was very much admired." Mrs. Robert's husband, Richard Roberts, died in 1972.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Harry Roberts of Warsaw.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Warsaw Cemetery. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Restoration Fund of the Order of the Crown in America, in care of Henry Clay Russell, 118 Clinton Drive, Ashland, Ky. 41101, or the Martha T. Roberts Rare Book Fund at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.

James B. Adams, 71, of Florence, died Wednesday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Garnett Baker, 68, of Williamstown, died at 6:37 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Ralph M. Brashear, 81, of Florence, died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Nursing Home, Cincinnati. He was a retired truck mechanic with United Parcel Service, Cincinnati, and a member of Christ Chapel, Erlanger. He also was a member of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union Local No. 804, Cincinnati, and Seniors of Newport.

Survivors include his wife, Margie J. Brashear; sons, Bob Brashear of Florence, Fred Brashear of Bowling Green and Jack Brashear of Covington; a daughter, Marilyn Parrett of Burlington; brothers, E. C. Brashear of Amelia, Ohio, Billy Brashear and Ben Brashear, both of Hamilton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials: Children's Hospital, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

William Randolph Court, 73, of Highland Heights, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in Florence Park Care Center in Florence. He was a retired electrical engineer with General Electric in Cincinnati, Florence, S.C., and Schenectady, N.Y. He was a member of Newport Elks and ELFON Society with General Electric. His wife, Eulalia "Eukie" Bernardo Court, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Paula Court of New York City, Donna Biller of Quincy, Mass., Carla Court of Cincinnati, Laura Court of Malta, N.Y., and Linda Salisbury of Ann Arbor, Mich.; sons, Bruce Court of St. Louis, William J. Court of Ft. Thomas, John Court of Littleton, Mass., Brian Court of Schenectady, N.Y., and Charles Court of Bethlehem, Pa.; sisters, Joan Binder of Batavia, Ohio, Theresa Wagner of Cincinnati and Susan Court of Alexandria; a brother, Paul Court of Cincinnati; and 13 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials: St. Louis Belle Center.

Christena Bay Courts, 96, of Butler, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Methodist Church. She also was a charter member of Johnsville Homemakers. Her husband, Ray Courts, died in 1975.

Survivors include sons, Baxter Courts of Foster, Roger Courts of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Douglas Courts of Fruitland Park, Fla.; a daughter, Jennie Lou McGee of Germantown; a brother, Charles Bay of Butler; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery. Memorials: the church or cemetery.

Charles Putnam DeVore, 86, of Lakeside Park, died at 3:02 a.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Manor, Covington. He was a retired editor with the advertising department of Cincinnati Milacron and an apartment rental agent.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Ward DeVore; daughters, Mary Ann Jefferies of Florence and Patricia Erpenbeck of Edgewood; six grandchildren and eight great-grand children.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. N. Susan Garland, 71, of Florence, died at 4:14 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Christian Church. Her husband, Virgil Jerome Garland, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Garland of Erlanger; brothers, John Walkup and Bill Walkup, both of Meadow Ridge, W.Va.; sisters, Glenna Rollins of Charleston, W.Va., and Mary Lee Gendelman of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.

Letha M. Grabow, 82, of Covington, died Tuesday at her home. She was a retired cashier and a member of Elsmere Church of Christ. Her husband, Bernard Grabow, died in 1981.

Survivors include her sons, Bernie Grabow of Cincinnati, Ken Grabow and Frank Grabow, both of Florence; daughters, Darlene Gross of Elsmere and Judy Lang of Ft. Wright; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Jesse Leroy Hall, 85, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired self-employed mechanic and owner of Hall's Garage, Lenoxburg.

Survivors include his wife, Virgie Hedges Hall; sons, Ronald Hall of Battle Creek, Mich., and Mark Hall of Brooksville; brother, Hadley Hall of Lakeland, Fla., and Paul Hall of Foster; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Geneva A. Miller, 80, of Highland Heights, died at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. She was a member of Traveling Seniors and Self Help of Bellevue. Her husband, John I. Miller, died in 1976.

Billy Lee Ray, 61, of Covington, died at 1:38 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a disabled grocery store manager.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce L. Survivors include his wife, Mattie Roberts; a son, James Roberts of Richwood; a daughter, Tanya Roberts of Newport; stepdaughters, Patricia Headen and Peggy Lane, both of Covington, Ethel Miles of Erlanger and Constance Collins of Cincinnati; a stepson, Emanuel Lane Jr. of Newport; brothers, Grafftin Roberts of Florence and Bornell Roberts of Louisville; 23 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Corinthian Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
