Mary E. Brooks, 74, of 1980 Harry Smith Apartments, died at 12:32 p.m., Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Bon Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born March 23, 1930, in Livermore and was a homemaker. She was a member of New Cypress Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Flo Mendez, Jimmy Emery, Loretta Emery, Edwin Emery and Mary Brooks; and a stepson, Jimmy Joe Brooks, who died July 18, 2004.

Survivors include her husband of eight years, James E. Brooks of Owensboro; a stepson, Roger Dale Brooks Sr. of Owensboro; three stepdaughters, Theresa Clark of Marion and Darlene Webb and Sandi Brooks, both of Owensboro; seven stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; five brothers, Clarence Emery of New York, Charles Emery of Wisconsin, Billy Emery of Virginia, Roger Emery and David Palmer of Indiana; three sisters, Elizabeth Rees of Owensboro, Nancy Quinn of California and Eva Brent of Kentucky; and a niece.

Memorial services are at 4 p.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Groscurth Cron

BOWLING GREEN - Dorothy Groscurth Cron, 93, of Bowling Green died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at her residence. The Daviess County native was a homemaker and member of Owensboro Christian Church and Disciples of Christ and was a graduate of Owensboro High School. She was the daughter of the late Carl Conrad Groscurth and Fannie Belle Dutton Groscurth. She was the wife of the late Albert E. Cron.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, with interment in Fairview cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today, July 29, and from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Cron and wife, Nancy, of Rockfield, Robert Cron and wife, Gayle, of Berea and Albert E. Cron II and wife, Linda, of Bowling Green; a daughter, Julia Ruth Cron Swenk and husband, Harold, of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Michael L. Stone

FARGO, N.D. - Dr. Michael L. Stone, 51, of Fargo died Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Ohio. Michael was born on July 10, 1952, in Covington to Robert L. "Stoney" and Mary "Bobbye" Stone. He married Wendy Hendrickson on Aug. 3, 1996; together they have five children and one grandchild.

Upon his graduation from Newport (Ky.) Catholic High School in 1970, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War as a medic stationed in Korea.

Michael was discharged in 1972. He then attended Thomas Moore College in Kentucky. He completed his residency in Worthington, Minn. In 1982, he opened his private practice in Moorhead, Minn., and in 1988 he joined the staff of Meritcare Medical Group in Fargo.

He served in various positions including: President of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners and the North Dakota Board of Podiatric Examiners. He studied in Russia and Switzerland with the AO Group, learning the Ilizarov Method for trauma cases. Michael was certified in the treatment of chronic wounds and co-founder of the Meritcare Wound Clinic. His most recent training was with The Delin Institutes for Peripheral Nerve Surgery.

Michael was a man of diversity. He enjoyed many cultures and had friends worldwide. His interests were: Medicine, education, power lifting, music, street rods and motorcycles. His interest in custom rods and motorcycles was evident when he became part owner of Aurora Rods and Customs, Inc. and Aurora Custom Choppers, Inc. of Moorhead, Minn.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, Brittany, Megan and Sarah of Fargo; sons, Luke (Erica) of Devils Lake, N.D., and Andy (Courtney) Hendrickson of Grand Forks, N.D.; a grandson, Kolby of Fargo; his mother, Mary (Bobbye) Stone of Fort Thomas; a sister, Robin (John) Lowe of Loveland, Ohio; and brothers, John (Brenda) Stone of Alexandria and Joe (Pam) Stone of Fort Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert "Stoney" Stone; and a brother, Danny Stone.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at Hope Lutheran Church South Campus, Fargo. There will be a memorial service at Fort Thomas at a later date. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Charles Franklin Jollay

Charles Franklin Jollay, 59, of Owensboro died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born June 2, 1945, in McLean County to Harold E. Jollay and Mary Pauline May and retired as a thoroughbred trainer and horse trainer. He was a dairyman, a member of New Macedonia General Baptist Church and enjoyed drag racing. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Eugene Jollay, in 1996; and his mother, Mary Pauline (May) Basinger, in 1989.

Survivors include four great-nieces; a great-nephew; two nieces, Robin Dowell of Owensboro and Shannon Blincoe of Lexington; two nephews, Brian Short and Eric Short, both of Calhoun; a brother, Larry Dale and Linda Jollay of Owensboro; and a sister, Regenia Ann and Ken Short of Calhoun.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brushy Fork cemetery. The Rev. Arnold Roberts will officiate.

Grace Marie Massey Baughn

Grace Marie Massey Baughn, 90, of Owensboro, formerly of Hartford, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born March 3, 1914, in Morgantown to the late Gerald Roscoe Massey and Prudie Gentry Massey. She was the retired owner of Baughn's Grocery in Hartford and former manager of Imperial Motel in Owensboro. She was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church in Owensboro since 1966 and a member of Elizabeth Munday Senior Center for more than 12 years. She grew up in Matanzas in Ohio County and enjoyed watching sports, especially basketball. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oda E. Baughn, on July 1, 1966; and a son, Kenneth L. Baughn, on Dec. 17, 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Ruth Baughn Milligan and her husband, Dane, of Hartford; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Baughn and her husband, Steve Thompson, of Owensboro; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Massey of Florida; two sisters, Corrine Starr of Sebring, Fla., and Mitt Tiller of Louisville; five grandchildren, Brian Milligan, Cynthia Fields, Marjorie Lellie, Greg Baughn and Kim Newcom; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday, July 23, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 22, and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Mike Rust, assisted by the Rev. Tony St. Clair, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford.

Herman Joseph Schell

Herman Joseph Schell, 72, of 3033 Redford Drive, Owensboro, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson. He was born in Daviess County and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Booster Club at Owensboro Catholic High School and a longtime member of the church cooking team. He enjoyed gardening, raising sunflowers and NASCAR racing. He was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Thomas, on June 17, 2004; and a stepgrandson, Calvin Whaley, in 2001.

Surviving is his wife of 35 years, Dorothy Galloway Newton Schell; a daughter and her husband, Donna and Jon Blossom of Clarkesville, Tenn.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Wilhelmina Newton and Tony Hamilton of Philpot and Phylis and Eddie Ragland of Phoenix; a stepson, James David Newton of Louisville; a sister, Mildred Phillips of Flaherty; three brothers, Bob Schell of Owensboro, Gene Schell of Panther and Jim Schell of Maceo; six stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Blessed Mother Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Glenn Funeral Home, where prayers will be said. Memorial contributions may be made to Daviess County Special Olympics, P.O. Box 764, Owensboro, KY 42302.

Carolyn S. Embry

Carolyn S. Embry, 55, of 2622 East Yellowstone, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at University of Louisville Hospital. She was born June 12, 1949, in Daviess County to Tommy Nesmith and Dorothy Lucille Robinson Nesmith and was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed playing bingo and traveling. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Nesmith.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Jerry W. Embry Sr.; a son, Jerry W. Embry Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Tell City, Ind.; a daughter, Christie Brooks of Evansville; grandchildren, David and Sarah Embry; her mother-in-law, Dorothy Embry of Owensboro; a sister-in-law and her husband, Bill and Alice Holinde of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at noon Friday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Dr. Angus McKinley will officiate.

Corene Basham Trail

BEAVER DAM - Corene Basham Trail, 78, of Pensacola, Fla., died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Pensacola. She was born to Simon and Bessie Basham in Beaver Dam where she spent most of her life, having lived in northwest Florida for 26 years. She was a member of Brownsville Baptist Church in Pensacola. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elijah O. Trail; and a son, Randall "Buddy" Trail, who died in the Vietnam War.

Survivors include a son, Larry R. and wife, Sherry, Trail of Pace, Fla.; a brother, William A. Basham of Indiana; a sister, Margaret Renfrow of Portersville, Calif.; two grandchildren, Terena Parrish of Pace and Thomas R. Trail of Cantonment, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren, Terran Parrish of Milton, Fla., and Kristina Trail, Stephen Trail and Ryan Trail, all of Cantonment.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, and from 9 a.m. to services Wednesday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Brownsville Baptist Church, 2601 Strong St., Pensacola, FL 32505. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Robert Dale Poole

Robert Dale Poole, 58, of 2287 Wilson Lane, Masonville, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at his residence. He was born Nov. 11, 1945, to Robert and Ruth Stinnett Poole in Daviess County. He was a carpenter, an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Baptist faith. Dale enjoyed fishing, NASCAR and watching University of Kentucky basketball with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sheree Poole; two sons, Billy Dale and his wife, Kristi Poole of Owensboro, and Shane Poole of Nashville; one daughter, Shawna Poole of Owensboro; two stepsons and their wives, David and JoAnna Payne and Chad and Misty Payne, all of Whitesville; nine grandchildren; his mother, Ruth Livers of Masonville; three brothers, Jimmy and his wife Sharlene Poole of Spottsville, Mike and his wife Alice Wells of Owensboro, and Louis Livers of Masonville; two sisters, Connie Hall of Spottsville and Wanda Craig of Masonville; one aunt, Mae Iverson of Hawthorne, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home with burial at Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Military honors will be given by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696 at the cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dale Poole Memorial Fund, c/o Sheree Poole, 2287 Wilson Lane, Utica, KY 42376.

Bettie Jean Sharp

Bettie Jean Sharp, 70, of 2920 Yale Place, Owensboro, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Beaver Dam Health Care Manor. She was born Nov. 3, 1933, in Daviess County to the late Dessha Sharp and Katie Sharp. She worked at American Tobacco Co. in Owensboro and was a member of Seven Hills Baptist Church in Owensboro and Chapter No. 253 Stanley Order of the Eastern Star in Stanley. She was a former member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alida (Mackie) Bartlett.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Joines and son-in-law Lloyd Joines, both of Hartford; a grandson, Dallas Joines of Hartford; a stepson, Steve Joines and his wife, Abby, of Owensboro; a stepgreat-grandson, Carson Joines of Owensboro; a brother, Edgar Sharp of Glenville; a sister, Beulah Mae Cooper of Monticello; and five nephews, Dale Bartlett, Mike Sharp, Ronnie Sharp, Jackie Sharp and Charles Cooper.

Services are at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
