Dorothy Moseley Bowman Ely

Dorothy Moseley Bowman Ely, 77, of 4222 Edgewood Court, Owensboro, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at home after a brief illness. She was born June 4, 1927, in Daviess County to the late Harry and Sallie (Walters) Moseley. She was a member of First Christian Church and the Friendship Sunday school class for 55 years. She served as a deacon for many years and as an elder since 1987. She also served as chairman of the board. She retired as plant controller from Fleischmann Distilling in 1987 after 27 years of service. She was treasurer of Masonville Fire Department for 28 years and served on the board for six additional years. She was salutatorian of her 1945 graduating class of Daviess County High School. She was a graduate of Owensboro Business College and attended Brescia College. She was selected as state 4-H food preparation champion in 1945. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 53 years, Charles J. Bowman on Aug. 15, 2000; a brother, J.D. Moseley; and a son-in-law, Robert E. Haynes.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Gilbert N. Ely; three daughters, Sarah and husband, Gary Hayden, and Carol Haynes, all of Owensboro, and Bernie and husband, Jim McRae, of Henderson; a "special daughter," Dianne and husband, Bob Ross, of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren, Tina and husband, Russell Baker, Dana and husband, Brad Stanley, Julie and husband, Jeff Goddard, and Joe and wife, Danya Haynes, all of Owensboro, Chelsea and husband, Tony Alexander, and Meagan Phillips, all of Henderson, Martha Ann and husband, Wayne Campbell, Sheila and husband, Buddy Cavanaugh, and Carol and husband, Kirt Williams, all of Hopkinsville; 13 and 1/2 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack and wife, Virginia Moseley, of Owensboro.

Dorothy enjoyed her church activities, reading, gardening, traveling, playing cards and spending time at Kamptown in Cadiz, where she had many friends. But, most of all, she enjoyed every minute she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was devoted to them and they to her. She leaves behind several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, with burial in Rosehill cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 26, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to First Christian Church, 700 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, KY 42301.

George Bernard Miles Sr.

George Bernard Miles Sr., 84, of 3238 E. 10th St., Owensboro, died at 9:20 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born June 4, 1920, in Knottsville to William Ivo Miles and Katie Dell Mattingly Miles and retired as a self-employed restaurant owner and caterer who owned George's Diner. He retired as a salesman after 17 years at Sears, Roebuck & Co. and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and past president of TPA. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and raising pure breed animals. He had a love of cooking and reading. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, Willie Ray, Earnest and Virgil Miles; two sisters, Katie Lou Bivins and Myrtle Geary; and a grandson, Kevin Michael Miles.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Anna Louise Miles; a son, George B. Miles Jr. of Owensboro; six daughters, Brenda Thompson and her husband, Joseph, of Lexington, Martha Jennings and her husband, David L., of Whitesville, Georgia Dell Miles of Owensboro, Suzanne Gomez and her husband, Richard, of Atlanta, Katie Royalty and her husband, Ronnie, of Stanley and Christie Bender and her husband, Jim, of Philpot; 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at noon Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery with full military honors conducted by VFW Post No. 696. The Rev. Richard Meredith will officiate. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Association.

Ronald Wayne Millard

CENTRAL CITY -- Ronald Wayne Millard, 53, of 2109 Jackson St., Paducah, formerly of Central City, died at 2:20 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah. He was born Sept. 11, 1951, in Muhlenberg County and was a boilermaker and member of Mount Zion Church in Paducah. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Knight, in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Clark Millard of Paducah; four daughters, Brook LeAnn Lambert of Central City, Heather Harris of Madisonville and Tracy Knight and Stacey Gibson, both of Beaver Dam; six grandchildren; her parents, James E. and Joyce Devine of Central City; and a brother, James M. "Butch" Devine of Central City.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City, with the Rev. C.W. Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Boilermaker rites will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles Eldon 'Charlie' Smith

HENDERSON -- Charles Eldon "Charlie" Smith, 73, of Henderson died at 11 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at his home. Mr. Smith was a member of Immanuel Baptist Temple, a Korean War veteran and one of 17 survivors to walk off Pork Chop Hill. He was a retired oil field worker and a retired state tollbooth operator. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Elaine Mitchell Smith, in 2002; and his son, Anthony Baldwin, in 1973.

Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Falloway of Owensboro; two sons, Mitch Smith and Stacy Smith, both of Henderson; a sister, Helen Harper of Henderson; a brother, Ted Smith of Fairborn, Ohio; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at Tapp Funeral Home in Henderson, with Brother Jerry Pearcy officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 26, and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Heart Association or to Boy Scouts of America. Full military rites will be conducted by the American Legion, Worsham Post No. 40.

Rufus Glenn Stanley

GREENVILLE -- Rufus Glenn Stanley, 49, of 12516 Kentucky 175 South, Greenville, died suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at 1:58 p.m. in Crittenden County Hospital in Marion of a heart attack. He was born Oct. 10, 1955, in Muhlenberg County, the son of William Rufus Stanley and Barbara Jean Mayes Stanley. He was a meat councilor for Food Giant Corp. for 33 years. He was preceded in death by his father, William Rufus Stanley, in 1977.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. from Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, by the Rev. Tom Stovall. Burial will be in Yeargins Chapel cemetery in Graham.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Jean Mayes Stanley of Greenville; two sons, Donavin (Brittany) Stanley and Scott Stanley, both of Greenville; a daughter, Amy Stanley of Barbaton, Ohio; a grandchild, Brayden Stanley; a brother, William Thomas Stanley of Greenville; and eight sisters, Brenda Jackson of Louisville, Beatrice Cornette of Murray, Brooksie Dukes of Greenville, Mary Jeanetta Kelly of Greenville, Connie Marie Slaughters of Clarksville, Tenn., Cindy Elain Polson of Grand Prairie, Texas, Angel Darlene Taylor of Hazel and Lisa Gail Willis of Columbia.

Friends may call Saturday, Nov. 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Hazel Tyson Winters

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- Hazel Tyson Winters, 86, of Clifton Park died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at The Harbor at Clifton Park. Hazel was born in the Pleasant Hill community in Muhlenberg County. She was the daughter of the late Bert and Margery (Green) Tyson. Hazel was a graduate of Graham High School and a member of First Baptist Church of Central City. After her marriage, she and her family lived in various locations throughout the United States prior to returning to live in Central City from 1958 to 2003. She continued to enjoy traveling all of her life. In 2003, she moved to Clifton Park to be near her son and his family. She loved to watch the birds, squirrels and chipmunks at the bird feeders outside the windows, and she especially enjoyed the beautiful fall colors this year.

Hazel cared for her family and raised her son with all the love a wife and mother can give. She was married to Clarence Winters until his death in 1986. Surviving are her son, Ron and his wife, Gail, and their son, Ethan, all of Clifton Park; her sister, Audrey Ocheltree of Chula Vista, Calif.; her brother, Juel Tyson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Winters family has appreciated the sensitive care and friendship given to Hazel and the kindness extended to her family by the staff at The Harbor at Clifton Park, and by the staff and volunteers of The Community Hospice of Saratoga. Hazel considered the staff at The Harbor to be part of her extended family. In return, they have the memory of her charming manners and her positive outlook on life.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Central City. Visitation is at 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet, Ave., Albany, NY 12206 or to The Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Velva Jean Harder

FORDSVILLE -- Velva Jean Harder, 69, of Fordsville died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. She was born in Breckinridge County and was a homemaker and a member of Fordsville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Jean Harder, in 1966.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Harder of Fordsville; a son, Douglas Harder and wife, Lori, of Fordsville; and four grandchildren, Robbie Harder and wife, Eve, Sarah Hedges and husband, Matt, all of Owensboro, and Riley Hinton and James Harder, both of Fordsville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fordsville Baptist Church, with burial in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

J.C. Howard

IRVINGTON -- J.C. Howard, 67, of Irvington died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at his home. He retired as a concrete contractor.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Caringer; two daughters, Tammie Nix and Kristy Caringer; a brother, Freeman Howard; and three sisters, Juanita West, Deloris Blakeman and Imojene Norris.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Freedom cemetery near Harned. Visitation: From 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

James E. 'Jim' Wilcox

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. -- James E. "Jim" Wilcox, 81, of Huntingburg died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at St. Joseph Hospital. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Cypress Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Wilcox; two sons, Mark Wilcox and Randy Wilcox, both of Huntingburg; two daughters, Katherine Miller and Shelly Jones; two sisters, Nellie Wilcox and Alice Wilcox; and two brothers, Bill Wilcox and Jack Wilcox.

Services: 2 p.m. EST Saturday at Fuller Funeral Home and Crematory in Dale, Ind. Burial: Fairmont cemetery in Huntingburg. Visitation: From 3 to 8 p.m. EST Friday at the funeral home.
