Teen-ager Jennifer Rene Woodford left legacy of care for cancer patients

As 13-year-old Jennifer Rene Woodford was dying of cancer, she was thinking of other children with a similar fate.

Jennifer, a student at Highlands Middle School in Ft. Thomas, donated her toys, videotapes and games to the cancer patients at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.

"She was a very giving child," said Lisa Richter Beck, director of home care and hospice at Children's Hospital. "It gives me the chills to think what she would have been like as an adult."

Jennifer died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at her home of salivary gland cancer, a rare disease that was diagnosed about three years ago.

"She refused to die," said her mother, Kathy Woodford of Ft. Thomas. "She loved life so much."

Jennifer enjoyed soccer, reading, and arts and crafts. In her last months, she made a pillow, sewing squares that described her feelings. "Sad," "love struck," "happy" and "confused." were among them.

Jennifer also kept a journal.

"She really utilized her time to the fullest and she taught us a lot about life," Ms. Beck said.

The StarShine Hospice program at Children's Hospital allowed Jennifer to live in Ft. Thomas with her mother and also spend time in Springboro, Ohio, with her father, Terry Woodford.

Mrs. Woodford praised the year-old program, which gave her medical training to assist her daughter and provided the equipment and nursing support to keep Jennifer as comfortable as possible at home.

Jennifer could not eat since December and was fed intravenously. The employees' association at the General Electric plant in Evendale, Ohio, provided a grant that paid for a massage therapist to reduce her pain.

"They were overwhelming with their care," her mother said of the hospice program.

Through the program, Jennifer was able to have many of her wishes fulfilled. She received tickets to the "Phantom of the Opera," went to the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens' Festival of Lights, got a telephone call from her idol, Jonathan Taylor Thomas of the television show, "Home Improvement," and, with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, traveled to Disney World with her mother.

"She had a lot of unfinished business she wanted to complete," Ms. Beck said.

"She was a very insightful child. She was obviously apprehensive about her ultimate prognosis, but she moved through the transition from life to death with her eyes wide open."

Other survivors include a brother, Sean Woodford of Ft. Thomas; maternal grandfather, Jacob Mercz of Chicago; and paternal grandparents, Delores and David Woodford of Lillian, Ala.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Highland Hills Baptist Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to Memorial Trust Fund for Jennifer Woodford, in care of Star Bank.
