CLEATON -- Johnie Pinkey Smith, 93, of Cleaton died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. The Beech Creek native was an Army veteran of World War II and had retired from Sharon Coal Co. as a coal miner. He was preceded in death by a son, Sherman Earl Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Smith; two sons, Jerry Smith of Central City and Jewel Ray Smith of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Gloria Bratcher of Greenville, Beverly Smith of Cleaton and Alesia Webber of Owensville, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace McClure of South Carrollton; and a stepsister, Genon Bratcher of Drakesboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg. Burial will be in New Hebron cemetery in Muhlenberg County. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Christopher Lynn Boling

PLEASANT RIDGE -- Christopher Lynn Boling, 38, of Pleasant Ridge died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was a Daviess County native.

Survivors include his mother, Linda Powell of Pleasant Ridge; grandparents, Ruby and J.L. McKinley and Hazel and Virgil Boling, all of Pleasant Ridge; and a half brother, Franklin D. Powell II of Pleasant Ridge.

Services are at 5 p.m. Saturday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Christopher Lynn Boling Memorial.

Dencil Lee Boggess

ELEANOR, W.Va. -- Dencil Lee Boggess, 68, of Eleanor died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston, W.Va. He retired from Republic Container and was an Army veteran and a Christian. He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Wayne Boggess and Larry James Boggess; and a daughter, Mary Jean Boggess.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Lee Meadows Boggess; a son, Rick Boggess of Owensboro; three grandsons; his mother, Gay Boggess of Hometown, W.Va.; a brother, Glenn Boggess of Hometown; four sisters, Sissy Anderson and Anna Null, both of Hometown, Sue Buck of Columbus, Ohio, and Diane Mellert of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; and a half brother, Ray Sayre of Hometown.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gatens Funeral Home in Poca, W.Va. Burial will be in Grandview cemetery in Red House, W.Va. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Lions Club or Franklin L. Hoffmafter Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o West Virginia School of the Blind Alumni Association, Laura Hoffmafter, treasurer, 261 N. Antigo Place, Romney, WV 26757.

Clarence E. 'Mickey' Hall
13 July 2001

Clarence E. "Mickey" Hall, 65, of 3832 Kipling Drive, Owensboro, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at his son's home in Whitesville. The Ohio County native retired as a millwright from Local Union 1080 and was a member of National Drag Racers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Brown Hall; a son, Mark Hall of Philpot; two daughters, Patti Andriakos of Owensboro and Tracey Glasscock of Leitchfield; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Ethel Elizabeth Hedden

FORDSVILLE -- Ethel Elizabeth Hedden, 82, of Fordsville died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Fordsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The Fordsville native was a housewife and member of Fordsville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, William "Bill" Hedden; and a daughter, Debbie Hedden.

Survivors include her husband, Lewis Hedden; three sons, George "Pat" Hedden and Larry Hedden, both of Reynolds Station, and Harold Thomas Hedden of Fordsville; two daughters, Betty Blanton of Fordsville and Faye Merritt of Reynolds Station; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fordsville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fordsville cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville.

Kathleen Purvis
13 July 2001

Kathleen Purvis, 94, of Hermitage Manor in Owensboro died there Thursday, July 12, 2001. The Logan County native was a member of United Methodist Temple in Russellville. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Douglas Purvis.

Survivors include a son, James Douglas Purvis Jr. of Littleton, Colo.; two daughters, Jo Ann Waltrip of Owensboro and Joyce Everett of Louisville; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. in Russellville. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Russellville. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to United Memorial Temple in Russellville.

Charles E. 'Chuck' Sandefur
13 July 2001

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Charles E. "Chuck" Sandefur, 64, of Fort Pierce, formerly of Hammond, Ind., and Sebree, died there Sunday, July 8, 2001, from cancer. The Sebree native retired as owner of Sandefur Transport in Gary, Ind.

Survivors include his companion, Barbara Sandefur; two sons, Charles L. Sandefur of Griffith, Ind., and Brian Sandefur of Knoxville, Tenn.; five daughters, Audrey Gunnum of Hebron, Ind., and Debra Thornton and Laura Wheeler, both of Fort Pierce, Leisa Decker of St. John, Ind., and Ashley Sandefur of Whiting, Ind.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Curtis Sandefur and Wayne Sandefur, both of Hammond, Ind., and Don Sandefur of Greenville; and a sister, Norma Jean Dickinson of Madisonville, Tenn.

Services are at 11 a.m. today at Tompkins Funeral Home, Hanson chapel in Slaughters. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery in Sebree. Visitation is after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to a local Hospice organization.

Lou Nell Alexander

Lou Nell Alexander, 51, of 818 Jackson St., Owensboro, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Riverside Manor Nursing Home in Calhoun. The Owensboro native was a member of 10th Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include her companion, Carlene Crite Sr. of Owensboro; a daughter, Clara Louise Crite of Owensboro; her mother, Clara Mae Alexander of Owensboro; two brothers, Donnie Alexander and Randall Alexander, both of Owensboro; a sister, Shirlene Simmons of Owensboro; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 1:30 p.m. Friday at 10th Street Baptist Church in Owensboro. Burial will be in Iron Ore Hill cemetery in Daviess County. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to 10th Street Baptist Church Soup Kitchen.

Charlie Ewen Clark Jr.
12 July 2001

WHEATCROFT -- Charlie Ewen Clark Jr., 76, of Wheatcroft died there Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at his niece's home from cancer. He was a Union Steward and a 53-year member and past master of Wheatcroft Masonic Lodge 881 Free and Accepted Masons. He was elder and treasurer of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and an Army veteran of the European theater of World War II.

Survivors include three brothers, William "Waldie" Clark of Clay, Wendell Clark of Wheatcroft and Freddie Clark of Dixon; a sister, Hilda Beckner of Wheatcroft; a niece, Sherree Mantooth of Owensboro; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Wheatcroft. Burial will be in Oddfellows cemetery in Clay. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Vanover Funeral Home in Clay and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Masonic services are at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Anthony's Hospice of Dixon or Cumberland Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Joseph 'Jay' C. Foreman
1 August 2001

REYNOLDS STATION -- The Rev. Joseph "Jay" C. Foreman, 71, of Reynolds Station died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Ohio County native was a bi-vocational minister and the first pastor of Hatfield (Ind.) Baptist Church. He served churches in Webster, Warren, Ohio, Hancock, Breckinridge and Daviess counties. He was a mechanic, worked for many years at Tichenor in Hartford and was a Korean War veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Donna Jeanne Foreman; a son, Stephen Foreman of Jeffersontown; a daughter, Terrie Foreman of Lewisport; and three grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Baptist Church in Reynolds Station. Burial will be in Fordsville cemetery. Visitation is after 1 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Kentucky Baptist Childrens Home.

Merle L. Madole
12 July 2001

WICKLIFFE -- Merle L. Madole, 85, of Wickliffe died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. The Ballard County native retired from IBM in New York as a computer programmer after 30 years and was a member of Barlow United Methodist Church. She earned a graduate degree in business from New York University, worked at the dean's office at Berea College and taught high school for a year.

Survivors include a brother, James F. Madole of Owensboro; two nephews; and several cousins.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home chapel in Barlow. Interment will be in Wickliffe cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
