Nelda Ruth Mefford James

GREENVILLE - Nelda Ruth Mefford James, 76, formerly of Greenville, died Sept. 6, 2004, at 11:35 a.m. in Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green. She was born Feb. 8, 1928, in Beech Creek, the daughter of Raymond Mefford and Dulcie Grubb Mefford. She was a graduate of George Peabody College of Education in Nashville. She received her masters and Rank 1 as an elementary school teacher. She was a member of KEA, NEA, the Kentucky Retired Teachers and the Greenville Education Association. She was a member of Beech Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ray James; and a brother, Billy Grubb Mefford.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. from Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be held in Muhlenberg County Memorial Gardens in Powderly.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Judy (Jim) Soderling of Central City and Gail (Doug) Overby of Florence, Ala.; three brothers, C.W. Mefford of Drakesboro, Durwood Mefford of Owensboro and David H. Mefford of Bowling Green; four stepgrandchildren; nine nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends may call today, Sept. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy should go to the Nelda Mefford James Memorial Scholarship Fund at College Heights Foundation at Western Kentucky University.

Alva Jr. Cottrell

BEECHMONT - Alva Jr. Cottrell, 67, of P.O. 294, Beechmont, died at 4:13 a.m., Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 23, 1936, in Muhlenberg County and was a retired barber and member of Mud River Union General Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lavena of Beechmont; a son, Tony (Teresa) Cottrell of Morgantown; two daughters, Regina (Mike) Martin of Morgantown and Dana (Richie) Pentecost of Browder; five grandchildren, Claire, Jacob and Shelbi Ruth Martin and Torie and Dustyn Pentecost; and three sisters, Virginia Cook of Newburgh, Ind., Earlene Downing of Louisville and Elva Schroader of Greenville.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mud River Union General Baptist Church, with Hobart Eaton officiating and Gerald Beliles and Brian Haire assisting. Burial will be in Mud River Union cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home.

Douglas Junior Wiles

CLOVERPORT - Douglas Junior Wiles, 77, of Cloverport died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Oakwood Health Campus in Tell City, Ind. He retired as owner-operator of Wiles Hardware Store in Cloverport and was a member of Cloverport United Methodist Church and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Wiles; and two sons, Michael Douglas Wiles and Larry Wayne Wiles.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at Wallace Funeral Home in Cloverport. Burial: Cloverport cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mary Gerldine Stanley

GREENVILLE - Mary Gerldine Stanley, 68, of Greenville died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Ann Stanley; three brothers, Glenn Stanley, Owen Ray Stanley and Marty Lynn Stanley; and three sisters, Charlotte Ann Lear, Gloria Stamps and Dorothy Jean Johnson.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Visitation: From 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Martha Amy Putman

Martha Amy Putman, 88, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born July 6, 1916, in Christian County, the daughter of George and Oma Putman. She was retired from Christian County School District, where she was a dedicated teacher for 50 years. She began teaching in 1936 in one-room schoolhouses in the White Plains community and retired in 1986 from Lacy School in Christian County. She was a lifelong member of Mount Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in White Plains. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Oma Putman; and a sister, Gennie Putman.

Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held at Mount Carmel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in White Plains Friday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. John Shoulta. Burial will take place beside her beloved family in Concord cemetery in White Plains.

While there are no immediate survivors, her passing is mourned by several cousins, including Anita (Rodney) Crick; hundreds of grateful students; her church family; her "special" family, Phil and Claudette (Cannon) Taylor and children; her caretakers; and many friends.

Friends may call Thursday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville and Friday after 10 a.m. at the church.

James D. 'Don' Kittinger

TULSA, Okla. - James D. "Don" Kittinger, 69, of Tulsa, formerly of Ocean Springs, Miss., and a native of Owensboro, passed from this life to the next Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Tulsa. He was born March 10, 1935, in Owensboro and retired as a major from the Air Force. He was a Vietnam War veteran and a member of Cedar Lake Christian Assembly in Biloxi, Miss., and Open Bible Fellowship in Tulsa. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, being with his family and grandchildren, being with his church family and flying. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Carmen Oelze Kittinger.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years of marriage and his high school sweetheart, Lee Ann (Grant) Kittinger; three sons, William Cecil Kittinger of Inverness, Fla., and Greg Kittinger and his wife, Sandy, and Danny Kittinger and his wife, Carrie, both of Tulsa; a daughter, Cindy Berg and her husband, Brian, of Calhan, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Rackleman of Melbourne, Fla.

Memorial services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at Floral Haven Chapel in Tulsa. Burial will be in Floral Haven cemetery in Tulsa. The family wishes expressions of sympathy to take the form of donations to Clarehouse, 7324 E. 49th Place, No. 3, Tulsa, OK 74145.

The Rev. Wayne H. Hemphill

The Rev. Wayne H. Hemphill, 91, of 1714 Antler Ave., Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Leisure Years Nursing Home. Born June 13, 1913, in Tryon, Okla., he was the son of the late Leroy and Daisy Turner Hemphill. He was a member of Good Shepherd Church. He was a graduate of Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo. He pastored at First Assembly of God in Henderson for 18 years and at First Assembly of God in Raceland for 15 years. He served as district secretary/treasurer and assistant superintendent of the Assemblies of God and as general presbyter of the General Council of the Assemblies of God in Springfield. He was a World War II Army veteran. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and watching the Braves and Cardinals baseball games. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Thelma Tolin Hemphill; four brothers, Oscar, Carrol, Bob and Jim; and two sisters, Sylvia and Laura.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Jim Morris; a granddaughter and her husband, Stephanie and Quincy Moorman; three grandsons, Josh and wife, Kista, Cumpton and Dustin and Jon Morris, a great-granddaughter, Mia Moorman; a great-grandson, Max Moorman; two sisters, Retta Gross of Tyron and Betty Hall of Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Walter, and his wife, Bobbi, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Hemphill of Okmulgee, Okla.; three nephews, Kenny Cross of Bartlesville, Okla., Don Hemphill of Palm Desert, Calif., and Ron Hemphill of Okmulgee; and a niece, Joy Poietevent of Fort Gibson, Okla.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Good Shepherd Church with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Good Shepherd Building Fund.

HARNED - Roy Ferry, 78, of Harned died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Breckinridge Health Care.

Survivors include three brothers, Foy Ferry, Joe Ferry and Leonard Ferry; and two sisters, Vitula Bradley and Dora Ann Wright.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial: McDaniels cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Roy Ferry Memorial Fund, c/o Trent-Dowell Funeral Home.

Mary Lucille Brant

Mary Lucille Brant, 74, of Whitesville died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, the church altar society and Young at Heart club. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. She retired as manager of St. Mary and Trinity School cafeteria.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, William H. "Bud" Brant; a son, Jerry and Rhonda Brant of Whitesville; five daughters, Donna and Victor Wiles of Woodruff, S.C., Judy and Kenny Smeathers of Philpot, Peggy and Jamie Clark, Yvonne and Barry Morris and Janice and Lon Clark, all of Whitesville; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Tony Mills of Knottsville; and five sisters, Josie McBride and Bonnie Hudson, both of Owensboro, Bernadine Payne and Betty Beavin, both of Whitesville, and Carolyn Howard of Philpot.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Thursday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Burial will be in St. Marys cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Mary's Building Fund.

James Alan Adams

James Alan Adams, 42, of 1627 W. 12th St., Owensboro, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at the home of his mother in Owensboro. He was born on Sept. 7, 1961, in Chicago. He had been employed as a welder. He was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Donald Adams, in 1998.

Survivors include his mother, Jenell Cofield Cecil of Owensboro; two daughters, Kyla Brooke Adams and Tara Dean Adams, both of Owensboro; a son, Dakota Adams of Owensboro; a sister, Sandra Higdon; two brothers, Robert Wood and Jason Adams, all of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 8, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marvin E. Kirkendoll

LEESBURG, Fla. - Mr. Marvin E. Kirkendoll, 67, of Leesburg died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004. He was born Aug. 29, 1937, in Owensboro and retired from employment with the city of Owensboro. Mr. Kirkendoll served in the U.S. Army and was an Army reservist for six years. He was a coach and active with Little League baseball for more than 15 years.

Mr. Kirkendoll is survived by his wife, Jean; a daughter, Krystal Kirkendoll of Long Beach, Calif.; and five nephews who reside in Owensboro. All Faiths Cremation Society in Lady Lake, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
