BEAVER DAM - Dewey "Pete" Phelps, 63, of 288 Highview Lane, Beaver Dam, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Jan. 18, 1942, in Hartford to the late Loddie W. Phelps and Daisey Mae Phelps and retired from American Nonwovens Corp. in Beaver Dam. He was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Peabody Coal Co., Austin Surface Mines. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Shelia Jean Fulton Phelps of Beaver Dam; a son, Shawn Edward Phelps of Beaver Dam; and five sisters, Jewel Johnson and Wilma Crump, both of Hartford, Iva Toca and Vivian Brown, both of Beaver Dam, and Palma Wyandt of Genoa, Ohio.

Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home, with Brother Greg Hillard and Brother Glenn Armstrong officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, March 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunnyside cemetery in Beaver Dam, with military honors. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Heart Association, 333 Guthrie St., Louisville, KY 40202 or American Diabetes Association, 2207 E. Morgan Ave., Suite H., Evansville, IN 47711.

Brenda Kay Gaston Douglas

CENTRAL CITY - Brenda Kay Gaston Douglas, 62, of Central City died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Heartland Regional Hospital in Marion, Ill. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna McMahon and Dena Patterson; and two sisters, Alice Baldridge and Robbin Gaston.

Graveside services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fairmount cemetery in Central City. Tucker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert W. 'Speedy' Hester

Gilbert W. "Speedy" Hester, 76, of 1266 Fogle Road, Owensboro, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on March 28, 1929, in Daviess County to Eli Hester and Maggie Howard. He retired from Owensboro Milling Co. and Miles Agri-Trucking as a truck driver. He was an Army veteran, a member of Stanley Baptist Church and song leader at Stanley Baptist and Griffith Baptist churches for more than 30 years. He was the former caretaker at Scherer cemetery. His hobbies included gardening and yard work and reading. He was a Dallas Cowboys, UK basketball and Atlanta Braves fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Maggie Howard Hester; three sisters, Amelia Basket, Mary Frances Howard and Joyce Wedding; and a brother, James Eli Hester.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jeanette Lively Hester; a son, Scott and his wife, Becky Hester of Owensboro; two daughters, Cindy and her husband, Mike Young, and Pam and her husband, Philip Freels, all of Owensboro; five grandchildren, Kristie Freels, Tiffany and Brittany Young and David and James Hester; a brother, the Rev. Robert "Bob" and his wife, Mary Hester, of Owensboro; two sisters, Margaret Justus and Ann and her husband, John Quinn, all of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Scherer cemetery. The Rev. Pete Taylor will officiate. Lottie Cox

Lottie Cox, 88, of 2630 Lancaster Ave., Owensboro, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Butler County to George Milligan Johnson and Pearl Mae Coleman and was a homemaker. She was a member of Garden Green Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, crocheting and her dog, Misty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odie Cox, in 1984; a grandson, Carmen Ray Cox, in 1960; a great-grandson, Jacob Anthony Izsak, in 1999; and a daughter-in-law, Jean Cox, in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Essie Cox and daughter-in-law, Betty, and Jimmy B. Cox Sr., all of Owensboro; a daughter, Winnie Mae Cardwell and son-in-law Rayburn of Morgantown; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in South Hampton Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Milton Hadden and the Rev. Jimmy Cox Jr. will officiate. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Garden Green Baptist Church Building Fund, 419 N. Ewing Road, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Martha P. Smith

HARDINSBURG - Martha P. Smith, 76, of Cloverport died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility.

Survivors include four sons, William B. Smith Jr., Steve Smith, Joseph T. Smith and Roy Lee Smith; and two daughters, Joy Phillips and Debbie Brown.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial: McQuady cemetery. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Breckinridge Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility.

Kenneth C. 'Ken' Foley
03/28/2005

Kenneth C. "Ken" Foley, 80, died at 7:26 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2005, at Gibson General Hospital. He was born June 9, 1924, in Oakland City, Ind. He retired as vice president of Ohio Valley Container, was founder and co-owner of Industrial Woodcraft and was also a real estate agent. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Patoka United Methodist Church. He was a member of VFW No. 1147, a past master of Prince Lodge No. 231 F&AM, a past worthy patron of Golden Fleece Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Conservation Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Henrietta L. (Claybaugh) Foley; his wife, Hazel (Louise) Foley, in 1998; and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a son, Michael and (Nancy) Foley of Princeton, Ind.; four daughters, Judith and (Richard) Noffsinger of Bremen, Cheryl and (Charles) Hunt of Princeton, Carol and (James) Jaeger of Hutsonville, Ill., and Lisa and (Glen) Thompson of Winslow, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Estella Herman of Houston, Marjorie Evans of Evansville, Betty Speedy of Fort Branch, Ind., and Juanita Utley of Tomball, Texas.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Colvin Funeral Home, with the Rev. Greg Davis officiating. Burial will be in Columbia (White Church) cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

LIVERMORE - Jennifer P. Nichols, 23, of Livermore died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at University of Louisville Hospital. She worked at the Subway restaurant in Livermore.

Survivors include her fiancé, Carl Ile; her mother, Jeana Britton; her father, Randy Crosby; and a sister, Miranda Crosby.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel. Burial: Oak Hill cemetery in Livermore. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. James E. Faulkner

DUNDEE - James E. Faulkner, 52, of 2928 Denton Slack Road, Dundee, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Sept. 6, 1952, in Ohio County to William E. Faulkner and Reba Luttrell Faulkner. He was a retired farm manager for H.B. Stanley Inc. in Beaver Dam and a member of Cedar Grove General Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Faulkner, on March 9, 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Jill Faulkner of Dundee; a son, Jason Faulkner and his wife, Shenna, of Grandview, Ind.; two granddaughters, Linndsey and Hunter Faulkner, both of Grandview; five sisters, Anita Plummer of Fort Worth, Texas, Judy White of Atlanta, Mary Jane Nichols of Morgantown, Donna Bouvier of Owensboro and Reba Sue Edwards of Sarasota, Fla.; and his mother, Reba Faulkner of Hartford.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, with Brother Larry Embry and Mrs. Donna Bouvier officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home and after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Cedar Grove General Baptist Church cemetery in Olaton. Herman J. Sweeney

LOUISVILLE - Herman J. Sweeney, 85, of Louisville died Monday, March 28, 2005, at his home. Born in Daviess County, he was a veteran of World War II and retired from Devoe and Raynolds Paint Co., where he was employed for 37 years. He was a member of Broadway Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Collins Sweeney; two brothers, John M. and Albert Sweeney; a sister, Dorothy Willyard, all of Owensboro; a sister-in-law, Rubye (Ted) Crawford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. EST Friday at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, with burial in Cave Hill cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Louisville or his church.

Glenda Joyce Smith

CENTRAL CITY - Glenda Joyce Smith, 51, of Weiner, Ark., died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Conway (Ark.) Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Merl and Letha Smith. She was raised in Muhlenberg County but had lived in Arkansas for several years. She loved people and had many friends. Her hobby was visiting and talking with her friends.

She is survived by six siblings, Billy Smith of Eloy, Ariz., Sally Smith of Arizona City, Ariz., Paul Smith of West Manchester, Ohio, Wavy Leon Smith of Valparaiso, Ind., Wendy Sue Mayhugh of Central City and Tommy Smith of Casa Grande, Ariz. She was preceded in death by four other siblings. Joyce was the 12th child born in her family, She was very much loved and will be greatly missed.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. A family friend, the Rev. Michael Foster, will be conducting the service. Burial will follow in the Smith Family cemetery in Paradise. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. this evening and after 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Ruth Russell King
03/29/2005

LOUSIVLLE - Ruth Russell King, 83, of Louisville died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Pine Tree Villa in Louisville. She was born Sept. 5, 1921, in New Waverly, Ind., to the late William Edward Russell and Grace Cecil. She retired from the Kentucky Department of Human Resources as a social worker and was a member of Hartford United Methodist Church and Hartford Woman's Club. She was a veteran of World War II where she was a WAC sergeant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Clifton King on Aug. 17, 1968.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene Clifton King Jr. of Chile and William David King of Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter, Suzanne King Grubbs of Anchorage, Ky.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Edward Russell of Russellville and Elwood Russell of New Philadelphia, Ohio; and two sisters, Lois Wilkins and Joyce Morgan, both of Russellville.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home with the Rev. Sandy Douglas officiating. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until funeral time Wednesday. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
