Mary M. Wing, 93, ran Wings Deli until this year

For 62 years, Mary M. Wing ran her own delicatessen in Dayton.

Only an illness earlier this year forced Mrs. Wing, 93, to give up the business, Wings Deli, that had been a family tradition.

"She was so healthy until this year. The store gave her a reason to get up every day. People came in to talk to her," said a granddaughter, Mary Bishop of Ft. Thomas.

Mrs. Wing, of Dayton, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. Her husband, Jerry Wing, died in 1960.

The deli at Fifth and Main streets remains in the family, but no decision has been made on whether to keep it open, Ms. Bishop said.

The store was a favorite hangout for neighborhood children. Ms. Bishop recalls many generations of her family helping out at the deli.

It survived floods during the 1930s and competition from larger markets. Ms. Bishop said her grandmother's cheerful manner attracted many people.
