Sister Edward Sandhegar, teacher

Sister Edward Sandhegar taught her elementary school charges more than the alphabet, mathematics and how to read. She also taught them how to live.

"She made a large number of friends, both among the teachers, her students and the parents of the students," said Sister Andrea Collopy, a longtime colleague. "They maintained a wonderful relationship with her over the years."

Sister Edward's kindness and enthusiasm were returned to her many times over the years, Sister Andrea said.

For example, Sister Edward was a huge fan of the Cincinnati Reds. When Sister Edward turned 80, the other sisters arranged for her to throw out the first ball at a Reds game.

Many friends of Sister Edward sent her tickets to the game, which she shared with her fellow sisters.

"She was such an active person. She had been active all her life," Sister Andrea said.

Sister Edward, O.S.B., 88, of St. Walburg Monastery in Villa Hills, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was a retired teacher with the Diocese of Covington.

She taught at Holy Cross, St. Anthony School in Forest Hills, St. Benedict, St. Paul School in Florence, Mary Queen of Heaven, St. James School in Brooksville, St. Francis Xavier in Falmouth, Mother of Good Counsel and Blessed Sacrament schools.

Sister Edward was close to her family, Sister Andrea said. One nephew visited recently and took Sister Edward to Indianapolis and other areas to visit family, Sister Andrea said.

Although her health has been declining, Sister Edward took part in many religious services, Sister Andrea said.

"She had a fine sense of humor and was devoted to her family," Sister Andrea said.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 5 p.m. Friday at St. Walburg Monastery Chapel. A vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel. Burial will be in St. Walburg Cemetery.
