Jack Hein, aided thousands via work at St. Vincent dePaul

When the flood of 1997 ripped through Falmouth and left hundreds of people homeless, John Joseph "Jack" Hein initiated a food distribution center that funneled donations from charities to flood victims.

Using the warehouses, trucks and manpower of the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Northern Kentucky, over which he served as vice president of the District Council, Mr. Hein helped set up the infrastructure that was needed in Falmouth for agencies to provide relief.

The Elsmere resident personally helped move people out of their flooded-out homes and into temporary housing, moved furniture, bought supplies and did many of the other tasks to help flood victims recover.

"Many times, people think something like a flood is something that lasts a couple of weeks and then you go home. But Jack always said a flood destroys everything. People have to start over. It's a long-term problem, not a short-term one," said a brother, Dr. Gerald F. Hein of Cincinnati.

"He just had an obsession with helping the underdog. He was always there to help."

Mr. Hein, 48, died of cancer at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday at his home.

He was a graduate of Thomas More College and started Jack Hein Nationwide Insurance Agency in Erlanger in 1985.

An active member of the Erlanger Lions Club, he served as director, vice president and president. During his tenure, he opened membership to women.

"He joined the Lions Club thinking it was a social activity, and it turned out to be an opportunity to help the community," Gerald Hein said.

"He was always finding people to help. They just came to him like a magnet."

Such was the case when he was asked to volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He saw in the organization a charity that needed help, and quickly became intimately involved in its management. He soon became vice president of St. Vincent DePaul's District Council, overseeing warehouse operations and six thrift stores.

"At a time when the economy wasn't doing all that well, people needed help with their utility payments or house payments or needed furniture, and he just found ways of getting all that done," his brother said.

A graduate of Covington Catholic High School, Mr. Hein was born and raised in Ludlow. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War from 1970 to 1976. In 1979, he married. He and his wife had two children.

Mr. Hein also was a member of St. Henry Church in Elsmere and Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus in Ludlow.
