Announced on: 02-26-1999

Steven Work, battled leukemia

Steven Douglas Work of Falmouth was a boy when he learned he had leukemia. Through six years of treatments, hopes and relapses, he became a man to be proud of, said his mother, Delores Shelton Work. He died Thursday at 19 at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati.

'I know what being brave is like now,' said Mrs. Work.

Steven was in the eighth grade, a sports-loving kid, when he started getting headaches. It was 1993. Tests showed leukemia, and he started a series of treatments that would leave him too fragile to go to high school. By his junior year he had improved enough to rejoin his classmates.

'We thought we had it beat,' Mrs. Work said.

He graduated with his class, married Sara Elizabeth Whitehead and started college at Maysville Community College.

'He loved to write. He wanted to be an English teacher,' his mother said.

Last year his daughter, Alexis Danielle Work, was born. But Steven's health started to fail again. He had a bone marrow transplant last year. In January, he relapsed.

In addition to his wife, daughter and mother, survivors include his father, Steven Joe Work; a brother, Allen Joseph Work of Falmouth; a sister, Amber Dawn Work; and grandparents, James and Georgia Work, all of Falmouth.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, with visitation from 11 a.m. Burial will be in New Vine Run Cemetery, Grant County.
