EDGAR GREEN

Edgar L. Green, 79, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday at his residence after a long illness.

Born in Illinois, he was the son of the late John Lee and Mable Christman Green and widower of Jewell Cummins Green.

He was a retired employee of the Watts and Durr Oil Company and Northpoint Training Center and a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Louise Nowlin of Harrodsburg; one step-daughter, Barbara Pinkston of Danville; one step-son, William Prewitt of Lexington; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great grandchildren and a special caregiver, Mary Hooper of Harrodsburg.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Gardner Green, two step-daughters, Betty Butler and Nancy Mayes, two sisters Edna Huckstep and Margie Farney, two brothers, Willie Green and Horrist Green and three grandchildren, Betty Ann Devine, Randall Leon Devine, and Andy Lee Devine.

The funeral was held Saturday, April 26 at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church with Bro. Larry Camic officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ricky Burns, James Tewmey, Marshall Hockersmith, Ralph Byrd, Keith Smith, and Daisey Niel.

Honorary pallbearer was Fred Purvis.

MAE HANCOCK

Mae Hancock, 79, of Stevens Lane in Eubank, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born in Rockcastle County, Kentucky on January 10, 1929, daughter of the late Ancel and Lena McKinney Reynolds.

She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Pentacostal Church.

She is survived by: two sons, Ralph Hancock, Jr. of Eubank and Troy & (Kim) Hancock of Mt. Vernon; seven daughters, Jewel Wolfe of London, Judy Hancock of Somerset, Sandy (Farrel) Blanton of Somerset, Lena Rose Dunbar of Russell Springs, Sharon (Vester) Meece of Eubank, Ruth (Eddie) Stephens of Somerset and Rita Hancock of Science Hill; one brother, Bobby Reynolds of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Peachie Reynolds of Somerset and Mazie (Russell) Poynter of Harrodsburg; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hancock, Sr., who died on June 28, 2007, one daughter who died in infancy, Vivian Ann Hancock, four brothers, Charles, Everett, R.J. and Jimmy Reynolds, one sister, Evelyn Glossie and one grandchild, Melody Vanhook.

A funeral service was held Friday, April 25, at the Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill with Bro. Ernie Wyatt officiating.

Burial was in Valley Oak Cemetery.

Morris & Hislope Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

DR. CHARLES HATCHER

Dr. Charles E. Hatcher, 80, of Harrodsburg, died Friday, April 25, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Feb. 27, 1928 in Hickory Point, TN, he was the son of the late William Dayton and Zelma Lou Johnson Hatcher and was the husband of Clarice Miniard Hatcher.

He was a retired Optometrist after 52 years, a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, director of the young married department, the Baptist Foundation, an Army Veteran, life member of the Lions Club, and received the Melvin Jones Award, Harrodsburg School Board Member for twelve years, served on Health Department Advisory Board, board of director’s of the Farmer’s National Bank, a Kentucky Colonel, life member of American Legion, Past President of the Industrial Board, the U. K. Alumni Association and the American Optometric Society.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Jean (James) Williamson of Georgetown and Claire (Ron) Pearl of Lexington; two brothers, William D. (Thelma) Hatcher Jr. of Nicholasville and Maurice (Wylene) Hatcher of Jefferson City, TN; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John L. Hatcher.

The funeral was held Monday, April 28, at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church with Dr. Robert DeFoor and Dr. Dan Frances officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dennis Ballard, Louis Kerrick, Bill Barnett, Jared Baker, Lonnie Campbell, John Trisler, John Harlow, Allen Whitenack, David Baker and Mike Matherly.

Honorary Bearers were Gene Lawson, Robert Thompson, C.L. Riley, Kenneth Kirkland, Jr. Anness, Polie Stratton, Darrell Agee, Allen Garner, Dr. Bacon Moore, Dr. Constance Huff, Janet Reed, Eileen Lester, Harrodsburg Baptist Deacons, Lions Club Members and the Glad Hand Sunday School Class.

CHARLES HATCHER

Charles Hatcher dies

Dr. Charles Hatcher, 80, longtime optometrist in Harrodsburg, died Friday at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

A native of Hickory Point, TN, Hatcher worked 52 years as an optometrist in Harrodsburg and just recently resigned as the chairman of the Mercer County Board of Health.

He was involved in the local community in a variety of ways throughout his lifetime including serving as a member and deacon at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church and in other capacities at the church.

He was a U. S. Army veteran, lifetime member of the Lions Club and the American Legion, and was a former member of the Harrodsburg School Board for 12 year. He also served on the board of directors of the Farmers national Bank, was a Kentucky Colonel, past president of the local Industrial Authority and a member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association.

“I’ve know Dr. Hatcher since I was a little boy and he lived in the neighborhood and took a sliver of steel out of my dad’s eye.” said Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler. “He was the most kind individual, a true gentleman who served his community in a number of different ways. I always felt he was very fair, had an immense sense of wisdom and gave a tremendous amount of time and effort to anything he did,” the judge said.

“He was one of the outstanding community leaders we had and had a mild, humble and compassionate way of doing things. We will miss him,” Trisler added.

Hatcher is survived by his wife, Clarice Miniard Hatcher; two daughters and other relatives.

KENNETH JACKSON

Kenneth L. Jackson, 54, husband of Clara Jackson died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Born Dec. 28, 1953 in Lexington, he was the son of Kenneth E. and Lee Ora Gibson Jackson and was the husband of Clara Jackson.

He had worked at IBM for 24 years and was the owner of Jackson Repair Shop.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Shannon Lee Jackson; one daughter-in-law, Dana Jackson of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Robin (Jimmy) Cecil and Shelly Lynn, both of Harrodsburg and several nieces, nephews and uncles and aunts.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Lee Jackson, Jr.

The funeral was held Monday, April 28, at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Ervin Esh and Enos Martin officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Brian Mangum, Logan Lynn, Ira Puckett, Scott Patton, Steve Wehunt, Mike Barnhill, Jimmy Jackson and Todd Elliott.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of the KY Trail Blazers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the KY Diabetes. Association.

DONA KENDRICK

Dona Kendrick, 61, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville.

Born April 18, 1947 in Paducah, she was the daughter of the late Andrew S. and Edna Frances Potts and was the widow of David Kendrick,.

She was a clerk for NWK Construction and a member of the Cornishville Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two daughters, Wendy (Brian) Stewart and Diana (Monte) Kelly; three sons, David Kendrick Jr., Bobby (Nickie) Kendrick and Brian (Jessica) Kendrick, all of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Thomas Potts of Harrodsburg and John Potts of Lexington and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jorg Potts and a sister, Betty Ann Potts.

The funeral was held Tuesday, April 29 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Paul Readnour and Mark King officiating. Burial was in the Elk Springs Cemetery in Monticello.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cornishville Baptist Church.

JACK NELSON

Jack Laird Nelson, 71, of Harrodsburg, died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Feb. 17, 1937 in Cook County, IL, he was the son of the late Cedric and Pearl Jauch Nelson and was the husband of Joyce Ann Collins Nelson.

He was a horse trainer, a member of the Lutheran Church and had attended the Rising Sun Christian Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Janet (John) Underwood of Burgin; one son, Jimmie (Rhonda) Nelson of Somerset; one sister, Judith Mueller of Park Ridge, IL; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The funeral was held Sunday, April 27 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Scott Bugg officiating. Burial was in the Burgin Memorial Garden.

Pallbearers were Mark Underwood, Denny Harrington, John Chapa, John Underwood, Darrell Collins and Malcolm Collins.

NORMAN SMITHART

Norman Smithart, age 63, of Scott Lane, Danville, died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at his residence.

Born Tuesday, November 28, 1944 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of the late Elmer and Katherine Phillips Samples.

Survivors include his cousins and caretakers, Mary and Greg Boswell of Danville; one uncle, Wesley Phillips of Harrodsburg; one aunt, Mary Francis Phillips of Harrodsburg; several cousins, Candice Boswell, Jean and Billy Boswell of Danville, Sarah, Jerry and Ashley Watkins of Hustonville, Nicole Stevens of Parksville and Tiffany Lawhorn of Junction City.

Graveside services were held Monday, April 28, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Frankfort.

Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville, entrusted with arrangements.

EDGAR BENTLEY

Edgar Bentley, 85, of Lexington, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center.

Born October 14, 1922 at Democrat, KY in Letcher County, he was a son of the late Henry and Cordelia Martin Bentley.

Edgar served in World War II from 1941-1945. He was a coal miner for 15 years and later worked 25 years at the University of Kentucky as a maintenance foreman.

He is survived by: his wife, Lois: two children; Gordon Bentley of Lexington, and Teresa Bentley of Salvisa; one brother, Henry of Lake Park, GA; one sister, Bonnie Craft of Whitesburg.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home-Main Street, Lexington, by Brother Alan Dodson. Burial will be in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

EDDIE CAREY

Stanley E. “Eddie” Carey, 61, of Harrodsburg, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born Oct. 17, 1946 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Clara Opal Brown Carey and the late James Everett Carey and was the husband of Rosetta Logue Carey.

He was a retired supervisor at Bendix Automotive in Frankfort, a member of the Pioneer Baptist Church and was recently attending Southside Christian.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include: one daughter, Stacy Carey; two sons, Johnny L. Cox and James Carey; one sister, Ann Carey and two grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday, May 3 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bobby Logue officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Freddie Bottom, Joe Burton, Arvid Tackett, Vernon House, Jim Bechtel, Neil Reed, Joe Warner and Patrick Goodlett.

Memorial contributions may be made to Central Kentucky Cancer Program.

LAWTON HALL

Lawton Hall, 69, formerly of Salvisa, died April 7, 2008 at his home in Winchester.

Born in Cobb Hill, he was the son of Annie Ellen Gillespie Hall and the late Allie Hall and was the husband of Brenda Sullivan Hall.

He was a retired plumber and a member of the Franklin Avenue Church of the Living God in Winchester.

In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include: three sons, Rev. Thomas L. Hall, Dennis G. Hall and Erik S. Hall of Winchester; three daughters, Lisa Diane Foley of Midway, Sharon L. Hellard of Winchester and Shelley M. Hibbard of Lexington; three brothers, Omer Clay Hall of Stanford, Allie Hall, Jr. and Willam Raymond Hall of Cobb Hill, two sisters, Cynthia J. Hollon of Lexington and Alice L. Estes of Cobb Hill; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Price Hall.

The funeral was held Thursday, April 10 at the Franklin Avenue Church of the Living God in Winchester. Burial was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to a special fund for Mr. Hall’s burial expenses at The Church of the Living God, Winchester, KY 40391.
