BARBARA BAKER

Barbara Jean Baker, 65, of Hillcrest Drive, Danville, died Sunday, September 6, 2009, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Sunday, February 27, 1944, in Boyle County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Mack and Sara Margaret Robinson Shearer.

Barbara was a member of First Baptist Church. She was very artistic and enjoyed reading, making crafts and bead necklaces, collecting Boyd’s Bears, and listening to gospel music, particularly the Gaither’s. Barbara was a retired employee of American Greeting. She was the valedictorian of her 1962 Class at Danville High School.

Survivors include: her husband, whom she wed on November 15, 1966, James “Jim” Thomas Baker II of Danville; one son, James “Jimmy” Thomas Baker III of Danville; three daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Anne Wood, Barbara “Barbie” Jeanne (Christopher) Cooley, and Stephanie Michelle (Michael) Ridge, all of Danville; mother-in-law, Hazel Gertrude Baker of Danville; brothers, Tony Ray (Purnie) Shearer of Lincoln County and Walter Mack (Sue) Shearer, Jr. of Mackville; one sister, Sara “Penny” Margaret (David) McCarty of Campbellsville; nine grandchildren, Abby, Ashaley, T.J., Sam, Kristofer, Savannah, Ty, Sara, and Jasmine; and uncles, Billy and Joe Robinson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Rev. Tim Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Roger, Kenny, and Ed Robinson, Darryl, Jason, and Jacob Bryant, Scott Terry and John Boling.

Memorials are suggested to Gideons.

HELEN BRADLEY

Helen Ann Bradley, 70, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 at Harrodsburg Health Care.

She was born in Mercer County Oct. 8, 1938 to the late Sam and Ina Watts Bradley. She graduated from Mercer County High School and Danville School of Nursing. She was a former LPN at James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital and a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

Survivors include two brothers, Lloyd Bradley of Harrodsburg and Arthur Bradley of Danville, one sister, Margie Wynn of Portsmouth, OH, one aunt, Eva Foster of Bushnell, FL, one niece, two greatnieces and six cousins.

Services were conducted Sept. 9 at noon at Spring Hill Cemetery with John David Lane officiating.

HERBERT CUNLIFFE

Herbert Gordon Cunliffe, 88, of Lexington, formerly of Connecticut, died Sunday, September 6 at Harrodsburg Health Care in Harrodsburg.

Born in Central Falls, RI, he was a son of the late Harry and Elizabeth Brady Cunliffe.

He was a member of the Catholic faith and a retired sales manager for General Electric, Rockwell, and Choquette,. He had served as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II, and saw action in the South Pacific.

Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Frances G. Cunliffe of Lexington; one daughter, Barbara (William Sr.) Gunter of Lake Suzy, FL; one son, Walter (Sarah) Cunliffe of Lexington; four grandchildren, Christopher Cunliffe of Chicago, William Gunter Jr. of Stratford, CT, Elizabeth Granger of Milford, CT, Susan Vano of Ansonia, CT, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Cunliffe.

Funerals services will be conducted Thursday September 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in Camp Nelson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday September 9, 2009, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

MARIE GARTNER

Marie E. Gartner, 90, of Harrodsburg, widow of John M. Gartner, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009 at the Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 23, 1918 in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Anna (Ferris) Edwards. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Rita (Thomas) Bentley of Harrodsburg and a son, Denis (Patsy) Gartner of New Port Richey, FL; three step-grandsons, Brian (Carol) Bentley, Scott Bentley and Hilton (Patty) Newball; three step-greatgrandchildren, three step-great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers and a sister.

Services will be 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11 at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with Father Danny Schwendeman officiating. Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 11 from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.

BETTIE GIRTLEY

Bettie Jane Girtley, 66, of Frankfort, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Frankfort Regional Hospital.

Born April 17, 1943 in Boyle County, she was a daughter of the late Cleaver and Frances Elizabeth Roysdon Girtley. She formerly ran Shady Nook Daycare in Frankfort and was a member of the Christian Assembly Church in Frankfort.

Survivors include her brother, Stan Girtley of Frankfort; one nephew, Jarrod Girtley of Lawrenceburg; and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Jackie Girtley.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at the Christian Assembly Church in Frankfort with Pastor Roger Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in the Elder Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 11 from 5-8 p.m. at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home and on Saturday, Sept. 12 after 10 a.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Christian Assembly Church, 5200 Owenton Road, US 127 N, PO Box 477, Frankfort, KY 40602.

MICHAEL GRAHAM SR.

Michael Lee Graham, Sr., of Alum Springs Road, died Thursday, September 3, 2009, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Sunday, April 11, 1954, in Danville, he was a son of Millard and Lula Dye Graham.

Michael was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a farmer and a security guard at Phillips Lighting for Clark’s Security Company. He enjoyed watching C.O.P.S. on TV and working on his farm and in his tobacco. Michael was a 1973 graduate of Boyle County High School and an avid UK and Boyle County football fan.

Survivors include: his wife, whom he wed on January 3, 1975, Julia Ann Southerland Graham; sons, Joseph (Ashley) Graham of Hustonville and Michael (Nicole) Graham, Jr. of Petersburg, PA; his parents, Millard and Lula Graham of Lancaster; brothers, Tim Graham of Carlisle and James Graham of Danville; sister, Judy Howard of Nicholasville; and four grandchildren, Dakota, Taliah, Noah, and Jaden.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 9, at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville with Bro. Steve James officiating. Burial will follow in Burgin Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Robbie Barron, Ronnie Yates, Jason and Bertice Riley, and Chris and Chucky Vaught.

Memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes. Association.

LULA HURLBERT V

Lula Mae Walton Hurlbert V, 78, of Harrodsburg, formerly of Danville, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009 at Harrodsburg Health Care.

Born Sept. 2, 1931 in Memphis, TN, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Lula Mae Wilson Walton. She was the widow of Preston Hurlbert. She was a receptionist at the McDowell Place of Danville and was a believer of Jesus Christ.

Survivors include three sons, Bob Buckingham of Cadiz, Keith Buckingham of Blufton, OH and Larry (Donna) Porter of Memphis, TN; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

DAVID LAY

David Lay, 57, husband of Barbara Cutter Lay, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 13, 1952 in Boyle County, he was the son of the late Lilburn G. and Lillie Curtis York Lay. He was a member of the Shakertown Baptist Church, was a mechanic at Wausau Paper in Harrodsburg and formerly worked in maintenance at Cudahy and Dairymen.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Michelle (Ronnie) Guy of Springfield and Sherrie (Charlie) Reynolds of Sadieville; one son, Keith (Ashley) Lay of Burgin; three sisters, Doris (Howard) West of Burgin, Pearl (Jimmy) Roberts of Junction City and Gladys Waterstrat of Danville, IL; three brothers, Cecil (Hazel) Lay of Danville, John (Louada) Leigh of Danville, IL and Peevine (Joann) Sims of Florida; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Estill and Ralph Leigh and one sister, Stella Sims.

Services were held Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 at the Shakertown Baptist Church with Bro. Joe Smith officiating. Burial was in Burgin Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers were David Brown, Frankie Phillips, Jackie Leece, Mike Turner, Jeff Turner, and Ronnie Thornton. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren and members of the Maintenance Crew at Wausau Paper.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Commonwealth Cancer Center, 216 Southtown Drive, Danville, KY 40422.

WILLIAM RECTOR

William Garrett Rector, 66, of Lexington, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born Jan. 2, 1943 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Cecil Rector and Laura Hensley Rector Stinnett. He was a retired self-employed handy-man.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Rector and Cathy Rector (Ron) Batten, both of Lexington; one son, Garrett (Dawn) Rector of Lexington; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnnie and Eugene Rector and three sisters, Ruth Lamb, Bernice Wiley and Sue Beasley.

Services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at the Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Allen Hensley officiating.

THOMAS SHUCK

Thomas Shuck, age 79, 105 Sunset Drive, Hustonville, husband of Maureen Theresa McDonnell Shuck, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, Danville, KY.

Born March 25, 1930 in Mercer Co., KY, he was the son of the late John Alfreda and Edna Florence Huffman Shuck. He was an US Air Force veteran of the Korean War where he was the Chief Flight Nechanic for the first Jet Ace pilot in Korea, and was a retired Aerospace Engineer for Rockwell International, having worked on the Apollo and Space Shuttle projects. He was a member of the Ebenezer Church of Christ, the American Legion, the NRA, and he attended Campbellsville College and was a graduate of the Univ. of Kentucky. Thomas was an avid golfer (experiencing a hole-in-one), gardener, and UK sports fan.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Julia Ann Kiker of CA, Sharon Helene Cossentine of Danville, KY, Kara Danielle Shuck of Memphis, TN; one sister, Agnes Stockdale of Kokomo, IN, CA; five brothers, Frankie Shuck of Versailles, KY, Razz Shuck of Versailles, KY, William Shuck of Lawrenceburg, KY, Bobby Shuck, and Edward Shuck; half-sister: Edna Mae Shuck and four grandchildren: Robert Thomas Kiker, Caitlin Arndt, Audrey Beth Cossentine, and Amanda Brady. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Jimmy Shuck.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Thursday, September 10, at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by Jeff Johnson with burial in the Ebenezer Cemetery, Salvisa.

Pallbearers will be: Frankie Shuck, Razz Shuck, Leon Lambert, Phil Cossentine, Steve Henchen, Steve Shuck and Bob Kiker.

Visitation Wednesday, September 9, from 5:00 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Ransdell Funeral Chaple, Harrodsburg, KY.

LEONA YEAST

Leona Yeast, 81, of Harrodsburg died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009 at the Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC.

Born Sept. 4, 1927 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late James Nelson and Ethel Mae Sandidge Yeast. She graduated from West Side High School, was a former seamstress at Cricketeer Manufacturing Co. and was a member of 1st Baptist Church in Harrodsburg where she sang in the choir.

Survivors include one son, Jack L. Johnson of Harrodsburg; three daughters, Andrea (Nathan) White of Columbia, SC, Jada (Ryan) Draper of Lexington and Renee Mina Yeast; one brother, Benny Yeast and one sister, Edna Baker, both of Harrodsburg; six grandchildren, one greatgrandchild, several nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Johnson, a daughter, Laverne Johnson and a brother, Francis Leroy Yeast.

Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Centennial Baptist Church with Elder J.D. Short III officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.

RALPH BAKER

Ralph Kenneth Baker, 66, husband of Rhonda Shewmaker Baker of Harrodsburg, died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 at his residence.

Born in Mercer County April 6, 1943, he was the son of the late John D. and Sallie Belle Coyle Baker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Shelby Heating and Air Conditioning and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Susan Watts of Harrodsburg; four brothers, Donald Ray Baker of Burgin, Jim Baker, David Lee Baker and Ronnie Baker, all of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Corene Humfleet and Irene White , both of Harrodsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Baker.

Services were Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Alexander & Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Kenny Queener officiating. Interment with military Honors was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jered Scott Baker, Adam White , Kevin Good, Bob Richmond, J.C. Patterson and Rodney Raley. Honorary pallbearers were James Allen Baker, Earl Wayne Baker and Blair Pittman.
