James Buford Jones Sr.

Aug. 5, 1911 - April 14, 2003

HARRISONBURG, La. - Services for James Buford Jones Sr., 91, of Ferriday, who died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Columns Nursing Home in Jonesville, will be at 2 p.m. today at Myers Bend Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Bill Cotton and Andy Wilson officiating.

Burial will be in Heard cemetery in Manifest under the direction of Young's Funeral Home.

Mr. Jones was born Aug. 5, 1911, in Calhoun City.

He was retired from Redd Pest Control and was a member of Hill Baptist Memorial Church.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Jones and Cathrine Jennett Jones; one brother, Clarence Jones; and his wife, Lola Beatrice Jones.

Survivors include two daughters, Maude Joiner of West Monroe and Doris Elaine Arnold of Pollack; four sons, James Buford Jones Jr. of Manifest, Warren Edward Jones of Winnsboro, Leman Howel Jones of Natchez and Robert Eugene Jones of West Monroe; three brothers, Robert Jones of Jacksonville, Fla., Jackie Jones of Joner, Ark., and Raymond Jones of Hernando; three sisters, Lonia Jones of Joner, Rachel Jones of Nashville, Tenn., and Margie Peck of Hernando; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dan Jones, Jimmy Jones, Chris Jones, Alvin Poole, Mike Poole and Steve McKey.

Blanche Marie Sproles McDonald

July 4, 1932 - April 13, 2003

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Blanche Marie Sproles McDonald, 70, of Natchez, who died Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Natchez, will be at 11 a.m. today at Comer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Murray officiating.

Burial will be at South Central cemetery in Wisner under the direction of Comer Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Mrs. McDonald was born July 4, 1932, in Chase, the daughter of Luther and Etta Nations Sproles.

She was a retired registered nurse and a Baptist.

Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters.

She was survived by her husband, Charles McDonald of Natchez; a son, Lin McDonald and his wife, Dana, of Lake Charles; a daughter, Donnah Marie McDonald of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Verma Lee Gwin of Baskin; and four grandchildren, Tyler McDonald, Brandy Marie Gunstanson, Nicole Lynn Gunstanson, and Brandon Chase Gunstanson.

Pallbearers will be her nephews.

Margaret Zellner Rice

Feb. 9, 1919 - Dec. 28, 2002

BENTLEY, La. - Graveside services for Margaret Zellner Rice, 83, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove cemetery with the Rev. Jason Woodard officiating.

Burial will follow under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rice was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Savannah, Ga.

She was co-owner of Natchez Mattress and Furniture Co. and a member of First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and discipleship training for many years.

Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her husband, Haywood Rice; one sister, Edna Kelley; and one great-grandson, Eric Allen Fifield.

Survivors include one son, William O. "Bill" Rice and his wife, Martha, both of Natchez; one daughter, Angela Rice Fifield and her husband, David, both of Alliance, Neb.; four grandchildren, Kris Fifield Shafer of Lincoln, Neb., Jeff Fifield of Alliance, Michael Rice of Natchez and Jennifer Rice Ashley and her husband, Joey, both of Magee; five great-grandchildren, Cari Waybright, Michael Waybright, Irin Fifield, Jeremy Fifield and Anna-Kaitlyn Ashley; and one great-great-granchild, Gage Adamson.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 150 D'Evereux Drive, Natchez, MS 39120.

James M. Hogg

Sept. 1, 1926 - Dec. 29, 2002

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for James M. Hogg, 76, of Natchez, formerly of Jackson, who died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in Ferriday, La., will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Comer Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ed Cotton officiating.

Burial will be at Bougere cemetery near Vidalia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Hogg was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Baton Rouge, the son of Roger and Mary Dellinger Hogg. He was a security guard with Guardsman Co. in Jackson and a member of Bougere Baptist Church. He was a veteran of both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, JoAnn Carney Hogg; his second wife, Betty JoMurrah Hogg; a son, Joe Carney Hogg; and two half-borthers, Robert Griffith and George Griffith.

Survivors include a sister, Lucille Peyton of Millbrook, Ala.; a brother, Arthur Griffith of Baton Rouge; and four grandchildren, JoAnn Spencer, Joe Perkins Jr., Frankie Perkins and Wesley Perkins.

Pallbearers will be Keister Dellinger, Travis Floyd, H.L. Corley, Henry Dell Nelson, Lee Roberts and Billy Nelson Jr.

Arla Hollis

FERRIDAY, La. - Funeral arrangements for Arla Hollis, 75, of Waterproof, who died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in Ferriday, are incomplete at Comer Funeral Home.

Annie Bell Shields

June 21, 1919 - April 1, 2003

WATERPROOF, La. - Services for Annie Bell Shields, 83, of St. Joseph, who died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Lakeland Medical Center in New Orleans, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Choctaw Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Brown officiating.

Burial will follow in Barcelona cemetery in Waterproof under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shields was born June 21, 1919, in Waterproof, the daughter of Willie and Zeanna Rogers Ellis. She was a homemaker and a member of Choctaw Chapel Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Shields was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Shields Sr.; her parents; two sons, Alfred Shields and Afred Shields; and four children in infancy.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Toledano, Isabella Topps and Bertha Nelson, all of New Orleans, and Henrietta Reynolds of Los Angeles; five sons, Joseph Shields of Riverside, Calif., Ray Shields Jr. and Bennie Shields, both of Seattle, Delaware Shields of Edmonds, Wash., and Willie Shields of New Orleans; six daughters-in-law; four sons-in-law; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one godchild, Francis Reed of Los Angeles; one brother, Cornelius Scott of New Orleans; one sister-in-law, Isabella Thomas of New Orleans; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Glenis Hope Amox

April 2, 1942 - April 9, 2003

VIDALIA, La. - Services for Glenis Hope Amox, 61, of Ruston, who died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Lincoln General Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Young's Funeral Home with Walton Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of the funeral home. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ms. Amox was born April 2, 1942, in Longview, Texas. She was a self-employed artist and a Baptist.

Ms. Amox was preceded in death by her father, Glen Clifton Amox; her mother, Helen Kelly Amox; and one niece, Nikko Lynn Beach.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Amox and his wife, Michele, both of Edmond, Okla., and Lancer Wayne Stokes of Atlanta, Texas; one daughter, Teresa Amox Rosado of Ruston; two sisters, Nancy Halford of Natchez and Gayle Cowan of Ferriday; two brothers, Harlan Amox of Snyder, Texas, and Jimmie Amox of Lewisburg, La.; and one grandson, Mason Parker Stokes.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth M. Halford, Lander Wayne Stuckey, James Victor Rosado, Samuel Glen Fitze, Donald Wayne Stuckey and Harlan Russell Amox.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Wayne Stokes, Dale Cowan and Alford Ray Beach.

Oliver Wiley

Jan. 10, 1934 - April 8, 2003

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for Oliver Wiley, 69, of Ferriday, who died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Alexandria, will be at 10 a.m. today at Comer Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Don Tate officiating.

Burial will be in Rogers cemetery in Clayton under the direction of Comer Funeral Home.

Mr. Wiley was born Jan. 10, 1934, in Pineville, the son of Louis and Annie W. Wiley. He was a resident of Ferriday since 1957, was a member of the Church of Christ in Ferriday and was a retired engineer from Louisiana Department of Public Works in 1987. He was former owner of Wiley's Small Engine in Ferriday.

Mr. Wiley was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Nan Seymour Wiley of Ferriday; one daughter, April Pedretti of Alexandria; one sister, Gracey Bennett of Jonesville; and three grandchildren, Levi, Scarlett and Sterling "Gus" Pedretti.

Pallbearers will be A.J. Breithaupt, Glenn Seymour, H.C. Book, Nap Book, Sam Refro and Terry Crochet. Honorary pallbearers will be Albert Chapman, James Smith, Tony Pedretti, Harry Greer, Hershel Barron, the Rev. Jimmy Swaggart, Harold Hawkins and Hal Garner.

The family requests memorials be made to a charity of your choice.

Joel Ray Freeman Jr.

ZACHARY, La. - Services for Joel Ray Freeman Jr., 46, of St. Francisville, who died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in Duson, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Charlet Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Charlet Funeral Home of Zachary.

Visitation is from 8:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

He was a native of Vidalia.

Mr. Freeman was preceded in death by his father, Joel Freeman Sr.; maternal grandparents, Bill and Clydis Hendrix; paternal grandmother, Julius Freeman.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Sissy and Don Alonzo of Lafayette; stepmother, Shelby Freeman of Vidalia; paternal grandmother, Clara Freeman; two sons, Justin and Tony Freeman of St. Francisville; three sisters, Pamela Curtis and her husband, Jack, both of Tupelo, Angela Muse and her husband, Rusty, both of Lafayette, and Laura Freeman of Roanoke, Va.; one brother, Larry Freeman and his wife, Sigrun, both of Tacoma, Wash.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Harry Watkins

Nov. 21, 1914- April 3, 2003

JONESBORO, La. - Graveside services for Harry Watkins, 88, of Clayton, who did Thursday, April 3, 2003, in Clayton, will be at 2 p.m. today at Gayla Traina cemetery with the Rev. Jim Clay officiating.

Comer Funeral Home in Ferriday is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Watkins was born Nov. 21, 1914, in Wyatt, La., the son of D.L. and Rosie H. Watkins. He was a retired chief engineer for Zapata Dredge and Boat Dock Co. of New Orleans. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Norred Watkins of Clayton; a daughter, Sharon Wagner of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepson, Jim Clay of Alexandria; a brother, Lyman Watkins of Jonesboro; two grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren.

Jimmie Williams

FERRIDAY, La. - Funeral arrangements for the Rev. Jimmie Williams, 68, of St. Joseph, La., who died Friday, March 28, 2003, at St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, are incomplete at Concordia Funeral Home.

George Parker Sr.

Sept. 28, 1947 - March 27, 2003

FERRIDAY, La. - Services for George Parker Sr., 55, of Ferriday, who died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Alexandria, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rufus Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Knight officiating.

Burial will be in Pine Hill Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Parker was born Sept. 28, 1947, in Waterproof, the son of Tom and Helen Cubie Parker.

He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service in Ferriday, was a Baptist and served in the U.S. Army from August 1966 to September 1969.

Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary P. Smith, Betty P. Lloyd and Ora P. Montague; two brothers, Charlie Parker and Sam Parker.

Survivors include two sons, SPC George Parker Jr. of Ft. Jackson, S.C., and Jermeny Parker of Ferriday; two daughters, Sgt. Katina J. Watts of Ft. Gordon, Ga., and Alisha Parker of Ferriday; three brothers, Tom Parker Jr. and his wife, Beulah, both of Houston, Kary Parker and his wife, Enzia, both of Chicago and James Parker Sr. of Ferriday; six sisters, Vera P. Bell and her husband, Willie, both of New Orleans, Gloria P. Fleming and her husband, Frank, both of Oak Park, Mich., Helen P. Brown and her husband, Joseph, Annie L. Parker and Evelyn L. Parker, all of Ferriday, and Sarah M. Parker of Monroe; 21 nieces; 20 nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Lois J. Parker of Westlake, La., and Marie J. Parker of Dallas.

Robert Lee Jones

June 28, 1959 - March 30, 2003

ST. JOSEPH, La. - Services for Robert Lee Jones, 43, of Waterproof, who died Sunday, March 30, 2003, in Waterproof, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Guildfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Benny Britton officiating.

Burial will be in the Natchez National cemetery under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home of Ferriday.

Visitation is from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Jones was born June 28, 1959, in Monroe, the son of Sam and Amy Wattley Jones.

He was a service station attendant, a Baptist and served in the U.S. Army from July 1978 to August 1982.

Survivors include one son, Shermaine Bangham of Waterproof; two stepdaughters, Lanthia Bangham of Ferriday and LaChoy Bangham of Waterproof; three brothers, Sam Jones Jr. of Clayton, Johnny Dunbar of Sicily Island and Lawrence Dunbar of Natchez; three sisters, Cora Williams and her husband, Jimmy and Pauline Townsend and her husband, Richard, all of St. Joseph and Mary Alice Dunbar of Clayton; five step-grandchildren; two aunts; two uncles; one great-uncle; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
