Prior to his election as police chief, he served as a Vidalia patrol officer for three years.

Known affectionately as "Chief" by many, Thornhill set a precedent of progress in the town's police department, launching it into the age of technology and forensics with the training of a full-time identifications and photography expert, installing and upgrading of law enforcement computers and encouraging continued, advanced training of VPD staff in all areas of law enforcement.

He moved to Vidalia in 1949 following his military service and worked as a barber until joining the police department in 1973.

He was recognized and honored throughout the years by both his peers and his community, being elected to serve as president of the North Louisiana Chapter of the Chiefs of Police in 1984, twice selected by the Vidalia Women's Club as grand marshal of the Vidalia Christmas Parade, and being named as the top community leader in an area newspaper survey several years ago.

He served as director of Red River Delta Law Enforcement Planning Council for many years. Sheriff Randy Maxwell, a former Louisiana State Trooper and long-time friend of Chief Thornhill's said Tuesday afternoon, "The Chief was loved very, very much and highly respected in the law enforcement community. He was known around the state for having a top-notch police department. He was compassionate and he dearly loved his family and his community. We'll miss him enormously."

Kathleen Stevens, former news editor of The Concordia Sentinel, worked closely with Chief Thornhill on many news stories. "The Chief's honesty and integrity were unparalleled, " Stevens said.
