A medical assistant and resident and native of Baton Rouge, she died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident. She was 33. Visiting was at New Southside Funeral Home from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003. Religious service at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, conducted by the Rev. Roland Glover. Interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Survived by husband, Joseph Payne; mother, Joyce Johnson Brown; a daughter, Kiara Rena Johnson; three sons, Leon Markey Johnson, Joshua Jerrell Johnson and Jacob Jamine Payne; two sisters, Shondricka Monique Brown and Sandra G. Irvin; two brothers, Daniel Ezekiel Brown and Kevin L. Wells; and a grandchild, Jamarion Le'Dre Jones. preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.

PURVIS, AUDREY K.
Died at 3:42 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at St. Helena Parish Nursing Home in Greensburg. She was 83 and a resident and native of Independence. Graveside service at Killian Chapel cemetery, Hillsdale, at 2 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. Mike Bassemier. Survived by a daughter, Ellen Purvis Stevens, Amite; a grandson, Darrell Stevens Sr., Calhoun, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Jessica Ellen Stevens, Amite, and Darrell Stevens Jr., Gulfport, Miss.; a great-great-granddaughter, Haley Nicole Stevens, Gulfport; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Maurice Welch. preceded in death by her husband, Roy George Purvis; three brothers, T.C., Howard and William; three sisters, Annie, Irene and Alma; and mother, Mary Jones. McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, in charge of arrangements.

RESTER, JUEL JOHN
Retired from Exxon Corp. and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 89 and a native of Varnado. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, with re-citation of the rosary at 6 p.m. led by Deacon Phil BeJeaux. Visiting in the funeral home chapel from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, conducted by the Rev. Lee Shipp. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by his wife, Elva Rester; a daughter, Carolyn Fritchie; three sons, Billy R. Rester, Leon J. Rester and Glenn Rester; three sisters, Edith Norton, Odell Henry and Aliwee Ray; a brother, Winston Rester; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. preceded in death by his parents, Joe Rester and Nettie Wheat Rester; and four sisters, Dollie Bergeron, Thera Austin, Alta Walker and Bernice Causey. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Eric Rester, Ken Rester, Jacob Rester, John Hardwick, Joshua Kirby and Daryl Hardwick. Honorary pallbearer is Jerry Rester.

ROBERT, ANNE MARIE
A resident of Burnside, she died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. She was 90 and a native of Remy. Visiting at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Darrow, from 9:30 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Smith. Interment in Ascension Catholic cemetery, Donaldsonville. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Amadee and Paula Robert. Special thanks to the staffs at Azalea Estates and St. Clare Manor for their care, love and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity. Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, in charge of arrangements.

SCHEXNAYDER, SR. PERRY J. "FLASH"
A resident of Gonzales, he died at 7:19 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, in Gonzales. He was 72 and a native of Union. Arrangements pending with Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales.

SLAYTON, MADOLINE SMITH
Died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at a nursing home in Mobile, Ala. She was a native of Mississippi and a former longtime resident of Baton Rouge. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, 6700 Florida Blvd., from noon until religious service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. She is survived by a son, Grant Slayton, Mobile; seven grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Claudette and Art Lindsay, Mobile; and two sisters-in-law, Myrtis Smith, Mobile, and Jean Hill, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Olivia Vince; and husband, Hudson Slayton.

STEWART, RUBY BOYD
A retired accountant with the Louisiana Office of Highways and a resident of Baton Rouge, she died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Harvest Manor Nursing Home, Denham Springs. She was 93 and a native of Mississippi. Visiting was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Visiting in the funeral home chapel from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Allen Johnson. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Francis and Lonny Ulmer, Houston; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lonnie and Norma Stewart, Pride, and James Jr. and Peggy Stewart, Baton Rouge; a brother and sister-in-law, L.W. and Deatrice Boyd, Birmingham, Ala.; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. preceded in death by her husband, James M. Stewart Sr.; parents, William and Sadie Boyd; and a sister, Gladys Boyd Smith. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. The family wishes to thank the staff at Harvest Manor Nursing Home for their special and loving care given to Mrs. Stewart.

VARNADO, JUANITA ARNOLD
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, following complications from heart surgery in Houston. Visitation will be at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Visitation at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until service at 11 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. T.W. Terral, the Rev. Paul Taylor and the Rev. Nathan Firmin. Burial in Evergreen Memorial Park, Denham Springs. She was 74, born May 20, 1929. She left to cherish her memory her husband of 54 years and 11 months, Gerald M. Varnado; a brother, Charles "Jack" Arnold; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald L. "Butch" and Juanette Varnado and Gary E. and Tammra Varnado; grandchildren and spouses, Paula and Sean Sullivan, Leanne Lee and Jimmy Davis, Gary E. "Scooter" and Domenica Varnado, Gerry and Karisha Varnado, Jared Michael Varnado and Casey Lee; and great-grandchildren, Trey, Dylan, Peyton, Trent and Aidan Varnado and Clayton Lee. She was preceded in death by her parents, H.L. "Ham" and Mittie Arnold; a sister, Hazel Rackley; and brothers, Leon, Lawrence "Bo," Alton "Mutt" and Rudolph Arnold. Pallbearers will be Jerry Varnado, Gary E. Varnado Jr., Jared Varnado, Ray Arnold, Sean Sullivan and Jimmy Davis. Her bright and shining spirit will forever live in our hearts.

WASHINGTON, EDNA MARIE
A homemaker and resident of East Baton Rouge Parish, she died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at 6:05 a.m. She was 79. Visiting at Winnfield Funeral Home from 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Perry Wright. Interment in Winnfield Memorial Park. She is survived by two sons, Willie Washington Jr. and Tyronne Lee Washington; a daughter-in-law, Bridget G. Washington; and a grandson, Willie Washington III. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Alma Dawson and John Dawson.

WESLEY, LESSIE MAE TAYLOR
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at her home in the arms of her loved ones. She was 77, a native of Covington and a resident of Denham Springs. She was a former shipping clerk with Home Appliance Service in Baton Rouge. Visitation was at Seale Funeral Home, Denham Springs, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2003. Visitation at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service at 3 p.m. Saturday. Burial in Beech Ridge cemetery, Denham Springs. Survived by her husband, Warren B. Wesley Sr., Denham Springs; five children, Warren B. Wesley Jr. and wife Violet "Cookie," Darlene Wesley Schenk and husband Don, Denise Wesley Frazier, Jan Wesley McDonald and husband Jerry, and Tammie Wesley Jones and husband Troy; two brothers, Horace Garfield Taylor and Earnest Perrin Taylor; two sisters, Esther Louise Taylor Duncan and Mable Earlene Taylor Ryburn; 10 grandchildren, James Wesley, Christopher Wesley, Julie Wesley Anderson, Trey Schenk, Geoffrey Wesley, Micah Frazier, Rhea McDonald, Casey McDonald, Donnie McDonald and Allison Taylor Jones; and four great-grandchildren, Scarlet Wesley, Noah Wesley, Jordyn Wesley and Kristin Anderson. She was preceded in death by a brother, S.B. Taylor; a sister, Martha Jewel Taylor; mother, Mary Susan Ford; stepmother, Mattie Virginia Parker; and father, Edgar Arthur Taylor.
