Amelda C. Murphy, a homemaker, died Saturday at her home. She was 84. Ms. Murphy was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past five years. She was a member of the Metairie Manor Guild. Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Ryan and Joan Dubuc. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park.

ROACH, CARMEN LaFRANCE
February 12, 2002

Carmen LaFrance Roach, a homemaker, died Saturday at River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace. She was 79. Mrs. Roach was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include four daughters, Rita J. Langston, Darnell Roach, Linda Pizzettier and Karen LoCascio; three brothers, Larry, Harry and Gary Roach; a sister, Eunice Landry; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Vincent de Paul cemetery No. 3.

FACIO, MILDRED STRASSEL
February 12, 2002

Mildred Strassel Facio, a homemaker, died Saturday at Waldon Healthcare Center. She was 81. Mrs. Facio was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie. Survivors include two sons, Ralph and Robert Facio Jr.; a daughter, Miriam Facio; three brothers, Milton L., Lawrence J. and Ralph G. Strassel; a sister, Gladys S. Pacaccio; and a grandchild. A Mass will be said Thursday at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park cemetery.

DURAND, MARGARET P. ‘MS. D' ‘MS. LADY' ‘GUS'
February 12, 2002

Margaret P. "Ms. D" "Ms. Lady" "Gus" Durand, a homemaker, died Wednesday of undetermined causes at her home. She was 71. Mrs. Durand was born in Ramseur, N.C., and lived in Washington, D.C., for five years and in New Orleans for the past 45 years. She graduated from Randolph County High School in Ramseur. She was a former cook for Uncle Dan's Restaurant and a former sales associate for Berner's Heating and Air Conditioning. She was a member of St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana and its Rose of Sharon Auxiliary. She also attended Beacon Light Missionary Church. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Benn-Bell and Marva L. Durand; a brother, Roy C. Phillips of Washington; three sisters, Mary Eva Headen of Liberty, N.C., Monty Smith of High Point, N.C., and Sara Jane Phillips of Baltimore; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Charbonnet-Labat Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery.

DIXON, ELSIE MAY
February 12, 2002

Elsie May Dixon, a homemaker, died Sunday of emphysema at Doctors Hospital. She was 70. Mrs. Dixon was a lifelong resident of Bucktown. She was a parishioner of St. Louis King of France Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Claude Dixon Sr.; a son, Joseph Claude Dixon Jr.; two daughters, Patricia D. Sauvé and Shelby D. Breaux; her mother, Beatrice Marie Gillette Culligan; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park.

SIMONDS, DAVID MICHAEL
April 8, 2002

David Michael Simonds, a business owner and construction contractor, died Friday of heart failure at Kenner Regional Medical Center. He was 51. Mr. Simonds was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie and Kenner for many years. He graduated from East Jefferson High School and attended Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He was a member of Phi Sigma Chi Fraternity. Survivors include his wife, Judy Wingfield Simonds; three sons, Jason, Justin and Mark Simonds; two daughters, Brandy Callendar and Gabrielle Brown; his father, Chester Simonds; his mother, Rita Simonds; a sister, Susan Simonds; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m.

PERRY, GENEVA ‘JENNY'
April 8, 2002

Geneva "Jenny" Perry, a retired waitress at Pete's Restaurant, died Friday of cancer at her daughter's home. She was 78. Mrs. Perry was born in Lake Charles and lived in New Orleans for the past 65 years. She was employed by Maison Blanche for 40 years. She was a member of the Monday Night Fatima Rosary Group and the High Ballers Carnival Club. Survivors include a daughter, Darleen Perry Winchester; a brother, Robert Lisotta; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

MACKEY, HERBERT
April 8, 2002

Herbert Mackey, a retired truck driver, died Thursday at his home. He was 93. Mr. Mackey was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be private.

CORY, VERNA MORRIS HOOVER
April 8, 2002

Verna Morris Hoover Cory, a homemaker, died Saturday at North Oaks Medical Center. She was 93. Mrs. Cory was born in Tangipahoa Parish and lived in Ponchatoula for many years. Survivors include three sisters, Margie Ballard, Loney Bell Findley and Shirley Grantham. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Harry McKneeley and Son, 2000 N. Morrison Blvd., Hammond. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Ponchatoula cemetery.

HARRISON, JANIE INEZ BOWENS
April 8, 2002

Janie Inez Bowens Harrison, a retired food service worker for the Orleans Parish School Board, died Wednesday of congestive failure at Lakeland Medical Center. She was 63. Mrs. Harrison was born in Bladen County, N.C., and lived in Marrero for many years. Survivors include a son, Ernest Harrison Jr.; five daughters, Cecelia Ervin, Etachel Brown and Debra, Janie and Melissa Harrison; a sister, Meta Faye Ruffin, of Bladen County; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 8 p.m. at Davis Mortuary Service, 230 Monroe St., Gretna. Dismissal will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in New Hope cemetery.

BIVENS, ISAAC H.
April 8, 2002

The Rev. Isaac H. Bivens, pastor of Boynton United Methodist Church for the past eight years, died Thursday of a heart attack at his home. he was 74. Dr. Bivens was born in Beverly, N.J., and lived in the New Orleans area for many years. He graduated from West Virginia State College and Boston University School of Theology. He received the Doctor of Divinity degree from Wiley College. He was an Associate Professor of Religion and Chaplain at Dillard University for 11 years. He served 14 years as the assistant general secretary for the Africa/Europe/Middle East region of the World Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. He was a founding member and board member of the TransAfrica organization. He served as dean of students for Mississippi State Valley College and Huston Tillotson College. He pastored churches in Sacramento, Calif., and New York City. Survivors include his wife, Sonia Hylton Bivens; three sons, Bernard, Martin and Jerome Bivens; three daughters, Sandra Bivens Anderson, April and Heather Bivens; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Dillard University Lawless Memorial Chapel, 2601 Gentilly Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
