WOODIEL, JOHN W. JR.
March 19, 2002

John W. Woodiel Jr., a Republican activist, died March 5 of cancer at his home. He was 76. Mr. Woodiel was born in Enola, Ark., and lived in Luling for 48 years. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1949 from Arkansas State Teachers College. He was employed by Lion Oil/Monsanto for 21 years and retired from Woodiel Construction Co. Inc., which he founded in 1973. Mr. Woodiel organized the St. Charles Parish Republican Party in 1965 and served for many years as chairman of the parish Republican Executive Committee. He was elected in 1968 to the first of five terms representing St. Charles Parish on the Republican State Central Committee and worked on local, state and national Republican campaigns. He attended the 1984 Republican national convention as an alternate delegate and was a member of the Lafourche Basin Levee Commission from 1980 to 1984. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church and had been a parishioner of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Luling. He served on the construction committees of both churches and was an usher at Holy Family. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Latinaires Dance Club. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Breyel Woodiel; two sons, John Woodiel III of Dallas and Christopher Davis Woodiel of Baton Rouge; a daughter, Deborah W. Spencer of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Syble Sims of Austin, Ark., and Betty Dodgen-Mundt of Sacramento, Calif.; six granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Luling. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Charles cemetery in Luling. Westside Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

LANDRY, MILTON ELDEN
March 19, 2002

Milton Elden Landry, a retired vice president of Gulf Engineering Co., died Friday at his home. He was 78. Mr. Landry was born in Harvey and lived in New Orleans for the past 56 years. He graduated from Gretna High School, Delgado Trade School and Tulane University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Landry was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church. He was president of the American Welding Society, treasurer and director of Kiwanis Club of Algiers and a member of the International Maintenance Institute, International Management Council and the Vibration Institute. He was on the board of directors of the Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Survivors include his wife, Maxine P. Landry, and a son, Milden A. "Nic" Landry. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 3101 Eton St., Algiers. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna. Mothe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JOURNEE, SHIRLEY MAE BANKS
March 19, 2002

Shirley Mae Banks Journee, a homemaker, died Friday of renal failure at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 40. Mrs. Journee was born in New Orleans and lived in Harvey. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Survivors include her husband, Harold Journee II; a son, Eduardo Banks; and her mother, Dorothy Mae Banks. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home, 2120 Jackson Ave. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.

ALIDOR, MARY MARGARITE
March 19, 2002

Mary Margaret Alidor, a homemaker, died Sunday at St. Tammany Hospital. She was 99. Mrs. Alidor was born in New Orleans and lived there for many years before moving to Mandeville five years ago. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Alidor Kornfield Sagona; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home, 1717 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Patrick cemetery No. 1.

GAMBEL, LORRAINE NALTY
March 18, 2002

Lorraine Nalty Gambel, owner and operator of Creative Specialties Inc., died Saturday at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 90. Mrs. Gambel was born in Brookhaven, Miss., and lived in Metairie for the past 60 years. She was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was a founding member of the Debutante Club and served as Queen of Proteus and Osirus. She headed the first major fund-raising event for Children's Hospital. She was a member of the Louisiana Historical Society and the Southern Yacht Club. She organized the Academy of the Sacred Heart's Centennial Exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum. She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart and served on the Alumnae Board for more than 40 years. She was an active member of the Children of Mary. She received the Alumna of the Year award and the Cor Unum award. Survivors include four sons, Charles L. Gambel Jr., William C., Raymond H., and Gregory F. Gambel; a daughter, Ellen Gambel Simon; two brothers, Donald J. and Paul A. Nalty; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will be today from 6 to 9 p.m.

ROBINSON, BEULAH ROBICHAUX
March 16, 2002

Beulah Robichaux Robinson, a retired housekeeper for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, died Tuesday at Tulane University and Clinic. She was 86. Ms. Robinson was a lifelong resident of Thibodaux. She was a member of the Ladies Altar Society and Young at Heart. She received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Bishop's Medal for Outstanding Service to the Church. She was also a volunteer for several other organizations. Survivors include a stepson, Joseph Robinson Jr.; a stepdaughter, Jackie El Torro; and a sister, Patricia Patterson. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 2085 St. Mary St., Thibodaux. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. with a rosary at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Williams and Southall Funeral Home in Thibodaux is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD, CARL JOSEPH
March 16, 2002

Carl Joseph Richard, founder and former owner of Calmar Builders, died Tuesday at his home. He was 89. Mr. Richard was born in Chacahoula and lived in Mandeville. During World War II, he was a draftsman with Equitable Equipment, Higgins Marine Sales and Avondale Marine Ways. He was a member of Perfect Union Masonic Lodge No. 1, Grand Lodge of Louisiana. He was a Mason for more than 50 years. He was a longtime member of Lakeview Fun Lovers Club and a member of the Bards of Bohemia. Survivors include his wife, Martha Edgecombe Richard; a son, Michel "Mitch" Richard; a daughter, Carrol Richard Stumpf of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Enola R. Sara and Marie R. LeBlanc; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be said today at 2 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.

MONETTE, JOSEPH
March 16, 2002

Joseph Monette, a former barber, died Monday at Memorial Medical Center. He was 84. Mr. Monette was born in Youngville and lived in New Orleans for the past 25 years. He was a World War II veteran. He participated in the Senior Olympics as a runner. Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Monet; and a sister, Nola Perodin of Los Angeles. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Abbeville. Burial will be in St. Paul cemetery in Abbeville. Louisiana Undertaking Co. is in charge of arrangements.

McCULLEY, JOHN RICHARD
March 16, 2002

John Richard McCulley, a retired self-employed mechanic, died March 9 of undetermined causes at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 55. Mr. McCulley was born in Seattle and lived in Gretna for many years. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was a member of the Junior Naval ROTC and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter No. 553 of Gretna. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Anderson McCulley; five sons, James Jones, Joseph Jones, Marlon Green, Brian McCulley and John "Shane" McCulley; five daughters, Tonia Bercide, Nicole Stewart, Katherine Green, Amanda McCulley and Angelique McCulley; his father, Roland McCulley; his stepmother, Mary McCulley; two sisters, Janine Urquahart and Joyce Matsuoka; and five grandchildren. A private funeral will be held. United Funeral Services handled arrangements.

MILES, ANDREW ‘DREW'
March 16, 2002

Andrew "Drew" Miles, a laborer, died March 9 of undetermined causes at Lutheran Nursing Home. He was 48. Mr. Miles was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Gateway Senior High School. Survivors include a son, Andre Skinner; a daughter, Tomeka Bush; his mother, Odeal Johnson; a brother, Frank Miles; four sisters, Frances Miles and Barbara, Debbie and Edora Bush; and two grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Macedonia Deliverance Church, 17590 Highway 933, Galvez. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Desselle Funeral Home in Baton Rouge is in charge of arrangements.

ENGLAND, ALBERTINE
March 16, 2002

Albertine England, a homemaker, died March 7 at her home. She was 84. Ms. England was born in Donaldsonville and lived in Algiers for the past 37 years. She was a former employee of Roosevelt Hotel and a former attendant for the Greyhound bus station. She was a former member of Second Baptist Church. Survivors include eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 10 a.m. at Davis Mortuary Service, 230 Monroe St., Gretna.

DOBARD, SHIRLEY SORDELET
March 16, 2002

Shirley Sordelet Dobard, a former employee of the Housing Authority of New Orleans and retired computer programmer with Missouri Pacific Railroad, died Wednesday at her home. She was 77. Mrs. Dobard was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She graduated from McDonogh No. 35 High School, attended Straight Business College and later earned the designation of certified public accountant. She was formerly employed by Majestic and Standard Life Insurance Companies. She also had been treasurer and chaplain for Louisiana League of Good Government, director of the R.C.I.A. of St. Gabriel Catholic Church and principal of the school of religion. Survivors include her husband, Hubert R. Dobard; one son, Hubert R. Dobard Jr.; two daughters, Valli D. Truehill and Dierdra T. Dobard; one brother, Joseph Sordelet Jr.; and eight grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 4700 Pineda St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Louis No. 3 cemetery. Tharp-Sontheimer-Laudumiey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
