Sarah Williams Avist, a homemaker, died Friday at Meadowcrest Hospital. She was 89. Mrs. Avist was born in Boothville and lived in Buras for the past 32 years. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Harbor Catholic Church and a member of the Plaquemines Parish Council on Aging. Survivors include her husband, Oliver Avist; three sons, Harold Avist Sr. of New Orleans, Farrell Avist of Gretna and Larry Avist Sr.; a daughter, Bernitha Avist; a brother, Charles Robertson of Berkley, Calif.; a sister, Theresa Warren of San Francisco; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Port Sulphur. Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 1020 Virgil St., Gretna, and Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery, Gretna.
PIERRE, WEBSTER

Webster Pierre, a retired truck driver, died Tuesday of a heart attack at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 66. He was born in Whitecastle and lived in Kenner for more than 50 years. He attended Kenner Elementary and John H. Martyn High School. He was a founder of a support group at East Jefferson General Hospital and served as a volunteer for nine years. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Bryant; four sons, Gregory Pierre, Graylin Jacobs, and Alvin and Charles Bryant; six daughters, Maxine Frelox, Dorothy Morgan, Mary Ann Gray, Tammie Jacobs, Jackie Pierre and Leslie P. Williams; three brothers, Frank Milton Jr., Donald Pierre of Beltville, Ill., and Harold Pierre of Vacaville, Calif.; four sisters, Elmease Lewis, Doris McCray, Audrey Milton and Marie Campbell; 38 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral was Monday at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 2114 Third St., Kenner. Burial was in St. Marks cemetery in River Ridge. Richardson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
MOORE, DELBERT GORDON JR.

Delbert Gordon Moore Jr., a welder, died Sunday of a heart attack at his home. He was 58. Mr. Moore was born in Marrero and lived in Ponchatoula. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 174 and the Shriners. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Moore; three daughters, Vangie, Vanna and Vanessa Moore; and two sisters, Bernice "Jane" Dease of Converse and Edna Dufour of Marrero. A funeral will be today at noon at Geisler Funeral Home, 300 St. Cherry St., Hammond. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Converse cemetery in Converse.
MADACH, DOUGLAS JAMES

Douglas James Madach, a finance manager for Lamarque Lincoln-Mercury, died Sunday of complications from lymphoma at Memorial Medical Center. He was 48. Mr. Madach was born in Chicago and lived in New Orleans for the past 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Hanson Madach; a daughter, Sophie K. Madach; his father, Michael Joseph Madach of Szeged, Hungary; his mother, Harriett Gustafson of Peoria, Ill.; his stepmother, Patricia Mae Madach of Bel Air, Md.; three sisters, Deborah Manley of Norton, Mass., Cheryl M. Adams of Bel Air and Michelle Owens of Naperville, Ind.; and a half-brother, Steve Gustafson of Griffith, Ind. A private memorial service was held Monday. Bultman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Breeland Lindsey, a homemaker, died Sunday of undetermined causes at her home. She was 65. Mrs. Lindsey was born in Roseland and was a longtime resident of Pearl River. Survivors include a son, Ronald Lindsey; four daughters, Patricia Myers and Belinda, Pam and Deanna Lindsey; a sister, Betty Abernathy; and eight grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home, 67525 Louisiana 41, Pearl River. Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Hickory Memorial Gardens in Pearl River.

Antonio Hernandez, a driver for ACME Trucking Co., died Saturday of a heart attack at his home. He was 48. Mr. Hernandez was born in Cuba and lived in Waggaman for many years. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Marrero. Survivors include his wife, Carmen Carrasco Hernandez; three sons, David, Alexander and Antonio Hernandez Jr.; his father, Ysidro, Alexis and Ysidro Hernandez; and two sisters, Ana DeSalbo and Adrianna Hernandez. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 West Bank Expressway, Harvey. Visitation will be today from 6 p.m. to midnight and Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Gretna.

Nathaniel Griffin Sr., a retired truck driver, died Sunday at University Hospital. He was 78. Mr. Griffin was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include his companion, Celestine Matthews; a son, Nathaniel Griffin Jr.; and a brother, Lester Griffin. John Michael "Jack" Flynn, a retired owner and operator of a truck sales and service company, died Sunday of cancer at his home. He was 75. Mr. Flynn was born in New Orleans and lived in Covington. He graduated from Jesuit High School and Loyola University Law School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors included his wife, Kathleen Joyce Picou Flynn; three sons, Kevin, Brian and Michael Flynn; four daughters, Diana Breen, Kathy Fresko, Mary Campo and Patricia Parr; and 16 grandchildren. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 20370 Smith Road, Covington. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mary Queen of Peace cemetery in Covington. Col. Joseph O. Fitzgerald, a retired Air Force colonel, died Monday at his home. He was 90. Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Forest and lived in Slidell for the past 37 years. He graduated from Louisiana State University. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, with 32 years of service. He received the Legion of Merit Award. He was a parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. He was a former project manager of the Boeing Aerospace-Michoud Assembly Facility and a retired real estate broker and developer. He was a former board member of the St. Tammany Parish Planning and Zoning Commission and a member of the Slidell Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife, Noelie L. Fitzgerald; a son, John Robert Fitzgerald of Atlanta; two daughters, Marie F. Hughes of Covington and Patricia F. DuBose of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Archie Dale Fitzgerald of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Sadie J. Miller and Lillian F. Hoover, both of Baton Rouge; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 1050 Robert Blvd., Slidell. Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 8 p.m., at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell, and on Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Biloxi National cemetery in Biloxi, Miss.

Garnet Roses Rossi, a retail saleswoman, died Thursday of cancer at her home in Metairie. She was 85. Mrs. Rossi was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 25 years. Survivors include a son, Jerome Rossi; a daughter, Cheryl Rossi Fourroux; a sister, Charlotte Roses; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Helen O'Neill Rosato, a retired office manager at Trapolin Insurance Agency, died Saturday at her daughter's home. She was 96. Ms. Rosato was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 14 years. She graduated from Sophia B. Wright High School and Soule Business College. Survivors include two sons, Deacon J. Ronald and Edward A. Rosato; a daughter, Marilyn R. Hansen; a sister, Ida Bell Keehan; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Ermanno Torquato DiMarzio, owner of Domus Ceramic Tile Corp., died Wednesday at his home. He was 87. Mr. DiMarzio was born in Spoltore, Italy, and lived in New Orleans for the past 54 years. He attended the University of Rome. He was a former senior trade analyst for the Italian Trade Commission. He was an officer in the Italian Air Force during World War II. He was a parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of the Italian-American Bocce Club. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Messina DiMarzio; a son, Gregory DiMarzio; two daughters, Linda Massicot and Lisa Rabito; and three grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 12:30 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Metairie cemetery.

Angelina Guzzardi Alzar, a retired employee at Gus Mayer Department Store, died Thursday at Waldon Healthcare Center. She was 90. Ms. Alzar was born in Houma and lived New Orleans and Metairie for the past 13 years. Survivors include a sister, Rita G. Morales.
