Gwendolyn Angela Caples, 73 years old of Robert, LA, died Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Canon Hospice - Elmwood.

Gwendolyn was born on July, 24 1935 in New Orleans.

Surviving are, Her husband Bobby Jean Caples; daughter, Donna Marie Ottavino; daughters & sons-in-law, Shirley M. Cox and John Cox and Tina Smith McLemore and Mitch McLemore; son & daughter-in-law, Gregg and Elizabeth Smith; brother, Curtis Rome; sisters, Dorothy Traylor and Shirley Burbank; 2 step-daughters, Donna Ross and Becky Thompson; step-sons, Bobby Jean, Randy, Danny and Ronnie Caples; also survived by 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by ; parents, Curtis Rome and Henreitta Durselen Rome; son, Christopher Andre Smith; step-son, Ricky Caples.

Friends will be received Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula, from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M., and on Wednesday from 8:00 A.M. until services.

Services will be held in the funeral home chapel Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 11:00 A.M..

interment will follow in the Holly Gardens Cemetery, Hammond, LA 70401.

Lawrence B. "L. B." Hoover

Lawrence B. "L. B." Hoover, 74 years old of Ponchatoula, Louisiana , died Monday, May 11, 2009, in Heritage Manor Nursing Home. He was born on Monday, July 30, 1934, in Ponchatoula, son of the late John Wesley Hoover and Pearley McClendon Hoover. Mr. Hoover was a charter member of the Ponchatoula Lions Club, and a member of the French Corner Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Ponchatoula High School - Class of 1953. Mr. Hoover was a retired Maintenance Supervisor for Freeport McMoran.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Joyce Penn Hoover; daughter, Gwendolyn Hoover, daughter & son-in-law, Cindy H. and Steve Walters; son & daughter-in-law, Doyle and Lorri Hoover; grandson, Nicholas Rushing; great-granddaughter, Savannah Jade; and a sister, Loice Moore.

He is preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Louis B. and Velma J. Hoover. Friends will be received Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Services will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Charles Bigner and Rev. Eric Hattaway officiating. interment will follow in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Ponchatoula. Contributions may be made to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation - 16013 Halbert Lane - Hammond, LA 70403.

Sarah Geraldine Pitts McLeod

Sarah Geraldine Pitts McLeod, age 76, of Ponchatoula, LA, formerly a long time resident of Gulfport, Passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009 in Covington, LA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Mary Daughdrill, her brothers, Hascall and Monk Daughdrill, a sister, Lorraine Hemba, and her husband, James McLeod

She is survived by 3 children Jerry Michael Pitts and wife Irene of Hammond, LA, Donald Ray Pitts and wife Sylvia of Ponchatoula and Kevin Lee Pitts and wife Brandy of Perkinston, 2 siblings, Elaine Hatten of Houston, TX and James "Popeye" Daughdrill of Carnes, MS, 9 Grandchildren, Evan Pitts, Tiffany Pitts, Melanie Pitts, Marcus Pitts, Julianne Pitts, Kristen Pitts, Lauren Pitts, Lindsey Pitts and Mikeah Pitts, and 3 great- grandchildren, Aliah Pitts, Noah Pitts and Bella Pitts.

She was a former Member of Temple Baptist Church and spent 30 years in newspaper delivery with the Sun Herald in the Orange Grove area. Her hobbies were ceramics and gardening and spending time with her family.

The funeral service was held at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, on Monday, May 11, 2009, at 7 PM where friends visited from 5:00 - 7:00 PM

A graveside service will be Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 10:30 AM in Bounds Cemetery, Carnes, MS.

Vernon Lawrence Melville, Sr.

Vernon Lawrence Melville, Sr., 87, of Ponchatoula, Passed away at his home on Saturday, May 9, 2009.

Mr. Melville was born to the late Leon & Mae Belle Melville, June 24, 1921, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. He served in the United States Army in Europe as a medic during World War II. After his return from service, he owned and operated Melville's Grocery, in Newellton, Louisiana for 38 years until his retirement. He moved to Ponchatoula in March 2006.

He attended the Westchurch Church of Christ in Hammond. He loved carpentry, playing games with his children and grandchildren, and his dog, Hershey. He spent much of his spare time assembling an extensive collection of photographs of his immediate and extended family.

Survivors include his two daughters, Linda Thompson of Ponchatoula, and Teresa Welch of Hammond; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles and James Melville; six sisters, Lavada Long, Helen Cottrell, Llewlyn Gassaway, Lorraine Rucker, Joyce Mae Bond, and Margaret LaRoe.

He was preceded in death by his son, Vernon Lawrence Melville, Jr.; three brothers, David, Harvey Lee, and Garland Melville; three sisters, Dorothy Melville, Annie Ruth Myers, and Louise Crane.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Church of Christ in Saint Joseph, Louisiana from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 12:00 Noon.

Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton, Louisiana .

Angela Marie Nations Smith

Angela Marie Nations Smith, age 47 died on May 9 at her residence in Tickfaw. She was born on Aug. 12, 1961 and was a native of Tickfaw.

Survivors include her husband, Charles D. Smith, Sr., son, Charles D. Smith, Jr., daughter, Robin Smith; 5 grandchildren, Brandon Smith, Mercedes Watkins, Kayla Watkins, James Smith and Clayton Smith; one niece, Patricia Nations; one nephew, Joseph Nations ; 3 grandnieces and 2 grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alford Richard Nations and Sally Anthony Nations; sister, Patricia Ann Nations and grandson, Blake Ray Smith.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation services on Tuesday , May 12 at Little River Pentecostal Church from 5 pm until 10 pm and on Wednesday at the church after 9 am until the religious services at 12 noon conducted by Rev. Adrian Spikes.

interment will follow in Little River Pentecostal Church Cemetery.

Willie L. Ashton

Willie L. Ashton, 84, of Hammond, LA died at his residence on Wednesday, May 7, 2009.

He is survived by wife Juanita Ashton. He is survived by four daughters: Jessie Ashton Smith (Webster, Texas ), Curley Ashton Browning (Stevson)(Waco, Texas ), Debra Ashton Dimes (Webster, Texas ), and Lillian Ashton Scott ( Texas City). He is also survived by sons Willie L. Ashton (Galveston, TX), Joe L. Ashton (Yvanne) Texas , Norman L. Ashton ( Texas City), Napoleon Ashton (Webster, Texas ), Royal Ashton ( Texas City), William Ashton ( Texas City), Albert Marshall (Hammond, LA). He is also survived by 30 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren and 48 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Macedonia Baptist Church in Hammond on Wednesday from 3-8 p.m.

Visitation will also be at N.A. James Funeral Home from 1-3 p.m on Wednesday. The funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Macedonia Baptist Church. It will be conducted by Rev. Moses Gordon. interment will be in Holly Gardens Cemetery in Hammond.

Robert Cole

Robert Cole, age 45 died on May 10, 2009 at Kentwood Manor Nursing Home. He was a native of Hammond; a veteran of the US Army and a house painter. Survivors include brothers, Eddie and Wayne Baham; sister, Diane Baham, and cousins, Ray and Scott Baham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Sally Parker Cole.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation on Thursday, May 14 from 10 am until 12 Noon at Geisler Funeral Home in Hammond. Burial will take place in Ponemah Cemetery, Bogalusa, LA.
