John Sistare, 60; Digital manager taught at WPI

WATERFORD, Conn.- John Sistare, 60, of Waterford, formerly of Auburn, Mass., died Thursday, March 21, at home after a year-long battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 38 years, Beverly (Wilson) Sistare; two sons, Steven Sistare of Westford, Mass., and Peter Sistare of Crofton, Md.; a daughter, Nicole Leet of Milford, Mass.; a brother, Foster K. Sistare Jr. of Waterford; a stepsister, Susan Sawyer of Lakewood, Colo.; a stepbrother, Alan Cooper of Boise, Idaho; and five grandchildren. His stepmother, Lillian (Momm) Cooper Sistare, predeceased him. He was born in New London, son of Foster K. and Eleanor (Momm) Sistare, and lived in Massachusetts before moving to Waterford in 1994. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from WPI in Worcester, Mass., in 1963 and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from University of Connecticut in 1965.
Mr. Sistare taught several years at WPI. He also was an engineer and manufacturing manager at Digital Equipment Corp. for 19 years. He enjoyed carpentry and boating.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. BROOKFIELD- Margaret A. (Gregson) Smith, 80, of 4 Grove St., a retired bank manager, died Sunday, March 24, in the Meadows of Leicester.
She leaves her husband of 61 years, Francis R. Smith Sr.; a son, Francis R. Smith Jr. of North Brookfield; a daughter, Priscilla A. Robbie of North Brookfield; a brother, Clyde B. Gregson Jr. of Vermont; a sister, Marion Chaffee of Brookfield and Florida; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A sister, Ina Peebles of Blandford, predeceased her. She was born in Brookfield, daughter of Clyde B. and Lulu L. (Weeks) Gregson, and graduated from Brookfield High School.
Mrs. Smith was manager for Guarantee Bank in Leicester, retiring in 1964.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Pillsbury Funeral Home Inc., PO Box 238, North Brookfield, is directing arrangements.

HUDSON- Nellie A. (Berry) Smith, 102, formerly of Hudson, died Monday, March 25, in Westridge Health Care Center, Marlboro.
Her husband, Walter Smith, died in 1964. She leaves a son, Albert W. Smith of Vachon, Wash.; a grandson; nieces and nephews. She was born in Lawrence, daughter of John and Mary (Vautrey) Berry, and lived in Hudson most of her life.
Mrs. Smith worked for many years at the former Wattaquadock Mill. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she served on many committees, sang in the choir, and often was a substitute organist. She was an avid Red Sox fan.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 30, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Wood Square. Burial will be in Forestvale Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 339, Hudson, MA 01749. FORT PIERCE, Fla.- Lucy (Napoli) Solitro, 92, of Fort Pierce, formerly of West Boylston, Mass., died Monday, March 18, in Mariner Health Care, Port St. Lucie, after an illness.
Her husband of 66 years, Michael J. Solitro, died in 1994. She leaves two sons, Robert A. Solitro of Fort Pierce and William R. Solitro of Smokey Mountains, Tenn.; a sister, Madeline Sullivan of Texas; 11 grandchildren, including three granddaughters, whom she raised, Karen L. Solitro of Willow Springs, N.C., Deborah A. Bashaw of Dexter, Maine, and Sharon A. Murphy of Worcester, Mass.; 22 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Michael J. Solitro Jr., and two sisters, Mary Ferrandino and Philomena Manna, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Sabatino Napolitano and Anna Siana Nacy, and lived most of her life in West Boylston.
Mrs. Solitro was a machine operator at Androck Co. before retiring. She was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Church. She enjoyed crocheting, singing and baking.
The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 1 in Our Lady of Good Council Church, 11 Worcester St., West Boylston. Cremation was in Florida. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston. There are no calling hours.

WORCESTER -- Barbara A. (Richardson) Spence, 67, of 15 Green Farms Road, a school department employee, died Tuesday, March 19, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 26 years, William H. Spence; two stepsons, William S. Spence of Worcester and Gary R. Spence of Chester, Pa.; a sister, Dolores Thompson of Worcester; nephews and nieces. A brother, Roland "Buddy" Richardson, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Roland A. and Hazel (DeWitt) Richardson, and graduated from Commerce High School. She served in the Air Force and 20 years in the Army Reserve, during which time she was involved in communications support for FEMA.
Mrs. Spence was an accounts payable clerk for the city's school department. She previously worked at Worcester Boys Trade School and as a senior clerk for the Worcester Assessors office. She was also a licensed master barber. She was a member of Belmont Street A.M.E. Zion Church and president of its usher board; a member, past commander and adjutant of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 312 and was involved with its Ladies Auxiliary; and was a member of the Armed Services Committee for the city.
The funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, in Belmont A.M.E. Zion Church, 21 Belmont St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. BOCA RATON, Fla.- Paul St. Jean, 71, of Boca Raton, formerly of Millbury, Mass., and Sutton, Mass., died Thursday, March 28, in Boynton Beach.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Claire (Pechie) St. Jean; two daughters, Diane King and Karen Hingson, both of Boca Raton; a son, Alan St. Jean of Dunellon; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
Mr. St. Jean worked at Glen Eagle Country Club for 11 years. He was an auxiliary police officer in Boca Raton and coached Little League. He was a member of the Elks Club and a founding member of Ascension Church. He was a baseball and football fan.
The funeral service and burial were held in Florida. GARDNER- M. Dorothy (Johnson) St. John, 77, of 58 Summit Ave., died Sunday, March 24, in Heywood Hospital after being stricken ill at home.
She leaves her husband of 57 years, Morel O. St. John; two daughters, Ruth E. Jacobs of Hollis, N.H., and Donna R. Irons of South Royalston; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was born in Gardner, daughter of Otto A. and Ida M. (Aarkko) Johnson, and graduated from Gardner High School.
Mrs. St. John was a former Gardner City Councilor-At-Large in the 1960s. For many years, she was a recreational therapist at the former Gardner State Hospital. During World War II, she served in the Navy.
She enjoyed traveling and cooking, and for several years operated her own Meals on Wheels.
The funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St. Calling hours are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

WORCESTER -- Stephen Stuka, 91, of 50 Pine View Ave., a former shipper and receiver, died Sunday, March 24, in Providence Extended Care Center after an illness.
He leaves his wife, Rita (Blais) Stuka; a son, Paul S. Stuka of Medfield; three brothers, Boleslaws Sztuka of Warren, Tadeus J. Sztuka of Worcester and Walter J. Sztuka Jr. of Auburn; three sisters, Ann Aksten and Helen Painchaud, both of Worcester, and Sophie Pogorzelski of Millbury; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Joseph J., John W. and Stanley S. Sztuka, predeceased him. He was born in Lublin, Poland, son of Walter J. Sztuka Sr. and Amelia (Klutka) Sztuka, and lived many years in Worcester.
Mr. Stuka was a shipper and receiver for 35 years at Handy Manufacturing Co. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church and played the clarinet and saxophone for several local bands.
The funeral will be held Thursday, March 28, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave. (www.oconnorbrothers.com), with a Liturgy of the Word at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. WORCESTER -- Lauralee (Sheehan) Stevenson, 44, of 9 Kosta St., died Sunday, March 17, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 15 years, Wallace A. Stevenson; her mother, Connie (Barbera) Sheehan of Shrewsbury; two brothers, Wayne E. Sheehan of Denver and Keith A. Sheehan of Maynard; a sister, Cheryl L. Collard of Shrewsbury; two nieces and a nephew. She was born in Cambridge, daughter of the late Robert N. Sheehan, and lived in Northboro before moving here 15 years ago. She graduated from Assabet Valley High School, Marlboro.
Mrs. Stevenson worked the past 12 years for Sodexo, Shrewsbury.

DENNIS -- Oiva W. Suominen, 85, of South Dennis, formerly of Worcester, a World War II veteran and a retired home builder, died Friday, March 29, in EPOCH Senior Healthcare, Brewster.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Geraldine (Parker) Suominen; two daughters, Daryl Watson of Maui, Hawaii, and Lori Suominen of Rumford, R.I.; two grandsons; and three nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Matti and Aina Suominen. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served at General Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand.
Mr. Suominen was a custom home builder until retiring. He was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Worcester, where he was active with the Junior and Senior choirs and the Mendelssohn Singers for 25 years. He was a charter member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Harwich, where he handcrafted the altar, pulpit and baptismal font. He was a member of Dennis Pines Golf Club and enjoyed square dancing at Baypath Barn in Boylston and with the Cape Cod Chowder Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Cape Cod Shrine Club, Aleppo Temple, Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Boston and Mount Horeb Lodge of Masons.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137, East Harwich. There are no calling hours.
