Philip F. Elwell, 87

ATHOL - Philip F. Elwell, 87, of 620 North Orange Road, a veteran of World War II, died Wednesday, June 5, in Athol Memorial Hospital.

His wife of 55 years, Charlotte T. (Wright) Elwell, died in 1998. He leaves a son, Philip H. Elwell of Athol; a daughter, Kathleen N. Metevier of Athol; a brother, Richard Frye of Bourne; three sisters, Emma Crooker of Dennis, Edith Pooler of Halifax and Patricia Anderson of East Weymouth; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Howard Frye, William Frye and Harlan Elwell, predeceased him. He was born in Lowell, son of Willard and Maude (Sullivan) Elwell, and lived in the Rockland area for many years. He graduated from Hanover High School in 1933. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe. He lived in Athol for 52 years.

Mr. Elwell worked at Erving Paper Mills for 30 years before retiring, and was a member of its Century Club. He enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the country.

The graveside service, with military honors, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, in Silver Lake Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Athol Memorial Hospital Tribune Fund, 2033 Main St., Athol, MA 01331; or to the Athol Fire Dept. EMS, 206 Exchange St., Athol, MA 01331. Higgins - O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Anna Fiske, 85, company floor manager

NORTHBORO - Anna (Subolosky) Fiske, 85, formerly of Colonial Village, died Wednesday, June 12, in Sudbury Pines Extended Care, Sudbury, after an illness.

Her husband, Richard H. Fiske, died in 1965. She leaves two sons, Richard H. Fiske Jr. of Northboro and Robert W. Fiske of Narragansett, R.I.; three daughters, Barbara Francis of Millbury, Jean D'Angelo of Marlboro and Helen Griffin of Northboro; 14 grandchildren; eight great - grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A sister, Helen Beland, died last year. She was born in Northboro, daughter of Joseph and Victoria (Sawicki) Subolosky.

Mrs. Fiske was the floor manager at E.F. Laurence Candle Factory for many years. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church.

A funeral Mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in St. Rose of Lima Church, 244 West Main St. Burial will be in Howard Street Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, in Leland - Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St.

Antena A. Gale, 86

ATHOL - Antena A. (Kanash) Gale, 86, of 481 Brooks Road, died Monday, June 3, in Quabbin Valley Healthcare after a brief illness.

Her husband, Herbert Gale, died in 1994. She leaves a brother, Albert Kanash of Athol; a nephew, Bruce Kanash of Millers Falls; a grandniece and two grandnephews. She was born in Athol, daughter of Anthony and Pauline (Aidikonis) Kanash, and lived here most of her life. She also lived nine years in Charlotte, N.C., before returning to Athol in 1995. She graduated from Athol High School in 1934.

Mrs. Gale worked 25 years for L.S. Starrett Co., retiring in 1969. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, its Women's Guild and the Athol Golden Agers. She enjoyed traveling.

The funeral will be held Thursday, June 6, from J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St. (www.murphysfuneralhome.com), with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 105 Main St. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. A calling period is 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday, June 6, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Church Building Fund, 105 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.

Robert H. Gemme, 78
Sunday, June 09, 2002

FITCHBURG - Robert H. Gemme, 78, of 288 Franklin Road, died Saturday, June 8, at home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Lucille M. (Allen) Gemme; a son, Dr. Allan R. Gemme of Leominster; a daughter, Donna M. LeBlanc of Fitchburg; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Raymond and Lionel Gemme, and a sister, Cecile Gordon, predeceased him. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Ludger and Maria (Dion) Gemme. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe.

He worked 32 years for James River Paper Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1982. He was previously an expert wallpaper hanger and painter.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 11, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 46 Woodland St. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 10, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diversified Visiting Hospice Nurses, 275 Nichols Road, Fitchburg, MA 01420.

Adam J. Jonielunas, 82
Saturday, June 08, 2002

WORCESTER - Adam J. Jonielunas, 82, of 4 Pocasset St., a retired letter carrier and a veteran of World War II, died Tuesday, June 4, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Margaret A. (Langrish) Jonielunas; a son, Neil Jonielunas in Arizona; three daughters, Barbara Ayer and Susan Jonielunas, both of Worcester, and Patricia Swartz of Adrian, Mo.; and four grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Simon and Veronica (Karpowich) Jonielunas, and graduated from Classical High School. He was Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.

He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Casimir's Church.

The funeral and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Casimir's Building Fund, 41 Providence St., Worcester, MA 01604. Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., is directing arrangements.

Sister Kalinowski, 86

PHILADELPHIA - Sister Mary Leonard Kalinowski, 86, of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, formerly of Charlton, Mass., known in secular life as Bernice Kalinowski, died Friday, May 17, in the Mount Nazareth Home.

She leaves two sisters, Helen M. Walker of Auburn, Mass., and Mary A. Ranck of Sparks, Nev.; nephews and nieces. Three sisters, Sister Mary Fidelis, Stasia Norquist and Stephanie Niccolls; and a brother, John Kalinowski, predeceased her. She was born in Charlton, daughter of Wladyslaw L. and Suzanna A. (Kulesza) Kalinowski. She attended Classical High School in Worcester before beginning her religious life as a postulant in 1934. She entered the novitiate in Torresdale, Pa. in 1935, and professed her first vows in 1937, and her final vows in 1943. She received a bachelor's degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., in 1955, and later received a master's degree from Villanova University in 1967.

Sister Kalinowski spent 19 years in elementary education in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, and 24 years in two Philadelphia high schools. In 1980, she retired from teaching and became assistant to the treasurer at Holy Family College, retiring in 2000.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in St. Boniface Church, 817 Massachusetts Ave., Lunenburg.

Joseph E. Kramarz, 74
Thursday, June 13, 2002

BELLINGHAM - Joseph E. Kramarz, 74, of 91 Newland Ave., died Tuesday, June 11, at home.

He leaves his wife, Virginia (Lee) Kramarz; a son, Karl J. Kramarz of Blackstone; his mother, Cheslawa (Niebrodowski) Kramarz of Webster; two brothers, including Jack Kramarz of Dudley; and a granddaughter. A brother predeceased him. He was born in Moodus, Conn. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Kramarz was a production control clerk for 32 years at General Motors, Framingham, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Memory Lanes in Woonsocket, R.I., the GM Retiree Group and the Bellingham Senior Center. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and bowling.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, in Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket. Burial will be in Scott Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 13, in the funeral home.

Bernard L. Lajoie, 58
Monday, June 10, 2002

TEMPLETON - Bernard L. "Tanker" Lajoie, 58, of 147 South Road, a retired state trooper, died Friday, June 7, in Heywood Hospital, Gardner, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Janet (Kimball) Lajoie; three sons, Michael B. Lajoie of Templeton, Gerry L. Lajoie of Rutledge, Pa., and David A. Lajoie of the Jefferson section of Holden; a brother, Roland H. Lajoie of Gardner; a sister, Janet G. Clark of Gardner; a granddaughter; nephews and nieces. He was born in Gardner, son of Leo and Henrietta (Brouillet) Lajoie, and graduated from Gardner High School in 1962, where he was a member of the football team. He served in the Air Force from 1963 to 1967 and graduated from the State Police Academy in 1968.

Mr. Lajoie was a police officer with the Townsend Police Department before becoming a Massachusetts state trooper. He served 31 years with the state police, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Artisan Lodge of Masons, Winchendon, having served as lodge master. He enjoyed gardening.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 79 Cross St., Gardner. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, in Lamoureux - Fletcher Community Funeral Home, 105 Central St., Gardner (www.fletcherfuneralhomes.com), with a Masonic service by Artisan Lodge of Masons at 8 p.m. Flowers may be sent, or donations made to Always and Forever Memorial and Honor Program, Attention: ADA Web, PO Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Edward J. LeBlanc, 71

GARDNER - Edward J. LeBlanc, 71, of 43 Cross St. Ext., a retired shipper and receiver, died Tuesday, June 11, at home after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, Noella (Cormier) LeBlanc; two sons, Alonzo and Ernest LeBlanc, both of Gardner; a sister, Irma Cormier of Moncton, New Brunswick; four grandchildren; two great - granddaughters; nephews and nieces. A son, Eddie LeBlanc of Gardner, died in 1996. He was born in Notre Dame, New Brunswick, son of Thomas and Josephine (Allain) LeBlanc.

Mr. LeBlanc was a shipper and receiver for Digital Manufacturing Co., Westminster, for 14 years, retiring in 1990. He previously had worked at Heywood - Wakefield Co. He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church and the Acadien Social Club.

The funeral will be held Thursday, June 13, from Boucher Funeral Home Inc., 110 Nichols St., with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. A calling hour is 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 6 Strathmore Road, Natick, MA 01760; or to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.

George F. Lees, 64

WESTBORO - George F. Lees, 64, of 37 Robin Road, died Wednesday, June 12, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center, Worcester, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife of 36 years, Beverly J. (Harpster) Lees; two daughters, Lynn E. Webster of Westboro and Dawn C. Alexander of Inverness, Fla.; a sister, Anne E. Revene of Westboro; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A granddaughter died last year. A brother, James Lees of Westboro, and a sister, Dorothy Mongeau of Grafton, predeceased him. He was born in Framingham, son of A. Joseph and Anna (Meighan) Lees, and lived most of his life in Westboro. He graduated from Westboro High School in 1956.

Mr. Lees worked in the shipping department, and was also a truck driver, for Bay State Abrasives Co., retiring in 1999 after 40 years with the company.

He was a member of St. Luke the Evangelist Church, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus John Boyle O'Reilly Council 85. He was a former member of the Army National Guard, and umpired senior and junior softball leagues many years.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, in First Community Church of Southboro, 137 Southville Road, Southboro. Burial will be in St. Luke's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 16, in Britton - Summers Funeral Home, 4 Church St. Donations may be made to Memorial Fund, First Community Church of Southboro, 137 Southville Road, Southboro, MA 01772.
