Manuel J. "Young" Santos, 77, of New Bedford died February 14, 2004 at home after a long illness.

He was the husband of Cynthia A. Santos, and son of the late Joseph and Joanna (Monteiro) Santos.

Mr. Santos was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a member of the Revival & Deliverance Praise and Worship Center.

He was formerly employed as a construction worker for J.J. O'Brien Construction Company until his retirement.

Mr. Santos served in the U.S. Army. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Curtis Grace, and his wife Kim Pina Grace, of Wareham, David Santos of New Bedford and Corey Santos of Providence, RI; 4 daughters, Rosemary Miranda of Boston, Cheri Santos and Tammy Souto, and her husband Wayne, all of New Bedford, Shelley Santos of Fairhaven; a brother, Raymond Santos of Chicago, Illinois; 2 sisters, Theolinda Mary Battle, and her husband Charles, of Boston and Sylvania Vieira, and her husband Napoleon, of Wareham; his mother-in-law, Anna (Lopes) Grace of New Bedford; 4 sisters-in-law, Betty Fernandes, Sharon Magnett, Brenda Duarte and Donna Grace, all of New Bedford; a brother-in-law, James Grace of New Bedford; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Minnie Pires.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Wednesday, February 18th at 11 AM.

Visiting hours Tuesday, February 17th from 5-9 PM.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.

Christina Martin
February 02, 2004

Christina Martin, 53, of New Bedford died February 2, 2004 unexpectedly at home.

She was the daughter of the late Christopher Martin.

She was born in New Bedford and lived in New Bedford all of her life.

Survivors include a daughter, Teasha Pauline of New Bedford; a son, Shawn Pauline of Florida; a step-daughter Kristine Fortin of New Bedford; a step-son, Jamie Desroches of Germany; 6 grandchildren including Christina Martin, Angelique Bumpus and Christopher Bumpus.

Her Funeral Service was private.

Eileen G. Lafleur
February 16, 2004

Eileen G. (Costa) Lafleur, 60, of New Bedford died February 16, 2004 at Kristen Beth Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Joseph Lafleur.

Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Sylvia) Costa, she had lived in New Bedford for most of her life.

She loved animals.

Survivors include her husband; a son, David Foote of New Bedford; a daughter, Joann Shurtleff, and her husband Peter, of New Bedford; a brother, Robert Costa of Fall River; 2 grandchildren, Kaite Ann Shurtleff and Kerri Ann Shurtleff; and a godson, Norman Lavoie, Jr.; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was the grandmother of the late James Raymond Foote.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Thursday, February 19th at 11 AM.

Visiting hours Wednesday, February 18th 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

Interment Riverside Cemetery.

Cecile Silveira
February 08, 2004

Cecile (Allain) Silveira, 80, of New Bedford died on February 8, 2004 unexpectedly at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Ronald Silveira.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Thaddeus and Rose (LeBlanc) Allain, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.

Mrs. Silveira was formerly employed by U.S. Ringbinder for many years until her retirement.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of St. Mary's Ladies Guild.

She was a member of of the Royal Travelers and enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading.

Survivors include her husband; 2 sons, Robert Silveira, and his wife Barbara, of Plymouth and William Silveira, and his wife Debra, of Lakeville; 5 brothers, Zoel Allain, Omer Allain, Arthur Allain and Paul Allain, all of New Bedford and René Allain of Acushnet; 2 granddaughters, Jennifer Silveira and Nicole Silveira; several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Frank Allain and David Allain.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Thursday, February 12th at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd., at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Wednesday, February 11th from 4-8 PM.

Interment Pine Grove Cemetery.

Joanne Rapoza
April 07, 2004

Joanne (Silva) Rapoza, 73, of New Bedford died Wednesday April 7, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late John Rapoza.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Clarence and Anna (Rose) Silva, she had lived in New Bedford all of her life.

She was formerly employed at Cornell-Dubilier Electronics until her retirement.

Mrs. Rapoza loved her cats and trips to Foxwoods. She enjoyed playing Bingo and shopping, and most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include 4 sons, David J. Rapoza, and his wife Darlene, Stephen M. Rapoza, John Rapoza and his girlfriend Lisa Morgado, and Kenneth J. Rapoza, and his fiancée Paula Casey, all of New Bedford; a daughter, Toni A. Carvalho, and husband Jorge, of Dartmouth; a brother, Clarence Silva of New Bedford; a sister, Barbara Frates of Fairhaven; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nephews.

She was the mother of the late Robert W. Rapoza.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Monday April 12, 2004 at 10 AM. Funeral Mass at St. James Church at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday April 11, 2004 from 5-8 PM. Burial in Cushing Cemetery, Mattapoisett, will be private.

Eva Burgo
April 07, 2004

Eva (Pinto) Burgo, 84, of New Bedford died Wednesday April 7, 2004 at St. Luke's Hosptial after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Waldemar G. Burgo.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Caesar and Virginia (Monteiro) Pinto, she had lived in New Bedford for all of her life.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.

Mrs. Burgo was formerly employed as a nurse's aide at Sacred Heart Home. She had also been a foster grandparent for Headstart and PACE.

Mrs. Burgo was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Each year she enjoyed watching the Cape Verdean Recognition Day parade with her family and friends while also celebrating her birthday on July 4th.

Survivors include 7 sons, Waldemar Burgo of Plymouth, Donald Burgo of San Bernardino, CA, and Elario Burgo, Lester Burgo, Anterio Burgo, Maurice Burgo and Marcio Burgo, all of New Bedford; 4 daughters, Eugenia Lomba of Orlando, Fla., Eleanor Duarte of New Bedford, Alice Fields-Walker of Altadena, CA, and Linda Pinto of Dighton; a sister, Alice Pinto DeCruz of New Bedford; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Leonard Burgo, and sister of the late Mae Dantas, Lillian Gomes, Emma Bell, Roy Pinto, Edwin Pinto, Eugene Pinto and George Pinto.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Saturday April 10, 2004 at 7 AM. Funeral Liturgy and Final Commendation at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 8 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Friday April 9, 2004 from 5-9 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Harley J. Poling
April 02, 2004

Harley J. Poling, 77, of New Bedford died Friday April 2, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley L. (Pastie) Poling.

Born and raised in Sidney, Ohio, the son of the late Harley and May (Beers) Poling, he lived in New Bedford since 1949.

He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Mr. Poling was formerly employed as a waiter for various restaurants and catering services in the New Bedford area. He later was a driver for handicapped students and adults in this area.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Paula Nobrega and her husband James of New Bedford; a son, Thomas Poling and his wife Doris of Trophy Club, Texas; a brother, Thomas Poling of Sidney, Ohio; a sister, Clarabelle Brockway of Kingman, Arizona; four grandchildren, Jennifer Nobrega, Ashley Poling, Angela Poling, and Austin Poling; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Mildred Siegel, Kenneth Poling, and Naomi Shaffer.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday April 7, 2004 at 11 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Wednesday morning 9-10:30 AM prior to the Funeral Mass.

Thomas S. Hart
March 23, 2004

Thomas Spellman Hart, 57, of Boston died Tuesday March 23, 2004 at home.

Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late George J. and Mary J. (Manning) Hart, he lived in California for many years and in Boston for the past five years.

Mr. Hart was formerly employed as a computer programmer in the insurance industry in California.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include a sister, Judith Lemay of New Bedford; a brother, William G. Hart of Providence, RI; two nieces; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Private Committal Service was held on Wednesday morning April 7, 2004 in the Veterans Plot at Rural cemetery in New Bedford. Visiting hours were omitted.

Dalpha R. Lavallee
April 08, 2004

Dalpha R. Lavallee, 89, of New Bedford died Thursday April 8, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Irene (Lada) Lavallee.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Arthur J. and Rose A. (Nerbonne) Lavallee, he had lived in New Bedford for all of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister for many years and was a member of the Choir.

Mr. Lavallee was formerly employed as an upholsterer for the Auto Top Shop.

Mr. Lavallee was a member of American Legion Post One. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a recipient of the American Theater ribbon, the American Defense medal and the World War II Victory medal. He later served in the Army Reserves before retiring at the rank of Captain in 1974. During the 1930's, he had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Wyoming.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Peter D. Lavallee, and his wife Janice, of San Diego, CA, and Mark A. Lavallee of New Bedford; 3 sisters, Bernadette Loveridge of New Bedford, Claire Mosgofian of Natick and Yvonne Smith of Falls Church, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Tuesday April 13, 2004 at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday April 12, 2004 from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Shirley M. Monteiro
April 03, 2004

Shirley M. (Dutra) Monteiro, 74, of New Bedford died Saturday April 3, 2004 at Brandon Woods after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Edward Monteiro.

A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late John and Rita (Botelho) Dutra.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

Mrs. Monteiro was formerly employed as a stitcher at Monarch Manufacturing and Sharpie's Manufacturing until her retirement.

Mrs. Monteiro was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 914. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed dancing at the Sixth Bristol Club.

Survivors include a son, Russell Simpkin of California; 2 daughters, Rita Struchen of Georgia, and Gail Martin of Florida; 3 granddaughters; 7 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Dorothy Souza, Eddie Dutra, John Dutra, and Bernice Georgadarellis, who was her twin.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Monday April 5, 2004 at 9:30 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Sunday April 4, 2004 from 4-8 PM. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
