Winifred P. O'Connell, 87

Hyannis - Winifred P. (Sullivan) O'Connell, 87, a retired teacher and Cape resident for the past 24 years, died Aug. 8, 2000, at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.

She was the wife of the late Brendan A. O'Connell.

Born in Lynn, Mrs. O'Connell lived in West Roxbury for 40 years before moving to Hyannis 24 years ago. She was a Boston elementary school teacher for 30 years until her retirement.

Mrs. O'Connell was a member of the Boston University Alumni Association, American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and the Thereserians. She was past president of the Mount Alvernia's Mothers Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Winifred D. Connelly of Marshfield; a sister, Marie Balestra of Falmouth; and two grandchildren.

Antone M. Souza, 85

Mashpee - Antone M. Souza, 85, a longtime Cape resident, died Aug. 8, 2000, at the Hospice House in Barnstable after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Arlene E. (MacRae) Souza.

Born in the Azores, Portugal, Mr. Souza moved to the United States as a young boy. He was a longtime resident of Santuit, having built his first home there. He later moved to Hyannisport before retiring and building a home in Mashpee.

Mr. Souza learned the carpentry trade as a young man, spending more than 40 years as a master carpenter and craftsman. He built many homes and worked on hundreds of carpentry projects on the Cape and in New England.

Besides his carpentry trade, he was a master handyman, fixing everything from bicycles to fences. He enjoyed tinkering with home projects after his retirement.

Surviving are two sons, John W. Souza of Boston and Robert C. Souza of Marstons Mills; six daughters, Pauline Walsh of Wrentham, Carolyn LeGeyt of Mashpee, Glenda Linnell of Centerville, Sandra Souza of Forestdale, Norma Nugent of South Yarmouth and Beverly McAulliffe of Hyannis; 21 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice House, 88 Railroad Ave., Barnstable, MA 02630.

Edward R. Sullivan, 58

Martsons Mills - Edward R. Sullivan, 58, of Marstons Mills, died Aug. 9, 2000, at his home.

He was the husband of Elizabeth W. McAdams.

Mr. Sullivan was born in Boston. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the Navy in Antarctica. He was a radar technician with the FAA in North Truro, retiring in 1999.

Mr. Sullivan loved gardening, the outdoors, hiking, biking, canoeing, and his dogs.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Edward Sullivan of North Attleboro; a daughter, Catherine Sullivan of Sandwich; a brother, Daniel Sullivan of Weymouth; and a sister, Josephine Dascanio of Worcester.

Selma E. Clayton, 83

West Hyannisport - Selma E. (Liptzer) Clayton, 83, died Aug. 16, 2000, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of Robert "Bob" Clayton for 63 years, former Boston radio and TV personally.

Before retiring to the Cape with her husband, Mrs. Clayton had been active in prison work as a friendly visitor at MCI Framingham. She helped found the Taping for the Blind project in the Massachusetts prison system and then sponsored several former prisoners during their successful transitions to life in the community.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Arnold Clayton; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A private memorial service will be held on her birthday in October at her home in West Hyannisport.

Frances Donovan, 84

West Yarmouth - Frances (Chant) Donovan, 84, a longtime Cape resident, died Aug. 14, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after an illness.

Born in Worcester, she moved to the Springfield area where she was educated.

She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper. She later moved to Boston, and then to Cape Cod, where she was a resident for the past 44 years.

An Army veteran, she served from 1942 to 1946 and earned the rank of second lieutenant.

She was a past matron of the Springfield Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Christian Science Church of Hyannis.

She was co-owner of the former Beechwood Inn from 1963 to 1975, later known as the Asa Bearse House on Main Street in Hyannis.

Surviving are a daughter, Joanne D. Calderigi of Ludlow; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Retirement Center at Mayflower Place Nursing Center, Buck Island Road, West Yarmouth.

Genevieve M. Hamby, 82

Liverpool, N.Y. - Genevieve M. Hadley Hamby, 82, a former Cape resident, died Aug. 13, 2000, at her home in Liverpool.

Born in Wrentham, Mass., she was a 1936 graduate of Barnstable High School and also graduated from Bryant College in 1938.

She was a secretary for more than 17 years for J.C. Penney Co. Inc. and worked for 14 years at the John H. Mulroy Civic Center.

During World War II, she served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary SPARS.

Surviving are a daughter, Cheryl Rothfield of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Robert of Liverpool; a brother, George P. Hadley of Virginia; and four grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North Street, Liverpool, NY 13088.

William Thomas
Hutchinson, 79

Brockton - William Thomas Hutchinson, 79, formerly of Marstons Mills, died Aug. 17, 2000, at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He had been a resident of the Brockton Veterans Center since 1992.

He was the husband of Marguerite J. (Gunning) Hutchinson for 50 years.

Mr. Hutchinson was a 1939 graduate of North Quincy High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Northeastern University in 1943 and a master's degree in education from Boston University in 1947. At Northeastern, he played on the varsity hockey squad and was selected as a forward on the All New England Intercollegiate hockey team in 1943.

After his college graduation, Mr. Hutchinson served in the Army from 1943 to 1945, and was a lifetime member of the Falmouth DAV.

Mr. Hutchinson taught business and was a guidance counselor at Quincy High School from 1948 until his retirement in 1982, and coached varsity hockey from 1949 to 1965.

He was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Quincy High School Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a well-known Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference official from 1950 to 1970, an ECAC supervisor of officials from 1983 to 1987 and a former treasurer of the Eastern Massachusetts Hockey Officials Association. In 1982, he received the ECAC George L. Shiebler Award in recognition of his dedication to college hockey.

Mr. Hutchinson was director of the Hyannisport Golf Club caddy camp on Cape Cod from 1954 to1977. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Hyannisport Golf Club until he became ill in 1987.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Michael of Cottage Grove, Minn., William P. of Malden, and Peter of Westfield; two daughters, Ann Kelly of Melrose and Sally Burke of Arlington; and six grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Thomas Hutchinson.

Sylvia E. Koose, 85

Osterville - Sylvia E. Koose, 85, a resident of Osterville, died Aug. 14, 2000, at the Center for Optimum Care in Mashpee after a long illness.

Born in Nazareth, Pa., she moved to Quincy as a young girl and graduated from Quincy High School. She received her doctor of laws degree from Portia Law School, now known as New England School of Law, and later studied in the fields of community organization, management and administration at Boston and New York universities.

While pursuing a legal career, she became interested in the management of not-for-profit youth agencies and worked as a district director for the Council for Greater Boston Camp Fire Girls. She also became executive director in 1953 as well as director of Camp Kiwanee, the council's resident camp in Hanson.

In 1961, she moved to New York City and joined the national staff of Camp Fire Girls Inc. as director of its national field office for New England. She became director of field services across the United States in 1964 and was appointed associate national executive director of Camp Fire Girls Inc. in 1971. She served in this capacity until her retirement in 1976 and moved to Cape Cod.

After retirement, she was active in community service, serving as a board member and management consultant. She was a vice president and board member of the United Way of Cape Cod and the Islands and a board member and consultant for Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands. She was a member, past warden and vestry member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville and a board member of both Housing Assistance Corp. and the Financial Development Committee for the town of Barnstable.

She was also a Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International member of the McLean Chapter.

She is survived by a close friend, Gwen Harper of Osterville, with whom she lived.

A memorial celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.

Anne L. MacPherson, 93

Centerville - Anne L. MacPherson, 93, a Cape resident since 1971, died Aug. 14, 2000, at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville after a long illness.

Born and educated in Boston, Ms. MacPherson was a 1923 graduate of St. Peter's High School. She moved to Centerville in 1971 from Belmont.

After completing her education, she became a secretary for the Air Reduction Co. She retired in 1967 after 44 years of service.

Ms. MacPherson was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church and a charter member of the Cape Cod Curling Club. She enjoyed golf and bowling. She is survived by cousins and several nieces and nephews.

Alfred 'Al' Neves, 81

Osterville - Alfred "Al" Neves, 81, an automobile mechanic and longtime Cape resident, died Aug. 17, 2000, at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Cape and Islands in Sandwich.

He was the husband of the late Charlotte (Crane) Neves.

Born in Providence, R.I., Mr. Neves moved to Barnstable at a young age and was educated in Barnstable schools. He served in the Army during World War II.

A well-known auto mechanic, he started with Al Neves City Service in West Yarmouth in 1955 and ran many service stations until retiring in 1986. He still worked on cars in his garage.

Mr. Neves was a founder and past president of the Cape Cod Sports Care Club and the Cape Cod Micro Midget Racing Club. He was a member of the Hyannis Lodge of Elks No. 1549, Dennis Thomas Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hyannis and the West Barnstable Deer Club, where he was past president.

Surviving are a son, Charles F. Neves of South Yarmouth; a brother, Joseph Neves of Centerville; a sister, Mary Balboni of West Yarmouth; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mary C. Pare

Worcester - Mary C. (Joyce) Pare, a former Cape resident for 20 years, died Aug. 17, 2000, at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester.

She was the wife of Dr. Francis M. Pare, who died in 1948.

Born in Worcester, Mrs. Pare lived in Worcester before moving to Centerville in 1976. She returned to Worcester in 1996.

She graduated from the former Sacred Heart Academy and the former St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, both in Worcester.

Mrs. Pare was a social worker for the Worcester Catholic Charities for 22 years until retiring in 1972. She also did private duty nursing for many years.

She was a member of St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph A. Pare of East Dennis and Francis M. Pare of Brookfield; and two grandchildren.
