Mildred E. Mason, 85

Hyannis - Mildred E. (Wetsell) Mason, 85, died Nov. 17, 2000, at the Mayflower Place Nursing Home following a long illness.

She was the wife of Roger S. Mason, who died in 1966.

Mrs. Mason was born, raised and educated in Waltham. She lived in several towns before moving from Manomet to Hyannis in 1956.

She worked for many years as a part-time clerk at the former Buttner's of Hyannis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hyannis and a former active member of the Benevolent Treasure and other church groups.

Surviving are four sons, Ronald S. Mason of Yarmouthport, Robert W. Mason of San Marino, Calif., Richard A. Mason of Boston and Herbert G. Mason of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one niece and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 9 at the First Baptist Church of Hyannis.

Edward L. Miner, 95

Ware - Edward L. Miner, 95, who leaves family on the Cape, died Nov. 28, 2000, at the Life Care Center in Plymouth.

He was the husband of the late Beatrice (Marcil) Miner.

Born in Ware, Mr. Miner was a graduate of Ware High School.

Mr. Miner was a mailman for the U.S. Postal Service in Ware for 35 years, retiring in 1965. He had formerly worked as a bricklayer for many years.

A communicant of All Saints Church, Mr. Miner served as a captain in the State Guard from 1940 to 1946 and was a member of the Ware Golden Agers. He was a Scout master for 25 years, served as a district commissioner and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting.

He had recently lived in Marstons Mills and Plymouth.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean Cook of East Sandwich and Dorothy Beaudry of Marstons Mills; a son, Edward Miner of North Grafton; a sister, Helen Haley of Concord, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mohegan Council, Boy Scouts of America, 19 Harvard St., Worcester, MA 01609; or to the Greyhound Friends Inc., 166 Saddle Hill Road, Hopkinton, MA 01748.

Elisabeth J. Pol-van Wilgenburg, 88

Centerville - Elisabeth Johanna Pol-van Wilgenburg, 88, a resident of Centerville, died Nov. 28, 2000, at her home.

She was the wife of the late Bernardus Josephus Pol.

A native of the Netherlands, she was a resident of Centerville.

Surviving are a son, Bernardus Josephus "Ben" Pol of El Paso, Tex.; a daughter, Gerry "Johanna" Jonsson-Pol of Centerville; a sister, Jo Wouters of the Netherlands; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Christine Carol Post, 52

Baxter, Tenn. - Christine Carol Post, 52, who leaves family on Cape Cod, died unexpectedly Nov. 16, 2000, at Summit Medical Center in Davidson County.

She was the wife of Joseph C. Post for 30 years.

Mrs. Post was born in Norfolk, Va. She was a surgical technology instructor at Tennessee Technology Center in Crossville. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable.

Surviving besides her husband are her parents, Elsie and Christopher DeLane of West Barnstable; two sons, William J. and Edward A. Post of Baxter; two daughters, Suzy M. Post and JoAnne L. Post of Baxter; two brothers, Richard J. DeLane of Rusk, Texas , and Anthony P. DeLane of Hyannis; and two nieces.

Mona Frances Sexton, 85

Pittsfield - Mona Frances Sexton, 85, who lived in Cummaquid since 1980, died Nov. 28, 2000, at Berkshire Medical Center.

She was the wife of the late Lloyd I. Sexton, who died in 1996.

Born in Lawrence, Mrs. Sexton was educated in Reading schools and graduated from Reading High School in 1933. As a youth she was very active in her church, The Church of the Good Shepherd in Reading, attending an International Youth Conference in Cambridge, England.

Mrs. Sexton later worked as a secretary for the Boston Eye and Ear Infirmary. In 1943, she married Lloyd Sexton of West Newton.

In 1980, the Sextons moved to Cummaquid. Earlier this year, Mrs. Sexton moved to the Berkshires.

She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Sexton of Great Barrington, and Thomas Sexton of Bozeman, Mont.; a nephew and four nieces.

Ruth C. Thompson, 76

Centerville - Ruth C. (Gingras) Thompson, 76, a resident of Centerville for more than 50 years, died Nov. 27, 2000, at Hospice House in Barnstable.

She was the wife of Robert D. Thompson.

Born and educated in Fall River, Mrs. Thompson was a certified nurses aide at the Centerville Nursing Home.

She was a member of the AmVets in Hyannis and was a ham radio operator with the civil defense. With her husband she formed Cape Cod Tridents Scuba Diving Club.

Mrs. Thompson played in the town band, was a den mother with Cub Scout Pack 54, was a competitive roller skater and was active in the Drum and Bugle Corps in Fall River.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church, where she sang in the choir.

During World War II, she worked making torpedoes.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mary McDonough of Marstons Mills; a son, Robert D. Thompson Jr. of East Sandwich; a brother, George H. Gingras Jr. of Somerset; a sister, Vera Snow of West Yarmouth; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also the mother of the late John Thompson and the late Edward Thompson.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A., Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Ernest D. Brown Jr., 47

Boothbay Harbor, Maine - Ernest Delos Brown Jr., 47, a former resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 4, 2000, at St. Andrew's Hospital at Boothbay Harbor.

Born in Hyannis, Mr. Brown grew up on Cape Cod and graduated in 1971 from Barnstable High School.

Mr. Brown fished all his life. He worked with his grandfather, the late Roger Conant, in the plumbing and heating business.

Mr. Brown moved to Maine in 1981 and lobstered in that area. He loved going fishing whether for work or fun.

He is survived by his parents, Ernest D. Brown Sr. and Phyllis Conant Brown of Hyannis; a daughter, Alacia Brown of Southport; a sister, Pamela Bouldry of Hyannis; two brothers, Creighton "Craig" Brown of Centerville and Peter Brown of Osterville; a nephew; three nieces; and several cousins.

A graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hyannis at a later date to be announced.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fisherman's Memorial Fund or the American Diabetes Association.

Marjorie D. Chittim, 89

Sarasota, Fla. - Marjorie D. Chittim, 89, a resident of Long Boat Key, died Nov. 22, 2000, at Heartland Health Care of Sarasota.

She was the wife of Robert H. Chittim and the late Walter A. Brown. Mr. Brown was the founder of the Boston Celtics.

During most of her life, she spent summers in Centerville. She was a member of the Boston Athletic Association and the Beach Club in Centerville.

Surviving besides her husband are a sister, Harriet Whittemore of Cape Cod; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and stepchildren.

Her only child, Marjorie B. Whelton, died in 1995.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.

William G. 'Bill' Henry, 59

Marstons Mills - William G. "Bill" Henry, 59, a resident of Marstons Mills, died Dec. 3, 2000, at his home after a brief illness with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Falmouth, Mr. Henry attended Falmouth schools and graduated from the New Hampton Preparatory School in New Hampton, N.H. He also attended Burdett Business School in Boston and Boston University.

He was an assistant vice president for many years at the former New England Merchants Bank in Boston.

Mr. Henry returned to the Cape in the early 1970s and pursued a career in real estate. He eventually opened the Butler's Pantry restaurant in Mashpee and later became the proprietor of the Popponesset Inn in Mashpee. He co-founded the Inn at The Mills in Marstons Mills and operated it for 15 years.

He is survived by an aunt, Elizabeth H. Handy of Woods Hole; an uncle, George B. Dunnington of Brockton; and several cousins.

Elwood M. Howland, 80

Hyannis - Elwood M. Howland, 80, a native and former resident of Wellfleet, died Dec. 3, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital after an illness.

He was the husband of Ruth (Chapman) Howland.

Born, raised and educated in Wellfleet, Mr. Howland was a veteran of the 5th Army, serving in Africa and Italy during World War II.

After the war, he returned to Wellfleet and worked as an appliance service and repairman. He also managed a curtain factory in Wellfleet and a commercial laundry in Hyannis, was a volunteer firefighter for the town of Wellfleet for 20 years and a policeman for four years.

Mr. Howland married and settled in Hyannis in 1971. He retired from the Arnold Dwyer Appliance Service Co. in Provincetown in 1985 after 20 years of service. In retirement, he worked part time for the Granada Hospital Group, renting televisions to patients at Cape Cod Hospital.

A member of the Cape Cod Organ Society for many years, he enjoyed playing the organ and composing songs. He was also an active member of the Federated Church of Hyannis, a former member of the Masons, a member and past district deputy of the Odd Fellows, both of Wellfleet, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Hyannis.

From 1991 to 1997, he and his wife lived in Hendersonville, Tenn.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Beverly Wildman of Norwalk, Iowa; a grandson; and a great-grandchild.
