Marguerite A. Woodbury

Hyannis - Marguerite A. (Meade) Woodbury of Hyannis died March 8, 2002, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care - Pavilion in Hyannis following a long illness.
She was the wife of David E. Woodbury for 45 years.
Mrs. Woodbury was born in Boston and lived in Brookline, attending Brookline schools.
She moved to Hyannis after residing in Newton and New York.
She was employed by Cape Cod Bank and Trust for 11 years, retiring in 1995.
She was a member of Hyannis Senior Citizens, an avid reader, and loved to travel, visiting Maine in the summer and Florida in the winter.
Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Susan McNamara of Hyannis, Patricia Mulcahy of Scituate, and Janet Bailey of Hanson; a son, David E. Woodbury Jr. of Cotuit; a brother, John M. Meade of Mashpee; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis, with burial in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

John Randall Berrian, 92

Marstons Mills - John Randall Berrian, 92 of Marstons Mills and formerly of Livingston, N.J., died March 13, 2002, at his home.
He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Berrian for nearly 64 years.
Born in Bronx, N.Y., Mr. Berrian earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University.
He began his career in 1932 in New Jersey and was teaching mathematics in Teaneck when the United States entered World War II. In 1942, he entered the Navy as a lieutenant. He became an anti-submarine specialist, serving on destroyers in both the North Atlantic and North Sea as a sonar officer. He later served as port officer in the Mediterranean. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander. After discharge in 1945, he became chief of the educational program of the Veterans Administration in New York City.
In 1948, he returned to public education as a principal in Tivoli, N.Y. One year later, he became secondary school administrator for the Union, N.J., School District. He then served as principal of Kawahmee Junior High School for 25 years until his retirement in 1976.
In 1978, he moved to Marstons Mills. He loved to be outdoors and appreciating nature.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Jon D. Berrian of West Long Branch, N.J., and Donald W. Berrian of Topsfield; a brother, Bruce D. Berrian of Marstons Mills; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Lucy Marie Branzetti, 71

Cotuit - Lucy Marie (Barbo) Branzetti, 71, a resident of Cotuit, died March 12, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of Joseph O. Branzetti Jr. for 52 years.
Born, raised and educated in Newton, Mrs. Branzetti graduated from Newton High School. She moved to Cotuit from Wilmington 10 years ago.
Mrs. Branzetti was co-founder of J.O.B. Finishing in Wilmington. She was an interior decorator, an avid cook and an accomplished bridge player.
Prior to retirement, she was a real estate sales associate in Centerville. She was a member of the Sandwich Women's Club and the Barnstable Newcomers Club.
Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Joseph O. Branzetti III of Andover and Paul J. Branzetti of Waltham; two daughters, Alice Branzetti of Windham, N.H., and Lisa Branzetti of Washington , D.C.; five sisters, Victoria J. Miyara of Lexington, Charlotte A. Wilder of Cotuit, Ellena M. O'Toole of Washington , D.C., Janet L. Martel of Cotuit and Patricia C. Gunches of West Hills, Calif.; and four grandsons.
A funeral service was held at John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills.
Memorial donations may be made to the Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center, c/o Cape Cod Hospital, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Ruth Carney Burnes, 87

Osterville - Ruth Carney Burnes, 87, a resident of Osterville, died of pneumonia March 14, 2002, at her home.
She was the wife of the late Richard M. Burnes.
Mrs. Burnes grew up in Gardner and summered in Osterville. She attended Dana Hall School and Vassar College. She worked as a social worker in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital in the 1930s. Later, she became a long-term supporter of the Visiting Nurse Association.
Mrs. Burnes was married in 1938. She and her husband raised their five sons in Framingham and moved to Osterville in 1970.
An enthusiastic and skillful gardener, both indoors and out, Mrs. Burnes was very active in the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for many years and won numerous awards in the amateur gardening exhibits in the annual flower show. She was a member of the Winter Gardeners, a Boston-area group interested in indoor gardening.
She was an active tennis player up until a year ago. An avid reader and bridge player, she participated in local book and bridge clubs.
An experienced sailor with a love of the sea, she raced Wianno seniors as a teenager, and raced with her husband and family in six Bermuda races and many Halifax races, the Buenos Aries-Rio and Fasnet races. She also cruised extensively around northern Europe, Ireland, the Caribbean, Cape Cod and the coast of Maine.
She loved music and was a member of the board of governors of the Cape Cod Conservatory. She also was a member of the Wianno Yacht Club, the Wianno Club and the Chilton Club of Boston.
Surviving are four sons, Richard M. Burnes of Boston, Kennett F. Burnes and Dr. Daniel C. Burnes, both of Chestnut Hill, and Andrew P. Burnes of South Dartmouth; two sisters, Elisabeth Devlin of Osterville and Catharine Theis of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Philip Carney of Vero Beach, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also the mother of the late James N. Burnes.
A funeral service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Osterville.

Ethel D. Cummings, 93

Barnstable - Ethel D. Cummings, 93, a resident of Barnstable, died at her home March 22, 2002.
She was the wife of the late Richard M. Cummings for more than 45.
Born in Woburn, Mrs. Cummings was raised and educated in Winchester. She attended Lesley College in Cambridge, graduating in 1929 with a degree in education.
Mrs. Cummings taught kindergarten through sixth grade in the Winchester school system, and later kindergarten in the Boston Public Schools.
She married in 1935 and she and her husband raised their three daughters in West Roxbury. The Cummingses moved to Barnstable in 1970 after they retired.
Mrs. Cummings loved gardening and music, and was a member of the Hyannis Garden Club, the West Roxbury Women's Club and the Cape Cod Conservatory Guild. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Massachusetts, Cape Cod Chapter, and enjoyed singing with the Cape Cod Chorale.
Mrs. Cummings is survived by three daughters, Joan Solomon of Winchester, Barbara Cederlund of Canton and Carolyn Claiborn, of Manchester, N.H.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
A graveside service was held at St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc., 68 Route 134, Dennis, MA 02660.

Calvin H. Dudley, 60

Seattle - Calvin H. Dudley, 60, a resident of Seattle who leaves a brother in Cotuit, died unexpectedly March 5, 2002, in Seattle.
Mr. Dudley graduated from Barnstable High School and immediately enlisted in the Army.
After receiving an honorable discharge, he worked briefly for the Town of Barnstable.
When wanderlust got the best of him, he moved to Seattle and started his own business. He remained there until his death.
Surviving are a brother, Peter Dudley of Cotuit; a sister, Patricia Dudley Rice of Almira, Wash.; and seven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Seattle at a later date.

Virginia Toohey Ensign, 85

Centerville - Virginia (Coan) Toohey Ensign, 85, a resident of Centerville, died March 12, 2002, of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
She was the wife of Robert Ensign, who died in 1998, and the wife of John L. Toohey, who died in 1975.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she graduated from Smith College in 1938 and from the City College of New York in 1964.
She taught English in Weschester County, N.Y., for many years. She married John L. Toohey in 1941 and was widowed in 1975.
She moved to Monterey and became a staff member at Gould Farm, a residential therapeutic community. In 1980, she married Robert Ensign.
She was a summer resident of Chebeague Island, Maine, for more than 65 years. She was an avid sailor and a dedicated sailboat racer. She founded the Chebeague Island Sailing school, and was also an ardent supporter of the island library. Besides sailing, her passions were reading, attending the theater, playing Scrabble and skiing.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary T. Cushman of Chebeague Island, Maine, Margaret T. Bossi of Dennis and Norah T. Alper of Brookline; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held on Chebeague Island, Maine.
Memorial donations may be made to the Island Commons, Chebeague Island, ME 04017.

James J. 'Joe' Farley, 92

Hyannis - James J. "Joe" Farley, 92, of Hyannis, formerly of Holden, died March 14, 2002, at Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Living Center in South Dennis.
He was the husband of Shirley L. (Reis) Farley for 59 years .
Born in Haverhill, Mr. Farley served in the Navy during World War II.
He worked for Norton Co. in Worcester until his retirement in 1972.
Mr. Farley spent many winters in Bonita Springs, Fla. He enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming, gardening and spending time with his family.
Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, Ann-Marie Bond of Pasadena, Md., Patricia Richards of Hyannis, Kathleen Tucker of Barre, Vt., and Jo-Ann Bellone of Mashpee; two sisters, Mary Lane of Haverhill and Rita Hassett of Lowell; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated in Christ the King Chapel at Mashpee Commons.
Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
Memorials donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association of Cape Cod, 895 Mary Dunn Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.
