Greenlaw, Mary A. "Mickey" (Minkowski)
Greenlaw, Mary A. "Mickey" (Minkowski), 85 of West Yarmouth died Friday August 13, 2010 at the Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brewster, after a recent diagnosis of cervical cancer.
She was the beloved wife of the late Parker M. “Pete” Greenlaw, Sr. who died in 1996. They had been married for 53 years.
A first generation Polish-American, Mrs. Greenlaw was born in Lowell to the late Walter and Anna Minkowski. She was the sixth of seven children.
As is today, times were difficult and when her parents became unable to properly provide for their children, the younger siblings became wards of the state, the pre-cursor to the current Foster Care program. At the age of seven, Mrs. Greenlaw was removed from her home and lived with a number of families. The situation built the foundation of what was Mickey’s most driving force, the importance of family.
During her junior year of high school, Mrs. Greenlaw decided to take a trip from Boston to Provincetown on the MV The Steel Pier. As she was boarding the ship, she looked up and saw a handsome crew member and said to her girlfriend, “That is the man I am going to marry.” And that she did. After her graduation from Canton High School, she and Pete were married on August 20, 1944 in Melrose. Until the day that he died, she called him her “boyfriend” and they never stopped holding hands or sharing loving winks.
A job offer, and Pete’s love of the sea, brought the Greenlaw’s to the Cape in 1947. They lived in the Octagon House on South Street in Hyannis until they purchased their home in West Yarmouth.
Mickey made a career of being a loving wife, a selfless mother, a true friend, and a great neighbor. She was always willing to lend a hand, give a hug, be a safe confidant, provide a place to stay, give a ride, prepare a meal, gives words of encouragement, and an occasional reprimand. He door was always open to everyone and the coffee pot was always on. She was the best Mom, Gramma, and Great Gramma to her family, and she became the second Mom to many.
When Mrs. Greenlaw became a grandmother at the age of 43 and with a 3 year old daughter herself, someone said, “Mickey, now it is time for knitting in the rocking chair.” That was all she needed-she promptly took up skiing for the first time. The family never knew what she would say or do next.
Mrs. Greenlaw was a talented artist, working with charcoal and oils. She also loved to knit and crochet, and she was a talented seamstress and made most of her children’s clothes.
Mickey began each day with a song and ended the day by saying The Rosary. Her religion and absolute faith carried her throughout her life. She lived every minute believing that there is good in everyone, and you must forgive and forget, and prayer will get you through.
Mrs. Greenlaw tirelessly cared for her late husband at home for over the nine years that he was bedridden. Rarely complaining, she would often joke that she was a nurse without having to go to college. He life was spent caring for others, and she would never have it any other way.
Her twinkling blue eyes, beautiful smile, outgoing personality, genuine kindness, sharp sense of humor, and contagious laugh will be remembered by all that have met her. Nothing can replace the void caused by her physical absence, but her legacy of love, and the importance of family will live on within her family forever.
Mrs. Greenlaw is survived by a daughter, Jeannette Lang of Brewster; a sister, Anna Souza of Mansfield; seven grandchildren, Parker and Emma Lang both of Brewster, Matthew Borowski and his wife, Kim of Yarmouthport, Allen Borowski, Nicole Hill, Cristan Vineis and Wendy Greenlaw; three great grandchildren, Nicholas, Meghan and Elizabeth Borowski; sister of the heart, and best friend, Marie Flaherty of West Palm Beach, FL; and many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she is predeceased by a daughter, Mary Anne “Annie” Henry; and a son, Parker M. “Skip” Greenlaw, Jr.
Mrs. Greenlaw’s family would like to extend a “special thank you” to the staff of South West Wing at Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the amazing care, compassion, and genuine kindness given to Mickey during the last few weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday August 19 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
Visiting hours will precede the service beginning at 4 p.m. in the funeral home.
Interment will be private.
The family has designated the Elder Services of Cape Cod, 68 Rte. 134, South Dennis, MA 02660 or the VNA Hospice, 434 Rte. 134, Suite D-3, South Dennis, MA 02660 for memorial contributions.
