James Sterling IV
January 09, 1922 - April 23, 2009

James Sterling, 87, devoted husband of the late Patricia Sterling, died at his home after a brief illness. His children Anne, James, Mary, and Elizabeth were at his bedside, along with several old and dear friends.

Born in Oklahoma, Jim grew up in Potsdam, NY, graduating from Clarkson College with a degree in electrical engineering. He met Patricia while he worked at MIT. They married and moved to Conantum in Concord, Mass, where they lived for almost 60 years. Jim worked as a technical writer, retiring from Raytheon at the Department of Transportation in 1984

Jim had three abiding passions—his family, his workshop, and his very dry martini before dinner (never elitists, Jim and Pat drank them stirred or shaken).

After Pat’s death, Jim continued as the center of his family. He spent his favorite evenings at the head of the dinner table, presiding over family pasta dinners or elaborate birthday meals. Pat and Jim, later Jim and his children, held a Christmas Eve party every year they lived in Conantum. A celebration that started as a gathering of young parents in the neighborhood who had finished wrapping the gifts for their children, the party grew to include the spouses and friends of Jim and Pat’s children and grandchildren. Few such traditions continue across three generations.

Jim may have been the last of the letter writers in this world of email and text messages and instant messaging. He wrote letters weekly to his family and friends, covering every area of life. He typed his letters on a Smith Corona typewriter until ribbons became scarce. After that, his trusted Apple computer performed the letter duty admirably, with a certain regretted lack of intimacy.

His workshop was his sanctuary. A tool for every purpose, from anvils to vice grips, and everything in between. Every connector, screw, bolt, nut, snap, rivet, hook, eye, or nail you can imagine. Each a solution to a problem yet unfound. Metal work, wood work, and jewelry, Jim loved them all. His shop was a wonder of organization; a place for everything and everything in its place. Only Jim knew all the places—the nooks, bins, drawers, shelves, and cabinets. A journey of discovery for his children and grandchildren in the days to come.

A skilled practical engineer, he wired the house, built model steam engines, built a bicycle for two, and solved all those nagging household problems, such as where to keep the large pasta bowl and the cutting boards, or repairing the household appliances.

Jim and Pat’s children Anne Sterling of Acton, Jake Sterling of Concord, Mary Sterling of Concord, and Elizabeth Sterling of Marlborough survive them, as well as four grandchildren Patricia, Daniel, Julia, and Sarah.

Jim’s grace, wit, and charm will be deeply missed by all.

The family scheduled his memorial service at 2:00 PM, Saturday, 2 May, at the First Parish Church in Concord, MA. Please gather afterwards at the Sterling’s house on Holden Wood Rd. You can make memorial tributes to Jim to Open Table online (www.opentableinc.org/donation), or by mail to Open Table Concord, PO Box 42, Concord, MA, 01742.
