Charles M. Lewis
October 5, 2000

Charles M. Lewis, 69, of Beverly, died unexpectedly on Oct. at his home.

Mr. Lewis was born in Peabody, the son of the late Charles M. and Ruth Castle Lewis.

He had bees a resident of Beverly for many years and prior to retirement was employed by Sylvania.

Mr. Lewis was active in Masonic circles. At the time of his death, he was a member and secretary of Liberty Lodge AF & AM, master of the North Shore Day Light Lodge in Beverly, member of the Scottish rite bodies of Salem and Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington. He was also a past master of Liberty Lodge AF & AM.

Mr. Lewis is survived by: two uncles, Wesley J. Lewis of Beverly, and Robert E. Lewis of Annapolis, Md. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8 in the Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Beverly, at noon. Visiting hours are Friday, Oct. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. Liberty Lodge AF & AM Masonic service will be held Friday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. Burial will be in the North Beverly Cemetery.

Constance M. Byron, Owned 5 & 10 stores
October 5, 2000

Constance M. (Bonenfant) Byron, 85, of North Andover resident, died Sept. 28, at the Whittier Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Joseph F. Byron.

Born in Lynn, she and her late husband owned and operated the Byron 5 & 10 Cent Stores in North Andover on Main Street and the Staples 5 & 10 Cent Store in Hampton Beach, N.H.

Mrs. Byron was an active member at St. Michael's Church in North Andover, was a member of the Altar Guild and the Blessed Virgin Sodality, and a member and past president of the St. Michael's School's PTO. Mr. and Mrs. Byron were among the co-founders of the North Andover Booster's Club. She sang in the Choir at St. Mary's Church in Lawrence and was a volunteer at the Holy Family Hospital.

Mrs. Byron was an avid sports fan, especially as an enthusiastic supporter of the Boston Red Sox. In her earlier days, she was a model for the Hart Agency in Boston and had also worked for the B & M Railroad.

She is survived by: a son, Joseph F. and his wife Ellen of Haverhill; her daughter, Charlotte the wife of Douglas Small of North Andover; her daughter-in-law Jean Byran of Haverhill; a brother Robert Bonenfant of Salem; two sisters Margaret Iarrobino of Lynn and Winifred White of Beverly; her sister-in-law Barbara Bonenfant of North Andover; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Michael J. and William P. Byron.

A funeral Mass was held on Oct. 2 at St. Michael's Church in North Andover. Burial followed in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence. Arrangements were by the Dewhirst and Conte Funeral Home of North Andover.

Evelyn R. O'Neil, 94
October 5, 2000

Evelyn R. O'Neil, 94, of Melrose died at the Bearhill Nursing Center in Wakefield after a lengthy illness.

Born and raised in Melrose, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Kerr) O'Neil. She was a graduate of St Mary's Grammar School and High School, Class of 1923. A member of St Mary's Sodality and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Melrose K of C. She was a secretary at Dunn Financial Company in Boston for many years.

Ms. O'Neil was the sister of John F. O'Neil and Elizabeth Contreas, both of Melrose; aunt of John G. O'Neil of Salisbury, Mary Angelos of Andover, Mark J. O'Neil of Beverly and Barbara Thompson of Melrose. She also leaves many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Ms. O'Neil was also the sister of the late William J. O'Neil, Martha Doucette, David J. O'Neil and Mary H Oatman; and was the sister-in-law of the late Mary E. O'Neil and aunt of the late Kathleen O'Neil.

Funeral services were held from the Gately Funeral Home of Melrose on Sept. 28, followed by a funeral Mass in St Mary's Church of Melrose. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, 112 Lynde St., Melrose.

Grace E. Guenet, Beverly Hospital volunteer
October 5, 2000

Grace E. (Carpenter) Guenet, 92, of Beverly, died Sept. 25 at the Blueberry Hill Health Care in Beverly, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Eugene Guenet.

Born in Gloucester, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Annie (Wilson) Carpenter. She was a graduate of Gloucester High School. Mrs. Guenet had also attended Salem State College. Mrs. Guenet had been a resident of Manchester-by-the-Sea for more than 50 years, and Magnolia for three years.

Mrs. Guenet was a member of the Sacred Heart Sodality. She was a volunteer at Beverly Hospital and also a member of the Golden Ages of Manchester by the Sea. She was also a former member of the Manchester Women's Club.

She was the mother of Anne Day and her husband Lewis of West Newbury; grandmother of Elisa Heath and Diana Ring, both of Manchester-by the-Sea and Lewis Day III of Farmington, Conn.; great-grandmother of Ryan and David Heath of Manchester-by-the-Sea.

A memorial funeral Mass was held at the Sacred Heart Church in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Oct. 1. Arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, 60 School St., Manchester by the Sea, MA 01944.

John J. Brady Jr. , World War II veteran
October 5, 2000

John J. Brady Jr., 77, of Miami Shores, Fla., died Sept. 20.

Born in Annapolis, Md., June 27, 1923, he was the son of John J. Brady and Barbara MacDonald Brady. He lived in Beverly Farms until 1966 when he became a Florida resident.

Mr. Brady was a partner in J.J. Brady & Sons Horse Transportation Co. of Beverly Farms and Opa Locka, Fla. He was a World War II veteran, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion Post 113.

Mr. Brady belonged to Miami Shores Country Club and formerly the Salem Country Club.

Mr. Brady is survived by: a son, John J. Brady, III; two daughters, Janet and her husband Gray Hickman and Johannah and her husband Howard Rieman; and three grandchildren, Nicholas, Justin and Brendan Rieman, all of Miami, Fla. He is also survived by three brothers, William and Thomas Brady of Beverly Farms and James Brady of Manchester-by-the-Sea; and a sister, Barbara Horrigan of Peabody.

A funeral service was celebrated on Sept. 25 at St. Martha's Church in Miami Shores, Fla. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret's Church, Beverly Farms, on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited.

Donations may be sent in his memory to the North Shore Catholic Charities, 280 Washington St., Salem MA 01970, Arrangements under the direction of Cofer-Kolski-Combs Funeral Home, 10931 N.E. 6th Ave., Miami Shores, Fla.

Evelyn R. O'Brien, Ties to Beverly
September 28, 2000

Evelyn R. O'Brien, 94, of Melrose died Sept. 24 at the Bearhill Nursing Center in Wakefield after a lengthy illness.

She was the sister of the late William J. O'Neil, Martha Doucette, David J. O'Neil, Mary H Oatman; sister-in-law of the late Mary E. O'Neil and aunt of the late Kathleen O'Neil

Funeral will be held from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church on the corner of Herbert and Myrtle Streets in Melrose at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends invited. Friends may call at the Funeral Home prior to the Mass. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, 112 Lynde St., Melrose.

George T. Craig, Honored veteran, beloved husband
September 28, 2000

George T. Craig, 76, of Beverly, died Sept. 23 at the Harborside Cedar Glen Nursing Center in Danvers. He was the husband of Anne A. (Wholley) Craig.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Jondro) Craig. He had lived in Salem for most of his life and in Beverly for the past three years. He was a graduate of Salem High School, honor graduate of Salem Commercial School, honor graduated of Bentley College of Accounting and Finance and also the Naval Signal School at the University of Illinois.

He enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After graduating from the Naval Signal School at the University of Illinois, he was transferred to Little Creek, VA for duty aboard the newly commissioned USS LCI (L) 28. The 28 was the flagship consisting of 36 LCI (L)s in the 7th Amphibious South West Pacific Fleet and participated in 14 naval battles in British New Guinea, Dutch New Guinea, and the Solomen islands for two years. He also served a year in U.S. NOS Greenland and three years in U.S. NOS Newfoundland. During his 7 1/2 years in the Navy he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific medal with three Bronze Stars, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the European Theater Medal, the American Defense Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was previously employed for 20 years as an office manager and accountant for RJ Steck & Company and its two affiliates. He was the city auditor for the City of Salem from 1967 to 1968, and office manager and accountant for Daniel Lowes and the State Comptrollers Division of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a accountant supervisor of the Field Division. He was also director of audits for the Board of Community Colleges before transferring to Northern Essex Community College. He retired from Northern Essex Community College in 1984 as comptroller. He also maintained his own public accounting practice for 35 years.

He was a member of the State Public Accountants Association of Massachusetts, Knights of Columbus in Danvers, AOH Division 18 in Salem, Retired City and State Municipal Employee Association, VFW Post 1524 in Salem. Amvets Post 53 in Salem, American Legion Post 23 Salem, DAV Post 82 Salem, USS LCI National Association; plank owner, National Association of Government Accountant's. He was also a former member of the Salem Rotary Club and a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church for 46 years before moving to Beverly.

Mr. Craig and his wife, Anne, traveled frequently upon his retirement and enjoyed his annual Navy LCI Ships Reunion where the couple renewed acquaintances with old Navy buddies and shipmates.

In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter; A. Catherine "Micki" O'Brien and her husband Paul of Wakefield; three sons, George Jr. and Charles both of Beverly and James Craig of Amesbury; one brother, Robert Craig and his wife Eleanor of Beverly; two sisters; Eleanor Meaney of Haverhill and Helen Beach and her husband Ralph of Stuart, FL; eight grandchildren, Kathryn O'Brien of Wakefield, Brian, Meghan, Sara, and Connor Craig all of Lisbon Falls, ME, Theresa, Emily, and Michaela Craig all of Beverly, and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Charles Craig, June Bevins, Carolyn Call, and Dorothy Sullivan.

The funeral was held from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly on Sept. 27, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

Gordon Thompson, Veteran, public servant
September 28, 2000

Gordon "Tiny" Thompson, 79, of Hamilton, died Sept. 24 at his residence following a long illness. He was the husband of husband of the late Barbara Ann (Brooks) Thompson.

Born in Ipswich, he was the son of the late Leland and Marion (Crowley) Thompson.

He had been a resident of Hamilton all of his life. Following his graduation from Hamilton High School, he entered the United States Coast Guard and served his Country during World War II. Following his enlistment, he worked with General Electric for a short period of time. He opened the GL Thompson Construction Company in Hamilton for several years. He also owned and operated the Atlantic Richfield Service Station in Hamilton for several years. Following the service station, he was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic for many years retiring from North Shore Recycled Fibers in Salem.

Mr. Thompson had served the Town of Hamilton in a wide range of capacities for more than 50 years. He served 36 years with the Hamilton Fire Department and was named chief in 1963. He served 15 years on the Board of Public Works and was chairman for 10 of those years. He also served 16 years on the Board of Water Commissioners. At the time of his death he was a special liaison between the Department of Public Works and the Board of Selectmen. He was also a member of the Hamilton Historical Society.

He was a member of the American Legion, AP Gardner Post 194 in Hamilton and also the John T. Heard Lodge of Masons in Ipswich.

He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed planting and tending to his vegetable gardens and most especially his flower gardens.

Surviving him are one son, Gordon Thompson, Jr. and his wife Martha of Essex; two daughters; Sandra Thompson of Hamilton and Donna "Tootie" Flint and her husband Gary of Hamilton; three sister, Eleanor Harrigan of Beverly, Dorothy Nelms of Winter Park, FL, and Ruth Butman of CA, and four grandchildren, Stephen Thompson of Malden, David Thompson of Essex, and Jami and Peter Flint both of Hamilton.

He was the brother of the late Barbara Stone.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Hamilton on Sept. 27. Burial was in the Hamilton Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 391 Bay Rd., S. Hamilton, MA 01982 or to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
