Margaret McDowell, Family ties to Beverly
October 26, 2000

Margaret (Ray) McDowell, 90, of Salem died Oct. 20 after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late John McDowell, former dean of Boston University School of Social Work.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. McDowell was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Gibbons) Ray. She lived in Bergenfield, N.J. for many years and was a graduate of the Chatham College in Pennsylvania.

Mrs. McDowell is survived by: three daughters, Nancy M. Winter of Beverly, Janet McDowell of Stamford, Conn. and Evelyn McDowell of Salem; and three sisters, Virginia Randall of New Jersey, Gertrude Mann of Pennsylvania and Florence Stier of Washington.

A memorial funeral service was held Oct. 23 from the First Baptist Church in Beverly. Arrangements were by the Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home of Beverly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Beverly.

Peter H. Levine, Beverly native
October 26, 2000

Peter H. Levine, 47, of Boston, formerly of Beverly died Oct. 16 in Boston after a lengthy illness.

Born in Beverly, Mr. Levine was the son of Edward L. and Ruth J. Levine of Beverly. He was a graduate of Beverly High School and had been a resident of Boston for many years.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Levine is survived by his children, Steven and Tania Levine of Lynn and Corey Levine of Salem; one brother, Robert Levine of Beverly; and two sisters, Frances Levine of Beverly and Carol Levine of Salem.

A private memorial service was held at the Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home of Beverly.

Robert D. LaPointe, Restaurant cook
October 26, 2000

Robert D. LaPointe, 47, of Peabody died unexpectedly Oct. 21 at Salem Hospital.

Born in Beverly, Mr. LaPointe was the son of Violet (Sullivan) LaPointe and the late Robert J. LaPointe. He graduated from Beverly High School in 1971 and was employed as a cook for Papa Gino's and the Ponderosa Restaurants in Peabody as well as the former Howard Johnson's restaurant in Beverly.

In addition to his mother, Mr. LaPointe is survived by: two sisters, Debra Woodland of Beverly and Lynda Therrien of Derry, N.H.; two nieces, Pamela Woodland of Beverly and Christine Bousquet of Lawrence; one nephew, Donald St. Pierre of Derry, N.H.; two great-nieces, Chelsea and Julia Bousquet and a great-nephew, Joshua Bousquet.

His funeral service will be held today from the Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane St., Beverly at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Thomas J. Nicholson Sr., Postal employee
October 26, 2000

Thomas J. Nicholson Sr., 89, of Beverly died Oct. 20 at the Harborside Cedar Glen Nursing Center in Danvers following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Florence S. (Anderberg) Nicholson.

Born and raised in Dorchester, Mr. Nicholson was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Moore) Nicholson. He was a graduate of T. Christopher's High School in Dorchester and had been a resident of Beverly for over 17 years.

Mr. Nicholson was employed with the United States Postal Service for over 30 years and he retired in 1971 from Lynnfield. He was a member and president of the Senior Citizens Activity Group at Turtle Creek where he had been living and was very active in the Melodyairs and on the bowling league at Turtle Creek.

Mr. Nicholson is survived by: three sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas Jr. and Laura Nicholson of Nashua, N.H., Edwin Nicholson of Deering, N.H. and Richard Nicholson of Cambridge; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Charles Cravin of Dover, N.H. and Cheryl and Jay Smith of Rockport; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He also had several late brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held Oct. 24 from St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Beverly. Burial was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.

Wayne E. Merrill, Mechanic, musician
October 26, 2000

Wayne e. Merrill, 42, of Beverly died unexpectedly Oct. 22 at Beverly Hospital. He was the husband of Diana M. (Masforroll) Merrill.

A lifetime resident of Beverly, Mr. Merrill was the son of Everett F. and Winifred R. (Conant) Merrill of Beverly. He graduated from Beverly High School and was a painter and an experienced automobile mechanic. He also enjoyed playing the drums.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Merrill is survived by: a son, Erik M. Porter of Beverly; two daughters, Jessica Savory and Destiny T. Porter, both of Beverly; a stepdaughter, Ali L. Avallon of Beverly; one brother, Peter S. Merrill of California; four sisters, Gail P. Beaulieu of South Carolina, Kim A. St. John, Lisa J. Sylvester and Lori J. Owsiak, all of Beverly; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Tina M. Morales who died in 1983.

Funeral services were held this morning from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly, followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Beverly. Burial was in North Beverly Cemetery.

Ann E. Gonzales, Worked at nursing homes
October 19, 2000

Ann E. (Sedlak) Gonzales, 66, of Beverly died suddenly Oct. 11 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of Salvador Gonzales.

Born and raised in Middleton, Mrs. Gonzales was the daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Tadakowski) Sedlak. She graduated from Holton High School in Danvers with the Class of 1952, and attended North Shore Community College at the Beverly campus.

Mrs. Gonzales was employed with the Beverly Nursing Home for 11 years. She also worked as a Home Health Aid and with Ledgewood Nursing Home, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary. She was an avid bingo player and was very dedicated to her family, taking great pride in all of their accomplishments.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gonzales is survived by: a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Carman Gonzales of Peabody; two daughters, Linda Gonzales of Beverly and Cheryl Ann Gonzales of Fall River; three sisters, Mary Ribeck and Eva Berson, both of Beverly and Olga Martinick of Middleton; grandchildren, Rose and Scott Gonzales, both of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Joseph Sedlak.

Funeral services were held form the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly, followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly. Burial was at North Beverly Cemetery.

Carmen M. Vanne, Dedicated to family
October 19, 2000

Carmen M. (Spinazzola) (Lamoly) Vanne, 59, of Danvers, formerly of Salem died Oct. 12 in Salem Hospital. She was the wife of the late Louis Vanne and the former wife of Bernard "Dean" Lamoly of Coral Springs, Fla.

Born in Boston and educated in Revere, Mrs. Vanne was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (MacMillan) Spinazzola. Dedicated to her family, she became married and raised her children. Later, she was employed by the former Lechmere Department Stores and, more recently, had been employed at St. Joseph's Credit Union for several years, until becoming ill.

Mrs. Vanne was active at the Division 18 A.O.H. in Salem where she belonged to the bowling teams. She was also very involved in several civic and community organizations on the North Shore.

Mrs. Vanne is survived by: her children, Catherine Mercier of Salem, Denise Pierce of Beverly, Joseph Lamoly and his wife, Julie of Danvers, Paul Lamoly of Coral Springs, Fla., David Vanne of Salem, Lori Jean Vanne of Newburgh, N.Y., and Jason Vanne and his wife, Joanne of Lynn; her sister, Denise "Dee Dee" Ferullo of Santa Clarita, Calif.; her mother-in-law, Mary (Cyr) Vanne of Salem; eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were held Oct. 16 from the Murphy Funeral Home, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. James Church. Interment was at Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Drive, Peabody, MA 01960.

Carrie R. Emo, Beverly native
October 19, 2000

Carrie R. (Nicol) Emo, 84, formerly of Beverly Farms, died Oct. 13 after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Christopher Emo.

Born in Beverly, Mrs. Emo was the daughter o f the late William and Lois Nicol. She was a former resident of Connolly Place for many years in Beverly Farms and was an active member and deaconess of the Sunshine Club of the North Shore Community Baptist Church in Beverly Farms.

Mrs. Emo is survived by: her daughter, Caroline Rhuda and her husband, Paul of Medfield; sons, J. Robert Emo and his fiance Maureen O'Brien of Prides Crossing and James C. Emo of New Bedford; two grandchildren, Timothy and Christopher Rhuda of Medfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late William C. Emo and the sister of Etna Regan, Clarence Nicol, both of Beverly and the late Lillian LeBlanc.

Funeral services were held Oct. 17 from the North Shore Community Baptist Church of Beverly Farms. Burial was in Beverly Farms Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Lee, Moody & Russell Funeral Home of Beverly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Shore Community Baptist Church, Beverly Farms, MA 01915.

Charles M. Wheeler, U.S. Marines veteran
October 19, 2000

Charles M. Wheeler, 76, of Beverly died Oct. 12 at the North Shore Rehabilitation Center in Danvers. He was the husband of Jean (Doyle) Wheeler.

Born and educated in Salem, Mr. Wheeler was the son of the late Harold and Alice (Dorrien) Wheeler. He was a resident of Beverly for 45 years. Following his education, Mr. Wheeler entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1941 to 1945 during World War II in the South Pacific, including the Marshal Islands and Iwo Jima.

Following his military duty, he was employed with Raytheon during the late 1950s. He then was employed with the city of Beverly in 1966. Mr. Wheeler worked as an electrician's assistant before retiring in December of 1986. He was also an active member of the Vittori-Rocci Post 56 and of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Wheeler enjoyed golfing and swimming at the YMCA and took great pride in the accomplishments of his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his two daughters, Donna Jean Hill and her husband, Guy of Douglas and Karen Wheeler-Madden and her husband, Dan of Franklin; a brother, Harold Wheeler of Lynn; four grandchildren, Ryan, Drew, Christopher and Courtney Hill, all of Douglas; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wheeler was also the brother of the late Leonard Wheeler.

Funeral services were held Oct. 16 from the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly. Burial was in North Beverly Cemetery.

Joseph P. Roccio, U.S. Navy veteran
October 19, 2000

Joseph P. Roccio, 79, of Beverly died Oct. 10 at Beverly Hospital. He was the husband of Mary P. (Ahearn) Roccio.

A resident of Beverly his whole life, Mr. Roccio was the son of the late John and Maria (Spiridigliozzi) Roccio. He attended Beverly Public Schools. Following high school, Mr. Roccio entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.

He was employed with the United Shoe Machine Corporation for more than 40 years and worked in the Foundry Division of the company. Mr. Roccio was also a member of the Quarter Century Club at the United Shoe Machine Corporation and was a founding member of the Vittori-Rocci Post. He was also and avid youth sports follower and a Little League Coach.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Roccio is survived by: his two sons, Thomas Roccio and his wife, Lynne of Beverly, John Roccio and his wife, Jean of Beverly; two sisters, Margaret Corriere of Beverly and Mary Rhodes of Beverly; five grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Jonathan, David and Amy Roccio, all of Beverly; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Arthur, Alfred, Albert, Americo and Thomas Roccio and Eleanor Gagnon.

Funeral services were held from the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly followed by a funeral Mass celebrated in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Beverly.

Mary L. Ziolkowski, Substitute teacher
October 19, 2000

Mary Louise (Massung) Ziolkowski, 58, of Beverly died Oct. 15 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital of Boston after a brief illness. She was the wife of Alexander Paul Ziolkowski Jr., with whom she shared 35 years of marriage.

Born in Milford, Conn. on Nov. 15, 1941, Mrs. Ziolkowski was the daughter of Phyllis J. (Adams) Massung of Colchester, Conn. and the late Edward B. Massung. She was a graduate of Central Connecticut State University and had resided in Beverly since 1978.

Mrs. Ziolkowski was a substitute teacher in the Beverly Public School system for 20 years and had previously worked in real estate. Her hobbies included antiques as well as enjoying traveling and spending time with her family, friends and her granddaughter.

In addition to her husband and her 98-year-old mother, Mrs. Ziolkowski is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Alexia and Matthew Pawlyk of Beverly; a son, Alexander P. Ziolkowski III of Franklin, Ind.; a granddaughter, Olivia A. Pawlyk of Beverly; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dolores and Douglas Cross of Groveland, Calif., Beverly and Raymond Manierre of Cromwell, Conn. and Carol and Alan Driscoll of Lebanon, Conn.; brother, Edward B. Massung of Salem, Conn.; many nieces and nephews and one special feline friend named "Domino."

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 20 in St. John the Evangelist Church, New Balch St., Beverly at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held today in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly from 6 to 9 p.m. Interment will be at the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Danvers.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice.
